3 Introduction: This QQI Level 4 certified course, delivered by Mohill Computer Training, enables participants to develop the knowledge, skills and competence in a broad range of information and communication technology which enable employment in a variety of information and communications technology sectors and/or to progress to further education and training. This practical computer applications course trains participants to use a wide range of commonly used computer applications. Participants become skilled in the use of industry standard office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. Successful course participants can achieve a QQI Level 4 Major Award in Information and Communication Technology Skills. The objectives of this programme are: To provide learning that is general in nature and flexible in structure so that the learner has the maximum opportunity to improve his/her communication, numerical, ICT and planning skills To facilitate the learner to explore new vocational areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths with a view to up-skilling, developing new skills and exploring concepts and subjects that may interest the learner in future programmes or employment To enhance the learner s confidence in his/her ability and to build on his/her skills to reach his/her full potential To facilitate the learner to develop his/her interpersonal, team working, learning to learn, time keeping and time management skills, as appropriate, so that the learner is enabled to take responsibility for his/her own learning and to support progression including future participation in education and employment To provide the learner with vocationally specific knowledge, skill and competence at this level, thus affording the learner the opportunity to progress to programmes leading to awards at level 5 To provide the learner with relevant knowledge, skill and competence in a broad range of skills which enable employment, under direct supervision, in a variety of sectors, or progression to further education or training Course Duration: Each module takes approximately 4 weeks. The course runs 4 days a week (Monday to Thursday). The course runs from 10.00am to 1.00pm. 3

Who is it for?: This course has been designed specifically for those wanting to acquire new/updated skills in computerbased office applications and design tools with the purpose of securing future employment or for continuation on to Level 5 courses. 7 Course Modules Information Technology Skills - 4N1125 The purpose of this module is Ttoprovide the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to operate a computer and become proficient in Information Technology skills. On module completion participants will be able to: Explain a range of information technology concepts and terminology to include computer, computer hardware, components, system and application, software, input devices, output devices, data storage devices, bytes, files, folder/directory, drives, memory LAN, WAN, and the Internet Describe the impact of information technology on personal life and working or community life Manage files, folders or directories, using a range of common file management features to include create, rename, delete, copy, move, locate and save to range of drives Use a data entry application to enter data using text, alpha, numeric and special characters to a minimum speed of 15 words per minute. Access a word processing package to open a file, enter and edit text by inserting and deleting characters, words, sentences and paragraphs Format text using a range of format tools to include joining and splitting, line spacing, indentation, justifying and alignment Enhance text using a range of enhancement tools to include bold, underline, italicize, font and font size Edit a block of text using a range of editing tools to include move, copy and delete Navigate specific internet sites through a browser with specific links identified Use a range of functions in a webmail application to create, reply, cc, bcc, and add attachments to Manage a personal account to include inbox, read/unread, deleted items, trash, drafts, and contacts/address book Produce an accurate hard copy of a word document by proof reading, and using spell check, save and print features Produce a hard copy of specific information located on the internet Word Processing 4N1123 This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to use word processing applications to supervised employment standard. On module completion participants will be able to: Outline typical word processing functions, to include document creation, saving and retrieving and enhance documents State the primary functions and processes involved in creating word documents 7
8 Carry out common word processing functions including creating, naming and locating files and folders Use with confidence a word processing application to create and modify text including inserting, copying, cutting, pasting, deleting, finding and replacing Produce a range of printed documents by selecting different printers, changing paper size and orientation and adjusting document margins Demonstrate character and paragraph formatting skills to include font type, size, style, colour, tabs, indents, line spacing, alignment buttons, bullets, numbering, symbols, and special characters Complete object insertion skills including creating a basic table and locating, and aligning and re-sizing graphic images Carry out a range of editing operations on a document containing proof reader/s marks using the spell checker, thesaurus and grammar tools Produce a range of word processing documents including letter, memo and form, to a mailable or publishable standard Spreadsheet Methods 4N1120 This programme module aims to ensure that the learner is equipped with the knowledge, skill and competence required to create, use and edit a spreadsheet application under supervision. On module completion participants will be able to: Outline typical spreadsheet functions including document creation State the primary functions and processes involved in creating a spreadsheet document Use the language associated with spreadsheet applications Use with confidence a spreadsheet application to enter and edit text, numbers and dates, and insert and delete columns and rows Use arithmetic operators to add, subtract, multiply and divide Use formulae and functions within a spreadsheet including sum, average, max, min and count Use a range of formatting commands including font size, font colour, background colours, bold, alignments, borders, numbers, decimals and dates Modify a spreadsheet document by adding repeating column or row titles, page numbers, date or text to headers and footers, and adjusting to fit on to one page 8
9 Produce a range of basic charts and graphs including pie, column, bar and line with titles and labels Desktop Publishing 4N1854 This programme module aims to expand on the learners basic desktop publishing skills to enable them to successfully navigate a desktop publishing programme to create a variety of publications. It also encourages the learner to develop their understanding and use of the tools and options available within the desktop publishing application. On module completion participants will be able to: Identify desktop publishing software applications Explain the difference between desktop publishing and graphic design including their uses Describe the processes involved in desktop publishing from brief to document publication Explain print design principles including page layout, typography, graphics or images, alignment, emphasis, balance, colour and space Create a range of single page unfolded documents specifying page size, page orientation, margins, columns and gutters Import text and graphic files placing them accurately on the page using grids and rulers Use basic typographic tools to specify fonts, sizes, styles, horizontal scaling and spacing between characters and lines Select image and type faces appropriate to medium, target audience and purpose using primary or secondary sources Set margins, indents, tabs, rules (lines), headers, footers and text alignment Enhance documents using lines, boxes (frames), titles, moving and sizing graphics, and controlling the white space around graphics and between frames and text Proof read and correct documents Construct with manipulation image and text using relevant conventions to include spacing Create a range of single page unfolded documents consisting of graphic and textual elements to specific requirements Explore the effectiveness of the layout of the documents. 9
10 Database Methods 4N1115 This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to create, implement and organise databases with confidence using a database application. On module completion participants will be able to: Outline the primary database concepts and database operations State the primary functions and processes of database design, implementation and organisation Use the language associated with database applications Use with confidence a database application to start, open, create, save and exit a new database including creating suitable directories or folders Maintain a database including storing and back-up of files Carry out a range of database editing and design tasks to include modifying a database structure, saving a database, recalling existing database, organising the database, designing a suitable data entry screen, creating a record structure, using a data entry screen to input and edit data, replacing field contents for a selected group and deleting selected groups of records Retrieve specific information from a database using a query Create a form including entering data, modifying, updating, opening, closing and deleting records Create a report including title and column headings, outputting to screen and printer, modifying, saving, closing and printing selected data. Produce a database including additions, corrections and improvements created by others Web Design 4N1122 This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to design and construct a basic website. On module completion participants will be able to: Describe the structure of a webpage Discuss the features of a good website Design a basic website to a maximum of two pages 10
11 Insert basic HTML tags Format text to include bold, italics, font size, font colour Format page layout to include centre, background colour and background Apply RGB colour system Create ordered and unordered lists Insert hyperlinks, and images or graphics Use a paper based system and a computer system to enter and retrieve data Save webpage as HTML file Preview webpage in internet browser Print finished website 11
