3 Plenary Speakers Looking back to look forward: Four decades of child sexual abuse knowledge Jon R. Conte, PhD The wide-ranging impacts of adverse childhood experiences Robert Anda, MD, MS October 18, 8:30 am This lecture traces the development of the Child Sexual abuse field from its early beginning in the late 1970s (and before), talks about the intellectual and practice issues that were prominent, traces trends in professional and public response over the last two plus decades, identifies factors (pressures) inherent to professional practice which may not have well served children and their families, and argues for a return to basic values and perspectives that points toward a renewed development putting children first. On the frontlines of children s sexual health: Child sexual abuse treatment in the new decade Douglas Braun-Harvey, MFT, CGP, certified sex therapist October 19, 8:30 am Access to accurate, informed and relevant sexual health information for American children and teens is difficult to obtain. This plenary invites child sexual abuse treatment providers to expand their visions of prevention and treatment to include advocacy and empowerment of families to become a child s source of sexual health. October 19, 10:30 am The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study is a decade-long and ongoing study designed to examine the childhood origins of many of our nation s leading health and social problems. The key concept underlying the study is that stressful or traumatic childhood experiences such as abuse, neglect, witnessing domestic violence, or growing up with alcohol or other substance abuse, mental illness, parental discord, or crime in the home (which we term adverse childhood experiences or ACEs) are a common pathway to social, emotional, and cognitive impairments that lead to increased risk of unhealthy behaviors, risk of violence or re-victimization, disease, disability and premature mortality. We now know from breakthroughs in neurobiology that ACEs disrupt neurodevelopment and can have lasting effects on brain structure and function the biologic pathways that likely explain the strength of the findings from the ACE Study. 8 Post Conference Advanced Training Institutes (Choose one per day) INSTITUTES October 20, Wednesday Institutes Institute 41 Reconsidering trauma: Treatment advances, relational issues, and mindfulness in integrated trauma therapy John Briere, PhD This workshop presents new material that formally integrates Buddhist philosophy and empirically based mindfulness approaches with effective trauma treatment. Also included is new information on interview-based assessment, cross-cultural issues, psychosis, stress reduction training, clinician counter-activation, and the neurobiology and psychopharmacology of trauma. Institute 42 Intersecting traumas: Family violence and child sexual abuse Karen A. Duncan, MA, LSW, LMFT Multiple traumas and multiple offenders are more common to children and teens than once thought. This requires clinical practice to expand approaches in the identification, assessment and treatment of intersecting traumas, and that family reunification plans integrate the totality of traumatic experiences. This session focuses on the dynamics of sibling sexual abuse within the context of domestic violence, mutual partner violence and its impact on family relationships, maternal offenders of sexual abuse and reunification planning within the context of intersecting traumas. The workshop incorporates group interaction, video, and a case example with a focus on the process of assessing and establishing guidelines for family reunification. Institute 43 Adult offenders Empirically supported treatment components Anna Salter, PhD This institute will focus on which treatment components are supported by empirical evidence. New research suggests that a number of commonly used treatment components are not criminogenic, i.e., changing these treatment targets will not reduce recidivism. Deviant arousal control, antisocial attitudes, dysregulation, intimacy deficits, psychological problems, family problems, empathy, social skills, sexually abused as a child, denial and other commonly targeted treatment variables will be examined in the light of the evidence for and against their inclusion in treatment. In addition, evidence for and against the treatment efficacy of the major theoretical approaches to treatment-elapse prevention, the riskneeds model, and the good lives model will be examined. Essentially, the day will focus on what should and shouldn t be included in treatment based on empirical research. Institute 44 Complex issues of sibling sexual abuse and reunification Geraldine Crisci, MSW In this workshop the leader reviews the clinical and research literature and clinical features of sibling sexual abuse. Topics include: separation of victim and offender; joint interviews with victim and offender; and the roles of key service providers (police, protective services, probation, and mental health). The critical role of full family participation in the assessment and treatment process will be outlined. Case examples demonstrate a working model to address issues of safety, loyalty, engagement, and minimization. Reunification of the family will be addressed including best practice protocols, issues and problems. 8 Midwest Conference on Child Sexual Abuse October 2010

9 Post Conference Advanced Training Institutes (Choose one per day) October 21, Thursday Institutes Institute 45 Juvenile sex offender recidivism risk: Treatment factors vs. risk factors Michael F. Caldwell, PsyD This institute reviews the recent studies of juvenile sex offender recidivism comparing studies that look at treatment variables to studies that look at static risk factors. The seminar addresses whether treatment is effective at reducing recidivism, whether reliable specific risk factors can be used to identify future sexual recidivists, and which group of factors is superior at this time. The seminar helps answer the question: Are we better off controlling high-risk juvenile offenders or treating them? Institute 46 Implementing trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy Jennifer Wilgocki, MS, LCSW If you plan to attend this institute you are asked to complete the 10-hour Web-based TF-CBT training (tfcbt.musc. edu) before the institute. In addition to an overview of the components, this group spends time addressing advanced TF-CBT issues: the challenges of caregiver involvement, how to measure desensitization, maintaining fidelity to the model, tips for sustaining the practice, and case examples. In the afternoon you hear from clients who have received TF-CBT. Institute 47 Creative interventions for sexually abused and traumatized children Liana Lowenstein, MSW, RSW, CPT-S This dynamic institute familiarizes you with an innovative model for working with sexually abused and traumatized children. Structured assessment and treatment techniques are presented for use with children of all ages in both individual and group treatment. Although the focus is on sexual abuse, interventions can be adapted for use with a variety of other treatment populations. Institute 48 Understanding and treating the self-injurer: Once an obscure psychiatric symptom, now an alarming mainstream problem Wendy Lader, PhD In the past decade, self-injury has grown from an obscure psychiatric symptom to a mainstream problem. Clinicians, educators and medical and criminal justice professionals frequently feel unprepared to work with clients or students who engage in self-directed violence. It is important for these providers to better understand etiology, treatment protocols, and management and utilization of the counter-transference experience. This workshop challenges some of the participants concepts about selfinjurers, traditional treatment methods and counter-transference reactions. Therapeutic strategies and treatment modalities, including the Impulse Control Log, are presented. INSTITUTES Workshop descriptions located at: 9
