5 Wedding Invitation Envelope Etiquette To a Married Couple Spell out the husband s (and if desired, the wife s) first name. If you decide to include the husband's middle name, it should be spelled out, not abbreviated with an initial. Follow the same rules for same sex couples. Mr. Christopher and Mrs. Kawania Wooten Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Wooten Mr. and Mrs. Wooten Christopher and Kawania To a Married Couple with Different Last Names List the person closest to you first. In the case of a wife who has chosen to hyphenate her last name, then she should be addressed using Ms. (Mrs. is also acceptable) + her first name + maiden name + married name: Mr. Christopher Wooten and Ms. Kawania Howerton-Wooten. Follow the same rules for same sex couples. Mr. Christopher Wooten and Ms. Kawania Howerton Mr. Wooten and Ms. Howerton Christopher and Kawania To an Unmarried Couple Living Together The word "and" was once used to represent a marriage, a union. This rule no longer applies. In the case of a couple that lives together, address the male first, followed by the female. For the single female guest, it s proper etiquette to use Ms. if she is 18 years old or older. If she is younger than 18, use Miss instead. Follow the same rules for same sex couples. 6 Wedding Invitation Envelope Etiquette To a Married Woman with a Distinguished Title If her husband does not have a distinguished title, address invitations to the wife first. Her name comes first because her professional title "outranks" his social title. These rules also apply if the woman uses her maiden name professionally and socially. The return address should be printed on the envelope flap (not the front of the envelope). Street Address House numbers smaller than 10 should be spelled out. Instead of writing P.O. Box write Post Office Box Instead of writing Apt. write Apartment Instead of writing NW or SE, write Northwest or Southeast City and States The names of city and states should be spelled out. Instead of writing Bowie, MD, write Bowie, Maryland Instead of writing Washington, DC, write Washington, District of Columbia Additional Information Outer and Inner Envelope Details The Outer Envelope is 100% necessary. This is the envelope that includes all of the necessary address information need by the US Postal Service for delivery. If you use two envelopes in your wedding invitation suite, the outer envelope protects the inner envelope from postal machines, handling and messy hands. Inner envelopes ensure that wedding guests receive an invitation in pristine order. This formal invitation custom can be omitted if your budget doesn t allow for it. If you do include an inner envelope in your wedding invitation suite, it should have the names of all of the invited guests in the household (including children) printed on it. Invitation No No s Mailing Labels. Don t use mailing labels when addressing invitation envelopes. Address the envelopes by hand, hire a calligrapher or have the stationery designer print the addresses directly on the envelope. Gift Requests. Listing the registry information or requesting monetary gifts on your wedding invitation is considered to be in poor taste. (Many say that it basically says that the wedding gifts are more important than your wedding guests presence.) Adults Only. You may list that your wedding is for Adults Only on your wedding app or wedding web site, but it is consider inappropriate to note it on the wedding invitation.
