2 PALS Social Skills Program PALS SOCIAL SKILLS PROGRAM A social skills teaching resource for ages 3 to 6 years An Australian, research-based social skills program designed by clinical psychologists and early childhood educators for use in day care centres, preschools, kindergarten classrooms and other early childhood centres. PALS Social Skills Program (3rd edition) Authors: Cooper, Pearson, Goodfellow, Paske and Muhlheim ISBN: P ALS Social Skills Program teaches children from 3 to 6 years of age about greeting others, listening, sharing, taking turns, dealing with feelings of fear, sadness and anger, and solving problems. Learning social skills like these in early childhood is just as important as learning numeracy and literacy. The early childhood and early school years are when children start to make friends, learn to cooperate with others and begin to solve social problems. Like all skills, some children develop social skills more easily than others. Social skills are of the utmost importance for children s future development. PALS Social Skills Program teaches children constructive ways to solve problems that arise in social situations. This is done through stories acted out by puppets, video scenarios, probe questions, role-play activities and songs. Teachers are provided with detailed information on how to implement the program and run the sessions, and parent information sheets for each session help to support the program at home. It is estimated that over 50,000 children have now been through the PALS Social Skills Program in Australia and the United Kingdom. Clinical evaluations from the NSW Department of Health and UK early childhood psychologists indicate that the PALS Social Skills Program significantly reduces problem behaviour and increases social skills. PALS Social Skills Program includes: ten sessions covering all the fundamental social skills; step-by-step guide for running the program; detailed explanations of how to develop each session; 3 large, plush puppets with mouth movement to act out stories; suggested scripts for each session to help the educator cover all the concepts; a CD with songs for specific sessions; song lyrics and relaxation script for young children; a DVD with social scenarios for specific sessions (VHS video available upon request); suggested resources and activities for supporting each social skill; parent information sheets on ways to continue PALS Social Skills Program at home; staff information sheets on ways to continue the program at the centre or school; a heavy-duty satchel with shoulder strap to hold program kit contents; a A3 size, colour poster. For more information, visit the PALS Social Skills Program web site:

Music Magic Author: Lucy Bainger ISBN: Music Magic is a valuable resource for educators and students, parents and carers in providing fun and enriching musical experiences for young children. Sharing music with children is a wonderful, joyful experience for everyone involved and yet it can present challenges for the educator. With Music Magic, educators, including those with very little musical experience, are provided with practical support and detailed instructions for sharing music confidently and effectively with young children. Music Magic focuses on the fundamental musical concepts, including stopping and starting, sound texture, beat, tempo, dynamics, pitch and rhythm. The educator and the children explore the concepts together and these are brought alive through musical play involving games, singing, movement, playing and improvising on instruments, and conducting. The songs and games encourage active listening and participation for groups and for the individual child. Music Magic is a flexible resource which can be used in a variety of ways. It is an essential aid to an emergent curriculum. Music Magic gives a helping hand to every educator who would like to develop and extend his or her own musical expertise and involve children in musical play that is both fun and educational. Music Magic includes: eight chapters covering all the fundamental musical concepts; over 3o songs and games; a CD with all the songs for each chapter; detailed explanations of ways to share the songs and games with children; educator tutorials on specific focus areas, included on the CD; reference notes providing practical assistance on important aspects of early childhood music; s for the educator with summaries of the songs and games for each music session, and the song lyrics; a lanyard and holder for the s to enable the educator to work hands-free; take-home notes for parents on ways to continue Music Magic at home; suggestions for music making with children in groups and individually; further explorations for developing each concept in other key learning areas; recommendations for music recordings, web sites and further reading.
