Introduction This document provides detailed instructions for using the Motion Computing Connection Manager (MotionCM) as provided with the Motion Computing J3400 Tablet PC. MotionCM will only work with the Qualcomm Gobi MDM-1000 Global Mobile Internet and GPS Solution. AN ACTIVE DATA ACCOUNT WITH A MOBILE BROADBAND CARRIER IS REQUIRED FOR MOBILE BROADBAND NETWORK ACCESS. The Gobi Mini Card and MotionCM provide the ability to wirelessly connect the J3400 Tablet PC with a variety of mobile broadband networks. The Gobi Mini Card can be configured by MotionCM with one of several profiles that enable it to function on various networks. These profiles can be loaded via an option in MotionCM, and then MotionCM may be used to start, stop, and monitor a data session through the Active mobile broadband network. The Gobi Mini Card also includes a GPS receiver that is independent of the mobile broadband network. The GPS receiver is capable of acquiring GPS satellites and determining the current location, altitude, heading and horizontal velocity of the J3400. A network connection or SIM card is not required for the GPS receiver to function. MotionCM has a simple user interface for starting and stopping a GPS session. Once started, the Gobi Mini Card will deliver standard NMEA location data through a virtual com port that can be used by any number of mapping and navigation programs, as well as by the Motion Computing QuickNav application. Making a Data Connection These instructions detail how to make a data connection on a mobile broadband network when the appropriate network information is loaded for that network. 5 Install the SIM (UMTS networks only) 1. Turn off the tablet. 2. Remove the battery or battery bay cartridge (non-functioning) from the right battery bay. a. Slide the battery release switch until the battery is partially ejected, and then pull the battery out of the battery bay. 3. Lift the corner of the plastic film covering the SIM slot and slide the SIM into the slot, with the metal contacts facing downward and the notched corner positioned as shown n the illustration. 4. Replace the battery or battery bay cartridge by placing the two tabs of the battery or battery bay cartridge into the two slots in the battery bay, and then press the other end of the battery into the battery bay until you hear a click or feel the battery lock into place. 5. Turn on the tablet. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 5
Launch MotionCM 1. Start All Programs Motion Connection Manager MotionCM a. This will launch the application and create a System Tray icon 2. Select the Networks tab in the left column. You should see a list of default profiles (sorted by country), and the selected Profile Details. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 6
3. If your desired profile is not provided by default, use the New button and the Profile Details section to create your desired profile. Entering a Name, selecting your Network from the drop-down list, and then selecting Save to add your new profile to the profile list. a. 8 4. Select your desired profile from the profile list, and then click the Apply button near the top of the application Window. MotionCM will load the selected profile information into the Gobi Mini Card and reset the device. The process should take about 30 seconds. Note: For first time use, a Network Profile must be applied. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 8
5. Select the Connect tab in the left column. For a UMTS Technology Carrier, select the Connect button to connect to the broadband network. For a CDMA Technology Carrier, see CDMA Carrier Activation below. 6. CDMA Carrier Activation CDMA carriers require that you activate your device on their network before you can connect to the network. a. Selecting the Activate button and then selecting OK will begin the activation process. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 9
b. An activation status window will be presented and will be automatically updated as the activation process proceeds. When complete, select the OK button. c. Select the Connect button to connect to the broadband network. Selecting the Update button will repeat the activation process, updating the PRL (Preferred Roaming List) to the latest. 7. Select optional program and connection controls as desired. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 10
8. If a PIN (Personal Identification Number) has been enabled for an installed SIM card, you will be prompted to enter the PIN before the connection can be made. The PIN must be numeric and must be four to eight characters in length. Once the PIN has been verified, the connection attempt will proceed. The SIM PIN Status entry on the Connect page will show the current status of the PIN. Once the PIN has been verified, it will remain verified until the tablet is turned off or placed in hibernate, standby or sleep modes. You are allowed a total of three attempts to enter the PIN. If you enter an incorrect PIN, the SIM PIN Retries Remaining entry will be decremented. After three incorrect entries, the SIM will become blocked and unusable, and it will be necessary to remove the SIM from the tablet to unblock it. Contact your carrier for assistance in unblocking your SIM should this occur. For more information on how to manage your SIM PIN, including enabling or disabling the PIN and changing the PIN code, see the Managing Your SIM PIN section below. 12 9. Once a connection is established, the Connect button will change to Disconnect. (For North America a warning message will be displayed requesting the user immediately disconnect any other active wireless LAN connections). Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 12
10. To minimize the application to the System Tray, click on the Close X in the upper right hand corner. For quick status, hover the cursor/pointer over the System Tray icon. This will display the selected Profile and connection status, the Receive Signal Strength (RSSI), and the GPS status. Click on the System Tray icon to display program, connection, and GPS controls available with the program minimized. 11. To end the WWAN data session, click the Disconnect button. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 13
12. To exit the program, Click on the System Tray icon and select Exit. If the system is connected to the network when Exit is selected, you will be prompted to terminate the active connection and close MotionCM. Selecting Cancel will leave the connection active and will not exit MotionCM. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 14
SMS (Short Message Service) MotionCM provides the ability to receive and view SMS messages (only available on UMTS technology carriers). If MotionCM is running, when a message is received, an audible tone will sound and the message will be displayed whenever MotionCM is open. Clicking the SMS button on the MotionCM Connect page will display the last received SMS message, and provide the ability to scroll through and/or delete received messages. 16 Managing Your SIM PIN If your broadband carrier uses a SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) card, it will come with a pre-programmed PIN (Personal Identification Number). The SIM PIN acts as a security lock for your PIN and keeps unauthorized users from using your SIM or gaining access to any information stored on the SIM. By default, most carriers supply the SIM card to you with the PIN disabled. You must contact your carrier to determine the default PIN that has been assigned to your SIM card. See Section 5 under Making a Data Connection for instructions on entering your PIN to make a data connection. If your PIN is enabled, you will be prompted to enter the PIN the first time you attempt to make a data connection or manage the PIN settings after the tablet has been powered on. If your PIN is not enabled, you will not be prompted for the PIN. To enable or disable your PIN, click the Manage PIN button on the MotionCM Connect page. If your SIM PIN has not been verified, you will first be prompted to enter your PIN before proceeding. Once your PIN has been verified, you will see this dialog: If your PIN has already been enabled, the Enable PIN check box will be checked. If your PIN has not been enabled and you would like to enable it, check the Enable PIN check box and enter your PIN in the Enter PIN text field. Conversely, if your PIN is already enabled and you would like to disable it, uncheck the Enable PIN checkbox and enter your PIN. Click OK to complete the change and you should see a confirmation message. If you would like to change your PIN, click the Manage PIN button on the MotionCM Connect page. If your SIM PIN has not been verified, you will first be prompted to enter your PIN before proceeding. Once that your PIN has been verified, you will see the same dialog as shown above: Check the Change PIN checkbox to enable the Change PIN feature. Then enter your current PIN in the Enter Pin text field and your new PIN in both the New PIN and Verify new PIN text fields. Your PIN must be numeric and must be four to eight characters in length. Click OK to complete the operation. You should see a verification message. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 16
Using GPS The GPS receiver in the Gobi Mini Card is independent of the WWAN functionality. A data connection is not required to use GPS. 1. Insure that the J3400 Tablet PC is outdoors in an open area. Any buildings, overhead power lines or cables, or other overhead structures will inhibit GPS reception. 2. Start MotionCM. 3. Select the GPS tab in the left column, and then click the Start GPS button. The Start GPS button will change to Stop GPS and the tablet will begin to acquire satellites Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 17
4. Initial satellite acquisition can take up to 30 minutes while the satellite almanac is downloaded for the first time. Subsequent acquisitions should not take as long. 5. Select optional program and GPS controls as desired. Copyright 2009 Motion Computing, Inc. All rights reserved. Page 18
6. Use Motion Computing QuickNav or any other GPS-capable navigation software to access the GPS data from the virtual com port presented by the Gobi Mini Card drivers. Use the Search feature of these applications to determine the com port name, or open Device Manager from Control Panel, expand the Ports section and identify the NMEA port entry. The associated com port name (i.e. COM5) can be entered into the GPS configuration of the navigation software. 7. When not in use, the GPS reception can be stopped by clicking the Stop GPS button.
