3 Introdc on to Corses As yo approach the end of Year 11, many of yo have expressed an interest in joining or Sixth Form and this information booklet describes the corses of stdy which we hope to make available next September. ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY (AS) Advanced Sbsidiary corses were introdced in September 2000 for the award of the first qalification in Agst They may be sed in one of two ways: As a final qalification, allowing candidates to broaden their stdies. As the first half (50%) of an Advanced Level qalification. Advanced Sbsidiary is designed to provide an appropriate assessment of the knowledge, nderstanding and skills expected of candidates who have completed the first half of a fll Advanced Level qalification. Stdents choose for or five sbjects for AS, depending on their GCSE reslts. They mst obtain at least 5 GCSEs Grade A - C to do AS levels. ADVANCED LEVEL (AS + A2) The Advanced Level examination is in two parts: Advanced Sbsidiary (AS) - 50% of the total award A second examination called A2 50% of the total award Most Advanced Sbsidiary and Advanced corses will be modlar. Comprising of two teaching and learning modles or nits, AS may be completed at the end of one year and A2 by the end of the second year; however, stdents sally drop one sbject in the A2 year. VOCATIONAL EDUCATION Vocational Edcation corses at Sandhrst consist of BTEC National diplomas (for GCSEs eqivalent), which are taght at Sandhrst. Stdents choose one main sbject. Assessment is mainly by corsework. This type of corse is ideal for stdents who gain mainly D and E Grades at GCSE and are looking to bild a fondation for Level 3 stdies. COURSEWORK/FIELD VISITS In selecting A Level sbjects, stdents are advised to note that for many of them there is a sbstantial corsework element. This makes particlar demands on stdents in terms of planning. Stdents shold conslt Sbject Leaders abot the corsework element of the sbjects they may wish to stdy. Some sbjects involve fieldwork carried ot at residential centres away from Sandhrst. Fieldwork away from School also has cost implications. GCSE RETAKES Stdents who do not gain a Grade C in Maths or English have the opportnity to retake these sbjects.

4 Enrichment Ac vi es Closely associated with the PSHCCE programme are the Enrichment Activities, which aim at broadening the stdents knowledge of the world in which they live and will later work, as well as providing stdents with the opportnity to participate in a range of activities. Some stdents do not flly realise how mch they still have to learn abot their environment and tend to dismiss as irrelevant anything which is otside their immediate academic programme. Ftre employers and niversities have a wide field from which to choose and are demanding more from stdents. Stdents who can show an intelligent interest in local and world affairs, who have cltivated interests of their own, who are alert to the needs of others and who show a matre and enthsiastic approach to life will have an obvios advantage over those who are narrow-minded, prejdiced and bored! Not all of the Enrichment sessions are going to be of eqal interest to all stdents, bt it is important that they shold be prepared to listen, contribte and learn from the experiences offered to them. The Enrichment programme operates on an option based rota. The range of topics covered have inclded: Otdoor prsits Cooking on a Bdget Ice Skating First Aid Driving Safety Choir and Orchestra Health + Hygiene Certificate Sport and Fitness Stress Management Variety Explosion Swimming Assisting in lower school classes Theatre visits Visit to see a TV programme being filmed Dance Amnesty International campaign grops Enrichment : Dance Football Creative Screen Printing
