New healthcare positions accounted for 18 percent (or 475,000) of the 2.7 million jobs added to the U.S. economy in Hospital hiring was particularly robust, growing by 172,000 positions and accounting for 36 percent of total healthcare jobs created. On Health ecareers, 6,998 employers recruited healthcare professionals through 183,901 job postings in More than 50,000 positions were posted in the last quarter alone. The American Medical Association (AMA) recently announced the top nine issues it expects to affect physicians in Among them were Medicare reform and its Merit-Based Incentive Payment system, the EHR meaningful use program, insurance mergers and health data security. Additionally, the AMA noted that critical funding for graduate medical education (GME) is in danger of being cut by Congress. The AMA encourages all physicians to get involved in the grassroots Save GME campaign that addresses this issue as well as simplifying the student loan application process and improving repayment rules under the Higher Education Reauthorization Act. Since the Institute of Medicine suggested the removal of scope-ofpractice barriers, eight more states have changed their laws to give NPs full practice and prescriptive authority. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a final rule in 2012 broadening the concept of medical staff and permitting hospitals to allow advance practice registered nurses (APRNs), PAs and pharmacists to perform all of the functions within their scope of practice. More nurses are getting their first jobs outside of the hospital according to data from the RN Work Project at New York University. The study found that about 76 percent of new nurses got jobs in U.S. hospitals in 2012 compared to 87 percent who did so in The researchers theorize that this could be due to new approaches in care that focus more on patient outcomes and improving quality of life than on patient volume and fee-for-service medicine. RNs may be finding case management and ambulatory care jobs in the community more desirable than traditional hospital opportunities. According to the Pharmacy Workforce Center s National Pharmacist Workforce Survey, pharmacists are performing more patient care activities and spending less time dispensing medications. In 2014, 60 percent of pharmacists provided medication therapy management and 53 percent performed immunizations. This was a dramatic increase from 13 percent and 15 percent in From 2009 to 2014, the percentage of time that fulltime pharmacists spent on services such as medication dispensing decreased from 55 percent to 49 percent. 31% increase in pharmacy jobs posted from Q3 to Q by Health ecareers An increasing number of college students are seeking help for mental health issues. According to a report released by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State University, more students are reporting depression, anxiety and social anxiety. About 20 percent of the total student body is seeking treatment, and taking up about half of all campus counseling center appointments as a result. Data was collected from 100,736 students and 139 college and university counseling centers from and There may be too few psychiatrists to meet the growing need across the U.S. According to Lloyd Sederer, chief medical officer of the New York State Office of Mental Health and adjunct professor at Columbia University s Mailman School of Public Health, the number of doctors choosing psychiatry as a specialty has not kept pace with the growth of our nation s population. While total psychiatrists in the U.S. increased by 12 percent from 1995 to 2014, the population grew by 37 percent. Additionally, a 2010 survey found that 59 percent of psychiatrists were nearing retirement age.
