2 August 19, 2014 Revised September 12, 2014 TO: Oxford Historic Preservation Commission REF: Graduate Oxford Hotel 400 North Lamar Oxford, MS This submission is in response to outstanding item for the Graduate Oxford Hotel as follows: Item #1 - Guest Room Terraces: Addition of 4th floor guest room terraces, 4 total, fully covered with a sloped slate roof, reference Typical Guest Room Balcony Elevation and Guest Room Balcony Rendering, attached. These terraces enhance the historic residential character of the new building while providing a design element common to the historic buildings on the square. The terraces will have steel railings to complement the previously approved railing design and black color. The sloped slate roof will also match the previously approved roof. Item #2 - Parking Lot Fencing along Jefferson Avenue: We propose to remove the wood portion of the existing fencing along Jefferson and replace with a 4'- O" height steel fence to complement the steel railing design being used throughout the project that was previously approved by the Historic Preservation Commission. This improvement to the existing fence will create design continuity with the entire project as well as allow public visual access to the parking lot area, therefore, improving site security. Please reference attached photograph of existing fence and new proposed fence design. Item #3 - Gas Lanterns: Reference Gas Lantern Selection information and photo sheets, attached. The lantern is 36" in height with a hand rubbed antique black finish. The "Governor Scroll" fixture is our preferred choice with an option of the "London Street" fixture for discussion. 11 Comments: Item #1: Guest Room Terraces Proposed fully covered terraces are in keeping with the original concept of residential roof bays to tie in with surrounding residential district. Terrace details include previously approved slate roof and railing style approved for ground-level and upper-level corner terraces. Newly added support post elements reference existing historic double gallery storefronts in surrounding district within proposed building vocabulary. Item #2: Parking Lot Fence (Jefferson Avenue) Proposed fence infill modifications appear in keeping with the surrounding district and proposed building vocabulary. Offset between infill panels and existing masonry pier height is significant; extend infill panel height, if permitted by Zoning Ordinance. Consider replacement of wood fence infill along North 14 th Street with similar metal infill configuration for a more contiguous look. Existing setback from curb appears to allow dense landscape for screening. Item #3: Gas Lanterns Fixtures cannot be evaluated or approved out of context; provide corner building elevation with proposed fixtures indicated to scale.
