Assessments All students studying at the College undergo an assessment of their ability (except those attending for intensive short courses). Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process here at Rastrick. Our care, help and support will enable you to access the full curriculum of your chosen course of study and is central to our expertise. The assessments below take place at the start of your tutorial sessions. Tuition for Years 1 9 in Maths and English. Each child will be assessed for achievements in Maths and English, identifying strengths and weakness, enabling our tuition to be effective. This takes places during the first two tutorial lessons. 11+ Tuition. This is a College speciality and children are assessed in a full range of elements in order to determine their potential for Grammar School. We carry out an IQ potential, assess their ability and if a candidate is suitable, work out a tuition programme. This should start preferably at Year Three but we can assess and tutor a child at any point before the 11+ Examinations. These assessments are integrated into tutorial sessions. Appropriate assessment for each individual will be carried out during the tutorial sessions for the following courses or combination of courses: GCSE A-level Vocational Courses Page 6 Rastrick Independent School

Special Educational Support Rastrick Tutorial College has experienced, specialist tutors educating students who require support to reach their goals. We have established links with specialists at Local Educational Authorities and the 3D Centre in Halifax, West Yorkshire, to ensure students have the very best educational support. We work alongside all the agencies involved. If a pupil is deemed to have special educational needs, a statement or dyslexia, an Individual Educational Plan is established in conjunction with the student, parent and College. Together with an assessment of your child, we shall continue to support them with one on one tuition from our special needs tutors. Extra time would be sought for examination and emphasis given to enable your child to access the full curriculum. If a more detailed assessment of your child s needs is required, the College s own Educational Psychologist is available for referral. The College has experienced tutors of special educational needs and dyslexia. They teach and also advise and work alongside the tutor. If your child takes up tuition in any subject at the College from Years 1 9, assessment of their abilities and potential takes place during their first four lessons. Students will receive a learning pack which can be purchased from the College and consists of books at the appropriate level and need, a homework diary in order to liaise with parents and a range of homework papers, tests and books in order that your child can prepare for their next lesson whilst at home. Dyslexia Learning Support The College has a track record in diagnosing dyslexia and supporting children to cope with the demands of the curriculum and examinations at all ages. We understand the needs of families with a dyslexic child and offer personalised care, support and understanding to allow children to achieve their full potential. It is our belief there is absolutely no reason why a dyslexic cannot access the full curriculum and achieve their goals. We offer diagnostic testing for dyslexia. We have links with the 3D Centre in Halifax whose teachers are also employed by the College. The Centre also refers children who contact them to our College for educational progress and nurturing. After diagnosis, your child is then set an Individual Educational Plan which identifies targets for learning and involvement of parents and child. These successful methods apply to a school pupil or a college student. From day by day support, extra time at examinations, a reader or a scribe if deemed appropriate, we ensure a dyslexic student has all the support required. Through meticulous assessment of your child s needs and ongoing assessment of their progress, learning becomes more natural, stress free and effective. Please talk to us about your child s needs and together we can ensure our specialist teams can work with your family and ensure the chances for success academically and in the joy of learning for your child. Page 7 Rastrick Independent School

Personal Diagnostic Testing Our assessment programme includes a half day Personalised Diagnostic Assessment for external students who are not registered at the College. This is usually chosen by parents who wish to have an independent assessment of their child s ability and potential. This can enhance a diagnostic already given by your child s school and help you understand your child s potential and shape their future goals. This half day diagnostic programme will assess your child for IQ potential; establish where your child is on the learning curve for their age group, their ability and predictive tests for 11+ or GCSE. This personalised Diagnostic Programme also applies to dyslexia assessment or special educational needs. These services are available without subscribing to any course at the Tutorial College. Download our course matrix which indicates which subjects are offered at which level. Tuition at GCSE and IGSE Level Tuition is for all subjects. An assessment is the first step to see what the predicted grade will be at GCSE. A personalised learning programme will follow to include practicals, course work and controlled assessments. We operate a flexible learning programme, depending on your needs and progress to date. This could be tuition for a single subject, an intensive term s work for a re take or maybe you want to combine A-level study with upgrading GCSE grades. We can design a course of study and goals to suit your needs so your programme of learning will be unique to you. First Time GCSEs Although students normally join Rastrick Tutorial College having already taken GCSE exams, some may wish to take additional subjects or improve existing grades. Most universities require GCSE mathematics and English at grade C or above and there is often a requirement for other subjects, especially for science and language degrees. In order to begin A-level work, students are expected to have reached a satisfactory standard in GCSE or equivalent examinations. However, in some cases students may take GCSE subjects alongside their A-levels, either for the first time or as retakes in order to satisfy university matriculation requirements. The majority of those taking GCSE courses at the college are also taking A-levels. It is, however, possible to enrol at the college to take exclusively GCSE subjects. Some students who have started A-level courses without any previous experience in subjects such as Psychology, Economics and Law, may opt to take a GCSE in the subject as part of their preparation for the A-level. This may be a useful strategy, especially on a two-year A-level course. GCSE subjects are normally taught over one or two years as a first-time course and either for one term or one year as a retake. As with A-levels the choice is restricted for winter examinations, many subjects being unavailable. Most GCSE subjects involve a coursework element as well as a final exam and so sufficient time has to be devoted to preparing this. Students who wish to retake a GCSE subject are normally able to carry forward their coursework grade from the previous year or, if their previous grade was not high enough, they may re-work coursework and submit it again. Page 10 Rastrick Independent School

Continuous Assessment As part of your learning and teaching, your progress will be helped by timed tests and mock examinations using past papers. Course Structure For each GCSE subject, a minimum of three hours per week, for one or two years.the hours session is 55 minutes with a 5 minute break. For students taking science GCSE there will need to be extra time for practical examinations and controlled assessments. For language sstudents there will be additional time allocated for orals. The lessons are in small groups or individuals for one hour. This can be done during the school day, evenings, weekend or holidays. GCSE Re-sits Examinations for re-sits take place in November, January and March each year. However, the Boards only offer limited number of subjects at this time. All subjects are offered in May/June each year. We would prefer that a student spent a year on a re-sit and was adequately prepared to take a re-sit especially with practicals and continuous assessment. However, we do offer intensive courses for short term re-sits. You are able to join the college each year to retake GCSE subjects, either alongside first-time A-level courses or before starting A-levels. It may be necessary to retake one or more GCSE subjects simply to satisfy university matriculation requirements. For most universities, a minimum of five GCSE passes at grade C or above is a mandatory requirement and students should have attained at least this standard before beginning A-levels. For those who need to spend a further period of time re-taking GCSE subjects, a decision needs to be made as to how quickly to retake, which will depend on knowledge and aptitude in the subject, the amount of preparation work required, other work priorities and the availability of winter exam sittings. GCSE coursework is also a factor, as this may be carried forward or re-submitted, but is not transferable to a different examining board. We are happy to offer advice about GCSE preparation and retake strategies, either by telephone, or at interview. In most cases one or two subjects may be taken early, in November, with the remainder taken over a full academic year. Where only one or two subjects need to be retaken, to satisfy university requirements, it is normally possible to begin a couple of A-levels and to retake the GCSE subjects alongside these. Course Structure The standard structure for a GCSE retake course is three hours a week of group tuition week in each subject. Individual tuition is available if required. Students can join us for an intensive 10 week course to prepare for your re-sit at any time during the academic year. For students taking science GCSE there will need to be extra time for practicals and controlled assessments. For language students there will be additional time allocated for orals. November Re-sits This is a ten week intensive course from the beginning of September Weekly, this is two lessons of 1 hour Teaching is in small groups or through individual tuition January Re-sits From September, a full term of teaching Weekly, this is two lessons of 1 hour Teaching is in small groups or through individual tuition March Re-sits From September, a term and a half of teaching Weekly, this is two lessons of 1 hour Teaching is in small groups or through individual tuition Page 11 Rastrick Independent School

A2 and AS Level Study At Rastrick Tutorial and International College we offer a broad range of subjects from GCSE to AS and A2 level. Download our course matrix which indicates which subjects are offered at which level. A personal learning programme is given during your interview together with advice on which subjects to follow. At this level it is possible to combine this with extra GCSE subjects as upgrades or re-sits. The minimum lesson time required for each A-level subject is four hours a week. For students taking science A-levels there will need to be extra time for practicals and controlled assessments. For language students there will be additional time allocated for orals. Tuition can be done during the school day, evenings, weekend or holidays. First Time A-levels A-level courses normally take between three and six terms to complete. Students can join the college in September or at any time of the year. Two-Year Courses A Level courses comprise two parts, leading to AS examinations at the end of the first year, followed by A2 examinations at the end of the second year. In each year it is often possible to sit at least one of the unit exams in January, taking pressure off the summer examination sitting. Individual Tuition Some students respond well to one on one tuition, which is available at Rastrick Tutorial College. This encourages an active involvement in the learning process, with the student taking more direct responsibility for the development of understanding. A good output of preparation and written work is essential and students are expected to put in no less than three hours set work and private study per one-hour tutorial in order to gain sufficient benefit from the tutorial hours. Practicals For science, art theatre studies, music technology and CDT an extra hours tuition is required to cover course work for these pacticals. For the sciences examinations, as well as the written examination, a practical examination is required. This is one day at AS Level and one day at A2 Level. January A2 and AS Level Re-sits This gives students the opportunity to study for A-level retakes at both AS and A2 level. Full-year Retakes It is often preferable that students consider resits over a full academic year. In some subjects it may be the only option. If you are looking for a significant grade improvement in two or more subjects, it is the most sensible option. One year A-level courses are carefully structured, in consultation with the student, to make effective use of both the January and summer examination sessions; it may be possible to prepare a student fully for the January examinations in some modules, removing some of the final pressure in the summer and leaving more time for detailed preparation of the remaining modules. Courses normally begin in September, continuing until the January examination session. One-term resits may also begin in March, with examinations in June. A two-term resit, from January to June, is available, allowing more time to prepare. Combining Retakes and First-time Courses A student can combine retakes with first time courses at A-level and GCSE. January Retakes These are for students who have narrowly missed their target grade. Your study preparation and teaching will depend on which module they are retaking. Past papers provided Available for all subjects One term intensive course, small group or individual tuition Two lessons of 1 hour weekly Practical sessions are additional where necessary Summer Resits One term option from March Available for all subjects One term intensive course, small group or individual tuition Two lessons of 1 hour weekly Practical sessions are additional where necessary Two terms resit from January to June Available for all subjects Two term intensive course, small group or individual tuition Two lessons of 1 hour weekly. Practical sessions are additional where necessary Summer Retakes Plus your own study time This can be done during the school day, evenings, weekend or holidays Course Structure Small group or individual tuition Four hours tuition is required per week, per subject You will be required to take time to prepare for each tuition session. Home study and advice will be given Page 12 Rastrick Independent School

Our speciality is providing a safe, secure yet challenging education for young people. Ours is a very different environment to a large sixth form college which may not be the most appropriate setting for some young people, especially those who have been home schooled or those who do not like crowds. In the Sixth Form College we prepare students for public examinations but in addition to this, we prepare them for leaving school and moving to university or employment. We offer a highly personal approach modelled on a tutorial system at all ability levels, including those who have not been able to achieve their full potential in a conventional school setting.
