4 What is hyaluronic acid? Chemically seen, hyaluronic acid is a chain of sugar molecules. Under the microscope it looks like lots of small threads knotted together to form a long chain, which is then loosely tangled in upon itself. A single molecule in this chain can bind up to 6,000 times its own weight in water. Nowadays, hyaluronic acid is produced synthetically from enzymes.
