3 Introduction to Hands-On Social Studies Program Introduction The Hands-On Social Studies program focuses on developing students knowledge, skills, and attitudes through active inquiry, problem solving, and decision making. Throughout all activities, students are encouraged to explore, investigate, and ask questions in order to heighten their own curiosity about, and understanding of, the world around them. What Is Social Studies? Social studies is an interdisciplinary study that draws from such traditional disciplines as history, geography, political studies, and economics. It involves the examination of communities, both locally and globally. In essence, social studies helps students learn about the world around them. Social studies also involves the development of concepts as well as skills of inquiry and communication. Students apply these skills to develop an understanding of their world and to enable them to make decisions and solve problems in everyday life. The Goals of Social Studies The Hands-On Social Studies program has been designed to focus on the goals of the Social Studies Curriculum as identified by the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training (2004). These goals are: 1. To understand the basic concepts of social studies, history, and geography. 2. To develop the skills, strategies, and habits of mind required for effective inquiry and communication, and for the application of the basic concepts of social studies, history, and geography to a variety of learning tasks. 3. To relate the knowledge acquired through social studies and the study of history and geography to the world outside the classroom. 1

4 5 What Is an Import? What Is an Export? Background Information for Teachers Imports: Goods and services that a country buys from another country Exports: Goods and services that a country sells to another country Note: To help students distinguish between the two terms, introduce the following cues: port means to carry ex-port (as in exit, or going out) im-port (think of in) Materials variety of foods from Canada and other countries (e.g., imports: bananas, chocolate, coffee, pineapple, coconut; exports: apples, corn, wheat, potatoes, canola oil) chart paper markers Activity Begin by reading the following scenario to the students: Matthew is so excited. He just purchased a new pack of trading cards. When he opens the pack he realizes he already has most of the cards that are in the new package. He wonders what he should do with the duplicate cards. Ask the students: What are some things he could do with the cards? (sell the duplicate cards, trade cards for ones he wants, keep the cards and wait for their value to rise) Explain to the students that Matthew s trading cards are like the many natural and manufactured goods that countries possess. When a country has goods or services that another country would like (just like extra trading cards), the country exports the goods or services to the country in need. When a country needs goods or services (just like rare or special trading cards), the country imports the goods or services. Divide the class into working groups. Give each group a piece of chart paper and a marker. Explain that each group is to come up with definitions for the terms import and export. Once the students in the groups have agreed on a definition for each, they are to record it on their chart paper. When all groups have completed their definitions, display the pieces of chart paper, and have one student from each group read the definitions to the class. Once all the definitions have been read, discuss them. Ask: How are these definitions the same? How are they different? What definition is easiest to understand? Why? Have the students agree on one definition for import and one definition for export. Post these definitions in a visible spot in the classroom. Note: Have students include the terms import and export and their definitions in their unit glossary. Focus on Canadian imports and exports. Ask: What things do you think Canada imports? What would we need from other countries? (e.g., foods not grown here, natural resources not found here, products not made here) What things do you think Canada exports? What do we have an abundance of? (e.g., natural resources such as lumber and oil, agricultural products such as wheat) Now display the variety of foods from Canada and other countries. Have the students examine and discuss the items, then have them distinguish between those produced in Canada and those products produced in other countries. Sort the food accordingly. Unit 2 Canada s Links to the World 199

5 5 Activity Sheet Directions to students: Complete the chart. In the left-hand column, record the reasons why a country would import goods or services. In the right-hand column, record the reasons why a country would export goods or services. At the bottom of the activity sheet, record five products that you think Canada imports and five products that you think Canada exports (2.5.1). Extensions Discuss reasons why it is a good idea to buy Canadian-made products. Have the students design posters that encourage Canadian spending on Canadian products. Challenge students to research and collect names of Canadian companies (e.g., Canadian Tire, Lee Valley, The Bay). Create a chart for students to record these names. Assessment Suggestions As students work on their definitions, observe their ability to work productively in a group. Use the cooperative skills teacher assessment sheet on page 18 to record results. Have the students complete a cooperative skills self-assessment sheet on page 20 to reflect on their ability to work together. 200 Hands-On Social Studies Grade 6
