1 PRACTICAL SKILL EVALUATION SHEET CHAPTER 7 SCBA Competency PRACTICAL SKILL: Donning Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Skill Level: Firefighter I Objective: Don Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) 2008 Edition, NFPA , The student will Don an SCBA using the overcoat method while verbalizing the safety check as they are performed as prescribed in the Delmar Firefighter s Handbook Chapter 7 within 2 minutes. The face piece must be charged with air for the time to stop. Safety checks must be performed and verbalized throughout. Materials Needed: Instructions: Complete Set of Personal Protective Equipment (includes Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) with Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) Device) To maintain consistency please judge the skill demonstration closely and solely by the criteria set out in this form. Provide written feedback comments at the end of the form. Debrief the outcome with the Probationary Firefighter, letting them know what they did correctly and how they can improve. If any element is not performed correctly assign them a FAIL and sign the bottom of the evaluation form. If they perform all elements correctly and you are confident they can repeat this performance to the same level, assign them a PASS and sign the bottom of the evaluation sheet. Record each attempt to demonstrate this competency in the Firefighter s training diary. Once completed, the evaluation form is directed to the District Fire Chief and a copy goes to the Probationary Firefighter Students will: Don Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), within 2 minutes The student will use the overcoat method for donning the SCBA and must be on air for the time to stop. Safety checks must be performed/verbalized throughout. Note: For SCBA without integrated PASS device, the time will not stop until the accessory PASS device has been enabled. Safety: Required Time: Allow several feet of space between students to prevent injuries. Grasp harness with right hand and slide on to left shoulder, slides right arm into harness (right strap on right shoulder) 5. Fasten Waist strap and tighten, tighten shoulder straps, clip chest strap, tuck strap ends in 6. Don SCBA face piece and Flash hood, neck strap around neck ( hood over spider/hair net) 7. The student shall: carry an extension ladder to a point of service, as indicated by the evaluator. raise (for the purpose of rescue) the extension ladder. spot and secure the extension ladder for climbing. verbalize any/all ladder commands. ascend the extension ladder to the midpoint employ a leg lock. continue to the top of the ladder and descend to the ground. return the ladder to the pumper. Note: The student is not permitted to run at any time and must climb the ladder in a slow, safe, and controlled manner to avoid causing excessive bounce whilst climbing. Safety: Always have students use proper lifting techniques to prevent back injuries. Make sure the ladder is butted/heeled. References: Canadian Firefighter s Handbook, Chapter 14, pages

Based on the situation the student, wearing complete PPE (including SCBA), shall demonstrate the proper placement and operation of the equipment for positive pressure ventilation. Safety: Students should use proper lifting techniques to prevent back injuries. Air quality may need to be monitored if gasoline powered fans are used. 7 PRACTICAL SKILL SHEETS CHAPTER 15 PRACTICAL SKILL: Tying Knots and Hitches Skill Level: Firefighter I Objective: Tying Knots and Hitches 2008 Edition, NFPA While wearing gloves, the student shall tie the prescribed knot(s) to secure or hoist the assigned object. Materials Provided: Materials Needed: Instructions: Two (2) Lengths of Different Diameter Rope and One (1) Length of Webbing Firefighting Gloves To maintain consistency please judge the skill demonstration closely and solely by the criteria set out in this form. Prior to the evaluation, each object will be randomly assigned a number between one (1) and six (6) and recorded in a list. The student will choose two (2) numbers between one (1) and six (6). The objects corresponding to the chosen numbers shall be removed from the list. The student shall tie the four (4) remaining objects. As the student completes each knot(s) for each object, the instructor will identify which object is to be tied next. The evaluation is complete when all four (4) objects have been tied correctly. Six (6) required knots and hitches: Overhand Safety Knot Half Hitch Clove Hitch Figure-Eight Follow Through (with two (2) half hitches) Figure-Eight on a Bight Becket Bend (Sheet Bend) Safety: Gloves shall be worn when tying knots for safety. Materials Provided: Materials Needed: Instructions: Fire Department Pumper (equipped with large-diameter hose), Storz to 4-1/2" Female Threaded Swivel Adapter, Two (2) Storz Spanner Wrenches, One (1) Hydrant Wrench, and Operable Fire Hydrant Complete Set of Personal Protective Equipment and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) To maintain consistency please judge the skill demonstration closely and solely by the criteria set out in this form. The Engine is stationary, staged approximately 3 m past the hydrant, and the order to make the hydrant is given. The assessment of the student begins when he/she leaves the jump seat. The student shall make the hydrant connection by: deploying one (1) section of Large-Diameter Hose (LDH) from the fire department Engine to the fire hydrant and making both the hydrant connection and the Engine intake connection, The evaluation will be complete when the hydrant has been opened and the hose has been charged. Upon completion, the student must close the hydrant, disconnect and drain the hose, and load the hose. The student may employ the assistance of other students and the instructor during the cleanup phase of this evaluation. Safety: Ensure student safety by encouraging proper lifting techniques. Steps off the Engine (3 point contact) Fails to maintain 3 point contact 2. Assembles correct tools and places at the hydrant (hydrant wrench and spanners or hydrant bag) 3. Steps onto tailboard. Places the 125 mm hose under an arm, across their chest, and over their shoulder. 4. Advance to the hydrant, and pull an additional 3 m of hose to wrap around the hydrant. 5.
