1 DALLAS ALUMNAE PANHELLENIC ASSOCIATION Dear High School Senior Woman: Member Sororities Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Gamma Delta Alpha Omicron Pi Alpha Phi Alpha Xi Delta Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Gamma Delta Zeta Gamma Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Phi Mu Pi Beta Phi Sigma Kappa Sigma Sigma Sigma The sorority women of the Dallas Alumnae Panhellenic Association want to introduce you to a unique experience that you are sure to find both educational and enjoyable. It is SORORITY LIFE. Sororities promote high scholarship, personal development, leadership, good citizenship, service to others and lifelong friendship. We hope you will want to explore the possibility of membership for yourself. There are 26 National Panhellenic Conference sororities, many of which have representatives here in the Dallas area. Panhellenic Alumnae represent a cooperative effort of local sorority women who wish to promote sorority ideals and continue the friendships made while in college. We are college alumnae who may be your neighbor, your history teacher, or your mom s best friend. Sororities choose new members each year through a mutual selection process called Membership Recruitment. In order to participate, you need to register for Recruitment with the Panhellenic office at the college/university you will attend (recruitment information is sometimes sent with other college/university registration materials). If you do not receive this recruitment information, write or telephone the Panhellenic office (each college/university Panhellenic has a website). You must register for recruitment with the Panhellenic office at your college/university. Attend our Recruitment Forum on February 10, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Northway Christian Church 7202 West Northwest Highway Dallas, TX This is an informational session about recruitment and sorority membership. You can register with Dallas Alumnae Panhellenic Association by going to our website. The Recruitment Information Form on our website will be made available to 19 member sororities of our Association. Attached is a summary of the Recruitment Forum Presentation, Dallas Alumnae Panhellenic Association form from our website and other useful information to help you learn about SORORITY LIFE. Join us. Sincerely, Zeta Tau Alpha Serena Serena Cole Fraternity Education Chair Lindsey Lindsey Hankinson Assistant Fraternity Education Chair
2 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SORORITIES AND RECRUITMENT 2013 WHY JOIN A SORORITY? WHAT IS SORORITY MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT? HOW DO I PREPARE FOR SORORITY RECRUITMENT? Sororities were created with the desire for friendship, leadership, scholarship and philanthropy. They continue to provide these opportunities. Sororities offer programs and leadership development that women students might not otherwise have the opportunity to receive. Sororities offer a Home away from Home by providing membership in a group of women with similar interests and goals. Membership in a sorority is a lifetime opportunity not just for your college years. There are sorority alumnae chapters in almost every area of the country and some overseas. This is an instant way to network with people when you move to a new area. Each year sororities increase their membership through a mutual selection process called recruitment. It is 2-4 rounds of parties or events intended for you and the sorority women to meet and for you to learn more about sorority life. The emphasis is on conversation and getting to know each other. This is the time to learn about the values, traditions and programming of the individual sororities. Recruitment is different at every campus. Traditionally, colleges/universities conduct formal recruitment at the beginning of Fall term, but contact your campus for more information. Register with your college/university Panhellenic Association to participate in recruitment as soon as you are admitted. This is a must. The registration process varies by campus. Most college/university Panhellenics offer their services via the internet. Be aware of deadlines. Ask what materials/information you need to submit i.e. pictures, transcripts, fees to pay, resume, etc. Prepare a resume which includes school and social activities, offices and honors, athletic participation, volunteer work, family Greek affiliation and anything else that may be of interest. Contact your high school to obtain a copy of your transcript to be attached with your resume. Gather photographs of yourself after determining what each sorority requires. Contact sorority alumnae and ask them if they will complete a reference letter for you. The easiest way is to ask your teachers at school, your mother s friends, your friends mothers, your guy friends mothers. The type and number of reference letters is different for each sorority. Contact the sorority s local or national
3 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SORORITIES AND RECRUITMENT 2013 website or area Recruitment Chair for specifics. WHERE IS RESUME, TRANSCRIPT, LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION, PHOTOS, ETC. SENT? SHOULD I REGISTER ON THE DALLAS ALUMNAE PANHELLENIC WEBSITE? Before May 1, they are sent to the local area Sorority Alumnae Recruitment Chair. You need to be aware of each group s deadline. If you miss deadlines, you need to contact the college/university Panhellenic about where to send your information for Recruitment. Yes, your registration with Dallas Alumnae Panhellenic is another way to show that you intend to participate in sorority recruitment. The deadline is May 1. The information form that you fill out on line or by mail will be made available to the 19 members of the Dallas Alumnae Panhellenic Association. This will alert the sorority to be looking for your letters of reference and photos which are being written and submitted directly to the local area Sorority Alumnae Recruitment Chair. The Reference letter, photos or transcripts are not mailed to Dallas Alumnae Panhellenic. The website is. HOW CAN DALLAS ALUMNAE PANHELLENIC HELP ME? An important part of our Alumnae Panhellenic mission is to provide high school women seniors and parents, who reside in or attend a private or public school in Dallas with information about the benefits of Greek life. Annually a Sorority Recruitment Forum is held to which all senior women in North Texas are invited. Alumnae and collegiate women are on hand to answer questions about Recruitment and Sorority Membership. WHAT IS A LEGACY? Each sorority has its own definition of a legacy. It is generally defined as a daughter or sister of an initiated member. Some sororities also recognize a granddaughter, step-daughter or step-sister. Sororities try to extend every courtesy to legacies and try to get to know them, but sororities cannot guarantee invitations or membership. At times, there are more legacies entering recruitment than a college chapter has membership openings. Legacies must meet the same qualification standards that non-legacies meet. If you are legacy to any sororities, you should list them on your resume. WHY DO I NEED TO PREPARE A RESUME? Resumes provide alumnae who are writing references with information to complete their forms. They also provide the sorority with valuable information about your background and interests, which will assist them
4 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SORORITIES AND RECRUITMENT 2013 WHAT IS THE COST OF BELONGING TO A SORORITY? WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT REFERENCE AND/OR LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION? in conversation during recruitment and in feeling like they know you better. Expenses for membership include pledge fees, initiation fees, building fees and dues. Fees will vary by sorority, so to secure accurate information regarding the expenses for each sorority chapter on your campus, go to the college website under Greek Life or Panhellenic Council. Sorority membership costs may vary from year to year. You and your parents should be clear about the financial responsibility before registering for recruitment. Failure to meet financial obligations can result in loss of membership. 1. Inform your friends and family of your intent to participate in recruitment. The Dallas Alumnae Panhellenic does not provide references. Therefore, the easiest way to obtain your references is to ask your teachers at school, your mother s friends, your friends mothers and your guy friends mothers if they are in a sorority member. 2. If they are, you can ask them if they would feel comfortable writing a reference for you. They will then contact their sorority to find out where to send the reference and to find out what information and photos are required. This varies by schools and sororities. References are not mailed to Dallas Alumnae Panhellenic. 3. A reference is similar to a job reference. It is a form written by a sorority alumna to introduce you to a sorority chapter. It provides a means of introduction, but does not guarantee an invitation to membership from that sorority. They are personal endorsements and allow the sorority members to get to know you before recruitment begin. 4. It is the responsibility of the sorority alumna who s completing the form to obtain, complete and submit it in the manner and time required by her group. If she is unaware of the guidelines or does not have a reference form, she can go to sorority website. Links to each group can be found at under Membership. 5. An alumna wishing to write a reference does not need to be a graduate of the college/university you will attend. She only needs to be a member of a sorority with a chapter on that campus. 6. When you are providing information for a reference, include, resume, high school transcript, legacy affiliations, activities and honors. Always follow up with a thank you note.
