2 Maybe you already like math. Maybe you already do well in math. Maybe you would like to do better in math! Maybe you are already using math in your everyday life and didn t even know it. The AMS for Students web page (ams.org/students) and this brochure offer selected resources to open your mind and bring you new experiences as you progress in your studies. Visit your library, talk with the mathematics department faculty, or contact the AMS and other organizations to find out more about publications, internships, careers, funding, free help and more. Explore Math Programs One of the best ways to experience math research is to take part in a program outside your school. Work alone or in teams alongside great mentors, explore math problems, and make new friends with people who also love math. There are summer math camps and math circles for high school students, as well as Research Experiences for Undergraduates all over the U.S., and semester programs around the world. AMS for Students also links to video collections of lectures, instruction and entire courses.

3 See Where Math is Used Discover the world of mathematics and its many applications in sports, climatology, medicine, human rights, politics, and even solving a mystery about a Beatles song! There are over 110 topics in science, nature, technology, and human culture in the Mathematical Moments program. All are available as free downloadable posters, most have been translated into other languages, and many feature podcast interviews with researchers who use math to help design cars for NASCAR, predict severe storm surges, study sea ice, identify fake photos, schedule sports competitions, explore space, and create animation techniques for movies. AMS for Students also links to free posters, Mathematical Awareness Month, and more. Get Free Math Help The AMS has assembled a selective list of some of the best sources to get help on math at all levels. Explore, refresh your memory with a problem of the week, and see video explanations.

4 Enter Competitions & Earn Awards Photo: Sandy Huffaker Enter competitions and science fairs, and submit essays and papers to earn awards. The AMS s Who Wants to Be a Mathematician is a contest of skill and excitement for qualifying high school students. Contestants compete for cash and prizes by answering multiple-choice precalculus questions. The regional Photo: Sandy Huffaker contests are usually held on a college or university campus, and the national contest is at the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings each January. If you are a student of any age, come to cheer the contestants on and see how well you can do as you play along in the audience! 5 Enjoy Math Outside the Classroom! Robert J. Lang Nathan Shields ( See fantastic origami, sculptures and digital math art, play math games, do a puzzle, visit a museum with hands-on math activities, find famous people who were math majors, order free posters, read some clever math poetry, and check out video clips of movies that include math. Find out about Graduate School Explore graduate programs in the mathematical sciences online--search and sort by specialties, requirements, masters or PhD degree, size, and location (in the U.S. and Canada). Talk in person with representatives from the programs during the Grad School Fair at the Joint Mathematics Meetings.

6 Publish or Present Research Photos: IML Photography/Society for Science & the Public Submit a paper to a math journal or present a poster of your work at a meeting. Start by asking a teacher or mentor for advice, and read the guidelines and requirements of the journal or meeting organizer. It s a valuable experience to learn to communicate your research and enthusiasm to fellow students, mathematical scientists, and judges. If you have successfully described your research to a friend or a stranger, congratulations!
