5 Integrated Children s Services (ICS) Business Unit Over 330 colleagues 6 School Nursing Teams Children s Services Professional Forum x 3 each year Close working with colleagues in Local Authorities, CCGs and NHS(England) Constantly raising profile within Education, both LA and individual Schools All colleagues are leaders; devolved responsibility as far as possible Really great performance levels for mandatory training, supervision and we have very low staff turnover rates. Support 2 new Queen s Nurses (SNTL), 1 new Fellow of the ihv, and other professional development Each of our services is financially viable.

7 OUR AIM The School Nursing Service aims to promote and support the health and well-being of all school age children, both in schools and in the wider community.
8 The School Nursing Team Your School Nursing Team is made up of registered nurses some with a specialist qualification in School Nursing, a School Nurse Team Leader and School Nurse Assistants. This team works alongside children and families, school staff and other professionals. Every School in Calderdale has a School Health Team Central and North Halifax Carole Hoyle Cheryl Hutchinson Denise Brason - Sue Henderson - Lisa Dobson Upper Valley Judith Foster -Monika Rayner -Joanna Binns Lower Valley Julie Haw Lucy Charlesworth -Sharon Mensah - Jo Ambler
9 The Focus of the New Specification The focus of the new service is on supporting and improving the health outcomes of students with long term medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and students at risk of having an anaphylactic event. Ultimately supporting schools to implement Supporting pupils at school with medical conditions (DOH, April 2014) Support education to access appropriate study to manage the administration of medicines in schools.
10 Medical registers in schools. This will be achieved through- Training / information giving to parents, students and school staff- delivered in schools, community venues on training days and after school. Care plans for all- developed in partnership with pupil, parents, school and partners to include preventative and emergency actions review annually. Spare Asthma inhalers in school- School nurses will assist schools and colleges to obtain emergency asthma inhalers. Follow up of attendances at Accident and Emergency where the presenting condition has been an onset or exacerbation a long term medical condition (asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, anaphylaxis).
11 Other services offered Safeguarding- Taking the health lead when the student has an unmet health need which can be most appropriately addressed by the school nursing service. Attending case conferences, core groups, completing a holistic health needs assessment, child in need meetings and single assessments (CAF s). Targeting students in the most vulnerable groups eg, LAC, NEET, Home schooled, Private fostered, poor attendance. Follow up Accident and Emergency attendances regarding domestic violence incidence, self harm or intoxication/ poisoning, deliberate injuries. Escalate and refer into social care as appropriate.
12 First Aid- St John s ambulance to train 500 Students over 3 years. Each high school will be offered a place course. Primary schools will be offered a number of places dependent on school size. Looked after children- Annual health review Assessment in reception year- This will be achieved through a review of current health records and also a teacher questionnaire with a needs lead focus.
13 Health Promotion Enable other services to access school settings to provide Health promotion- Sexual health, drug and alcohol and mental health.
14 Access to the school nursing team A duty school nurse is available between 2 and 5pm each day, contacted via the administration hub Each school has a school nursing team cluster assigned who are contactable via the admin hub number above.
15 The preferred method of referral is using the school nurse referral form. Either post, or fax to the details on the bottom of the form.
16 Following receipt of a referral for a school nurse intervention and communication with the referrer and/or parents a holistic Calderdale Universal Needs Assessment may be undertaken with the student. The assessment incorporates the five outcome from Every child matters. Be healthy Stay safe Making a positive contribution Achieve economic well being Enjoy and Achieve
17 Following assessment a brief intervention may be offered Physical and emotional wellbeing -Continence -Behaviour -Healthy eating -Sleep Following a brief intervention if needs remain referral to a specialist service will be offered.
