Cumulative UK investment in has now topped the 2 billion mark and is set to expand further. As the economy of develops and modernises I hope that the two-way flow of trade and investment increases. Sectors of particular relevance to the i-british commercial partnership include education, life science, power, energy, water & environment, infrastructure and ICT. I believe that the already impressive range of activities in these areas will increase in breadth and depth in the years ahead. UK Trade & Investment is the British Government organisation that supports UK companies trading internationally, and overseas enterprises seeking to interact with Britain s own vibrant economy. 4 6 UK Trade & Investment 7 Power & Energy The UK s power and energy sector can offer excellence to i companies in the supply of equipment, design engineering, research and development, training, education, professional and financial services. In 2012, imported 17 million worth of UK power generating machinery and equipment. Well known UK companies such as Rolls Royce and Aggreko have been supplying the i market for many years. The UK is the global leader in offshore wind power, with more capacity installed than the rest of the world put together. Over 73% of all new offshore wind capacity in Europe in 2012 was installed in the UK. The UK s solar power sector is estimated by the National Solar Centre to be worth around 1.5 billion annually, and predicting an installed capacity of 8 22GW by 2020.

5 8 UK Trade & Investment 9 Education and Skills The UK has a global reputation for excellence in the field of education and skills, and is a world leader in providing educational resources from pre-school to university and beyond. The UK continues to be a leading innovator in distance and e-learning material and programmes. The quality of universities in the UK is recognised throughout the world, demonstrated by the number of universities in the top ten of independent global rankings. UK universities attract a 10% share of the international student market, second only to the United States. The UK is becoming increasing popular for i students. Every year around i students visit the UK Education Fair in, and around 3000 student visas are awarded every year for study in the UK. The UK s professional qualifications are recognised internationally and are in huge demand by those seeking to improve their career prospects. For example the City of Glasgow College has recently entered into a partnership with Western Maritime Academy (WMA) to deliver the 1st year of HND Engineering Training Scheme in. Professional bodies such as the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) are becoming increasingly active in. Each year around 2000 students enrol for Edexcell BTech qualifications through 16 approved centres in. The number of O and A level students who sit for the Edexcell exam totals around 17,000 per year.

6 10 UK Trade & Investment 11 Infrastructure The UK has an extensive and sophisticated infrastructure sector that has been developed over hundreds of years. The UK is exporting its expertise in infrastructure development around the world, with significant projects in. The Bhairab Bridge, also known as the -UK Friendship Bridge, was built under the supervision of UK Company Halcrow. The Jamuna Bridge connecting Bhuapur and Sirajganj, constructed in 1998, was built under the supervision of UK Company High Point Rendel. It is currently the 6th longest bridge in South Asia and at the time of construction was the 11th longest bridge in the world. UK Company Mott Macdonald has been appointed by the i Government to provide design and supervision services for rural infrastructure improvement in the northwest and southwest. It is also providing consultancy services aimed at improving flood defences and drainage of coastal areas in under the Health and Population Sector Program.

7 12 UK Trade & Investment 13 Ports & Logistics The UK ports industry is able to offer in-depth experience and understanding of transferring ownership from the public to the private sector. The UK ports industry is now exporting its specific skills worldwide in all areas of port development including port management, design consultancy services, training, equipment supply, legal/finance services, logistics and the development of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Terminals at Ports. UK companies are already supplying specialised port machineries and equipment to Chittagong and Mongla Sea Ports.

8 14 UK Trade & Investment 15 Environment & Water Environment and water companies from the UK have an international reputation for world-leading capabilities and outstanding solutions and services. Known for their world class science, research and engineering capability, the UK s environment and water industry is helping international markets solve complex environmental challenges and reach their carbon reduction targets. The UK water industry comprises over 500 companies, employs around 80,000 people and generates over 3 billion of overseas business each year. UK company Dryden Aqua is providing clean safe drinking water in West Bengal. It is also providing drinking water systems in, pre-treatment systems for pharmaceutical companies to remove Pseudomonas bacteria and waste water treatment for the textile industry as well. Thames Water UK is running a project Thames 4 delivering safe water and sanitation to four small towns in. After completion of this project 55,000 people will have access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

9 16 UK Trade & Investment 17 Life Sciences The UK has one of the strongest and most productive life sciences industries in the world, contributing to patient well-being as well as supporting growth. i companies import specialised medicine and medical equipment from the UK to service its healthcare and medical industry sector, both locally and for export. One sixth of the most popular prescription medicines were developed in the UK. 17 of the 20 biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world have research and development, manufacturing and sales sites across the UK. The UK is the home to GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca, respectively the world s fifth and sixth-largest pharmaceutical companies measured by 2009 market share. GSK has been manufacturing in since Today i companies such as Square Pharmaceuticals, SKF, Renata and others have commenced exporting to the European market with MHRA approval.

10 18 UK Trade & Investment 19 ICT The UK is Europe s leading market for software and IT services with a market value of 58 billion per year. UK is home to over 100,000 specialist software companies. The UK has been ranked as the lowest risk destination in Europe, and the second lowest in the world for businesses to locate their data centres. The UK has renowned strength in software development across a wide range of application areas including automotive, financial services, retail and logistics. The UK has a long history of innovation in electronics and IT hardware, with world-leading businesses in fields such as processor core technology, mixed signal devices, sensors and lighting with a reputation as a global centre for digital technologies. UK ICT companies such as Qubee and Metafour are doing business successfully in. In 2013, Metafour Asia has won the Best Outsourcing Organisation Award for software development from the Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) in 2013.
