MOSIER : TRANSPORTATION HUB Train Depot Steamboat: Passenger/Freight Historic Columbia River Highway: Connecting Mosier to the Gorge Rockin Main Street Mosier: 33 Businesses 9
LOSS OF TRANSPORTATION DIVERSITY= LOSS OF VITALITY BY 1970, the steamboat, the train depot, and the Columbia River highway were gone. And with them went Main Street. 10
2000: RECONNECTION AND REVITALIZATION Ice Cream and Porsches Pub Coffee Visitors arrive by bike! 11
A TOTEM POLE, A PORTA-POTTY, AND SOME DIRT. Mosier needs a HUB! What s a Hub? 12
WHAT IS A HUB? Community operated rest stops for hikers, bicyclists, recreationalists, and community members. Hubs can act as a local welcome station. Hubs attract different user groups by including different amenities such as: Information kiosk maps & community calendar Water fountain Restrooms Electrical outlet for charging phones, etc. Bicycle parking Benches / picnic areas Lockers / storage Bicycle repair station Loaner locks 13
HUB AMENITIES ART SHELTER/INFO. BIKE REPAIR 14
WHY DO WE NEED A HUB? To encourage Gorge recreationists to stay in the local communities and contribute to the local economy. Bridge the gap between the State Trail and our main streets and downtown services. Support and promote bicycle tourism along the State Trail. Creates a brand identity for each community. Provides visitors with a seamless & welcoming experience. 15
