15 Reading Comprehension Worksheet Community Helpers Doctors are responsible for the diagnosis, care and treatment of illnesses, diseases, infections and for the well-being of people. They may work in a variety of settings such as in a hospital or as a family doctor. Hospital doctors can go on to specialize in particular areas of medicine such as pathology, psychiatry and pediatrics, or surgery, such as orthopedics and ophthalmology. Learning to be a doctor involves a long and expensive course of study. You will generally spend 5 years as an undergraduate at medical school. You will then have to complete a residency for the years required for the specialty you pick. You then can apply to the American Medical Association to become a fully licensed doctor and may have to successfully complete exams for your area of certification. Contemporary medicine is challenging and exciting. Countless new discoveries are making their impact on medical practice, and doctors now qualifying will see even more dramatic changes in the future, with the development of many new techniques, involving not only drugs, but methods arising from research in electronics, nuclear physics, genetics and molecular biology. 1. What do doctors do for a living? 2. Approximately, how many years of training and preparation are needed to be eligible for a residency? 3. What is required to obtain a license or certification? 4.
