T-202 Richard Penny Biomechanical Technology for Treating Sox Scrubber Water
Shipboard Scrubber Systems Exhaust Gas Cleaning (EGC) Systems or Scrubbers are an approved alternative to low sulfur fuel Scrubbers remove SOx and other contaminants from the engine exhaust emissions with an alkali waterstream Existing water treatment technologies are being introduced to remove oils and PAH s to regulatory limits
IMO Regulations MEPC.184(59) Turbidity < 25 NTU/FNU differential from inlet seawater PAH < 50 ppb differential from inlet sea water (normalized to 45 t/mwh) Nitrate/Nitrite < 60 ppm (normalized) ph > 6.5 or 2 ph units differential underway Temperature (recorded) % Sulfur allowed in fuel decreasing in stepped approach starting 2009 through 2021
Technology Need SOx Scrubbers do not address hydrocarbons and PM in scrubber water effluent Shipping companies have been hit with fines up to $36 million for illegal discharge of oily wastewater (bilgewater) Therefore, companies have significant liability exposure if they don t address the hydrocarbons from their scrubber effluent
Technology Solution Technology developed with National Science Foundation (NSF) grant The Biomechanical system combines physical and biological processes to address PAH and PM. Combined technologies to treat Open, Closed, and Hybrid systems. Add-on system for scrubber manufacturers
NSF Lab Results Table 1: Effluent diesel/pah concentrations and removal rates in scrubber water treatment system. Reactor System 0% Salt 5% Salt 5% + Bleach (Poison Ctrl) 10% Salt 15% Salt Total PAH (ppb) PAH % Removal 99.8% 99.7% 99.5% 99.4% 99.6% Total Diesel (ppm) Diesel % Removal 97.5% 99.5% 84.3% 96.8% 98.5% 6
Closed-Loop Treatment Biofilter Prototype Shown Tested at the Port of Long Beach with shipboard scrubber system 99% PAH reduction (all samples <50 ppb) Turbidity reduced 73% (all samples <25 NTU)

Process Flow Stage 1 Free Phase Oil Removal Free Phase Oil (to sludge tank) Scrubber Water To Bioreactor To Bioreactor Particulate Matter to sludge tank Scrubber effluent is pumped into Coalescer Separator Coalescing matrix separates freephase oil from water Initial PM separation Oil and Particulate Matter (PM) are discharged into sludge tank Emulsified oil/water flows into Bioreactor
Process Flow Stage 2 PM Removal Scrubber water enters the hydrocyclone inlet and swirls downward in the conical separation chamber at high velocity. Solids are thrown against the walls, forced to the bottom, and discharged through the apex. As the liquid approaches the bottom, it is unable to exit the small nozzle, so it reverses direction, forms an inner vortex and seeks the clean liquid overflow. Overflow (liquid + ultra-fines) Vortex Finder Feed Inlet Apex
Process Flow Stage 3 PAH and Emulsified Oil Oxidation Blower GAC Bioreactor 1 Air Diffusers GAC Bioreactor 2 PAH Monitor Cleaned Water Discharge Hydrocarbondegrading microbes are attached to support matrix Microbes are bonded to the matrix by a biological glue Oil and PAHs are degraded and consumed by microbes
EnScrub Closed-Loop Microbial Reaction Hydrocarbons from SOx Scrubber Microbial Oxidation CO 2 + H 2 O Non-toxic End Products
Open-Loop Treatment Multi-Cyclone
Open-Loop Treatment Multi-Cyclone is comprised of many hydrocyclones housed inside a vessel Each 25 mm hydrocyclone processes ~1.5 m3/hr 3 bar pressure Removes 90% of soot solids larger than 11 microns & 33% at 5 microns Hydrocyclone feed must be pre-screened (strainer) at 2 mm pore size Avoids ocean debris from plugging hydrocyclone inlets/outlets (4 mm orifices)
Multi-Cyclone Primary Multi-cyclone handles up to 900 m 3 /hr per system Solids slurry: discharged periodically from accumulator Secondary Multi-cyclone dewaters overflow from primary Underflow can be further dewatered in Closed-Loop biofilter
