(Nehemiah 8:12, NIV) FOREWORD This manual is intended to help you have a productive evangelistic event, but by no means should be considered totally inclusive. We suggest that you get a copy of the special evangelistic events material available through the North American Mission Board and/or conduct special evangelistic event training for your workers prior to using this resource. (namb.net) This manual is intended for use with the Block Party Trailer. It is imperative that you read and heed this manual. We encourage reproducing the pages that relate to operating the various machines and set-up of tents. Be assured of our prayers as you prepare to present the love of the Lord Jesus to a pagan world in a way of Low Risk/High Grace. God bless you and your church as you enjoy the ministry of evangelism. MINISTRY There are several advantages to having the portable block part trailer and being involved in this kind of ministry. Once you become familiar with using the block party concept for outreach, new work or church growth, opportunities will present themselves at every turn.

A Block Party Trailer affords the opportunity for conducting Evangelistic Block Parties for groups who might not otherwise be able to afford one. Since the trailer in mobile, it will also provide the opportunity to have more block parties than otherwise be held. EQUIPMENT All scheduling for the Block Party Trailer is done through the Association Ministry Assistant. 3 Table Games for Adults (Dominos, Checkers, Uno, etc) 4 Children Carnival Games Welcome Banners Dolly and Straps for large moonwalk Fire Extinguisher Trailer Door Lock Trailer Tongue Lock Since there is considerable investment in the trailer and its contents, users are asked to take the greatest precautions and care in their use of the Block Party Trailer. It should be secured from the time it is picked up until the time it is returned. POLICIES Booking: Churches should contact the Bradley Baptist Association for availability (bcbaclev@bellsouth.net or ). If the requested date is available, the church s name will be put on the calendar. Requests are honored on a first come first served basis. It is the requesting church s responsibility to make sure that their request gets into the BBA office as soon as possible. It is recommended that reservations be made at least one month in advance of any planned evangelistic outreach. Please keep in mind that when you reserve your dates, transportation needs to be included when booking the trailer. Use: Priority will be given first to evangelistic efforts and then to church planting efforts. The trailer is intended to be used as a packaged resource. Equipment will not be booked separately or removed from the unit. Churches using the equipment are responsible for cleaning and replacing the equipment in its proper

4 places. Churches need to notify the association at once of any malfunctioning or missing equipment. The churches are expected to pay for their own food supplies (popcorn, snow cone syrup, cotton, etc.) and paper products (popcorn bags, etc.) Vendor supplies can be purchased at Supreme Restaurant Equipment, 7917 Old Lee Hwy. Ooltewah, TN, ; Billy Haney Meat Company, 2147 Old Charleston Road, Charleston, TN 37310, ; Cleveland Tent & Rental Company, 2355 South Lee Hwy., Cleveland, TN 37311, ; Bradley Rentals, 336 Grove Avenue, Cleveland, TN 37311, Churches are required to secure any permits, licenses required for their area. Cost: Bradley Baptist Churches will be charged $50 for a day or more. This fee covers maintenance and wear and tear. The fee is paid at the time of confirmation of reservation and is non-refundable. Make check or money order payable to Bradley Baptist Association and send to Bradley Baptist Association, 2707 North Ocoee Street, Cleveland, TN Reporting: There is a statistical report in the trailer that each church must to complete at the conclusion of their event. This is critical information and allows us to evaluate the effectiveness of the ministry as well as keep up with equipment maintenance. There will also be an incident report available in the trailer should anything happen that we would need to attend to at a later time. If any injuries incurred requiring use of the first-aid kit or other incidences we need to be made aware of, we ask that you complete an incident report. Please check the inventory report and notify our office of any missing items ASAP. We would also ask that you send us written testimonies to tell us how God used the trailer to advance kingdom work through your ministry.

5 PREPARATIONS There are some things that are essential to a successful Block Party. The following is not an exhaustive list, but will cover most of the crucial areas. Date: Selecting a date that is conducive to the greatest number of people attending is very important. For example, in the summer, children are out of school; in the late evening, families can attend. Also, you need to take into account other events such as Little League playoffs, fairs, Vacation Bible Schools, church events, etc., must be considered when planning the date of a Block Party. Time: Experience in other areas has shown that on weekdays late afternoons and evenings work best. Saturdays are often good. As a rule, anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. is considered acceptable. You need to be aware of and keep in mind the heartbeat of your community. Publicity: Announcements in community calendar programs, local radio stations, cable access, and trader magazines are all free. Announcements in local newspapers may have some effect, but a door-to-door blitz/canvassing remains the most effective. The first blitz of your community should be two weeks in advance of the evangelistic event. Housing projects, trailer parks and housing complexes normally have a monthly newsletter of which you would want to take advantage. Advance planning is the key to a successful event! Any promo should emphasize that everything is free and is sponsored by a church (name of your church). Either on the day of the block party, on the day before, the final blitz should be made. This should be an extensive blitz, targeting especially those areas that have been previously canvassed. A positive

6 church attitude is vital to the evangelistic block party. A close check insuring that all equipment is available and in working condition before the event is very important. TRANSPORTATION Transporting the trailer requires a hitch with two-inch ball and electrical connections. The overall dimensions of the Block Party Trailer are: 6 x 12 x 6.5. It is a single axle. The total weight of the trailer is approximately 1,000 lbs. The church using the Block Party Trailer is responsible for pick-up and return of the Block Party Trailer from Bradley Baptist Church (2707 North Ocoee Street, Cleveland, TN, ( ). Times and dates of pick up MUST Be Confirmed. SET-UP In order to insure that you will be serving safe and non-contaminated food, please clean the equipment before using it. Upon opening the trailer, note the arrangement of the contents. It will help you later when packing. Find a level spot to set up so that the machines function properly. The canopies are in black bags located in the back of the trailer. You will need both canopies if using all four machines. These are pop-up canopies, and will require four people to set up in only a minute. When removing the tents from the bags, be careful not to lose the stakes. Hold canopy upright, each person holding a corner pole. Walk away from the center, pulling out your corner. Be careful that your hands are not caught by the sliding metal bar. Place your foot on the bottom ledge of the pole, and pull up until the center and top supports each click into place (you should push until you see and hear both supports click). If in setting up the tent something seems to catch, do not force it. Something is not right. Check to make sure all four corners are at the same point of setup. Position tent in desired area. Unload and position desired number of tables. All tables that will be used for the machines must be placed under a tent. Tables should be arranged so that workers stand under the tent and lines may form outside. Only one machine may be used on a table.

7 POWER Generator the generator is gas powered and will only provide 19 amps of power. You must find a secondary power source if you use more than two machines (i.e. from church building or alternate two machines at a time). The power cords are located in the supply bin. The power usage of each machine is as follows: Snow Cone Popcorn 8.1 amps 15 amps It is a good idea to plug the popcorn machine into the secondary power source and use the generator for the snow cone machine. Often a building can provide enough power for all four machines provided you get power from different rooms and only two machines are run from each room. To turn on generator, follow these steps: 1. Turn the metal gasoline valve clockwise to open the gas lines. 2. Click the Choke-Run switch on the opposite side left to choke which resembles N. 3. Twist the ON/OFF dial to ON. 4. Check to see if the oil light is on and oil is needed. 5. Pull the string to crank engine. 6. Immediately click Choke/Run switch right to Run. 7. Wait five minutes and then plug in extension cords on left-hand side of outlet face. To turn off the generator, follow these steps: 1. Unplug all extension cords from outlet face 2. Twist the ON/OFF dial to OFF

8 3. Turn the metal gasoline valve counter-clockwise to close off gas line. EQUIPMENT SETUP, USE, CLEAN-UP Cleaning the equipment is very important and must be done immediately after use. If the equipment was not cleaned properly by the person using it before you, you must clean it before you use it (please let someone in the office know if the previous user did not properly clean the equipment). Some of the machines have special instructions regarding water, etc. Please follow these guidelines carefully. As the equipment is electrical, please unplug the machines before cleaning. NOTE: Do not use any bleach products to clean the machines; use soapy water and rags or sponges. Do not immerse ANY of the machines in water. Wipe down all tables with soapy water, dry. Before repacking the BPT, be sure to return all scoops, ladles, etc. to their proper places. The snow cone and popcorn machines both have equipment of this nature, so please make sure it all returns to the BPT. SNOW CONE MACHINE SETUP If planning to use the Snow Cone machine, remove the large cooler and fill it with ice. You must provide your own pumps, scoops, etc. Place filled cooler behind table designated for Snow Cones. The Snow Cone machine is the heavy silver machine on the right shelf in the trailer. Place on table so that the side with the open bottom faces you. Slide the white tray, removed from the cooler, under the machine. USE To grind ice, flip the on-switch on the left side of the machine and pull up the handle on the right topside. Scoop ice from the cooler, fill the machine, and close with the handle. Do not force the handle; the machine will grind without much pressure. Ice will fill the white bucket beneath the machine. Occasionally shift the bucket so that ice does not build up directly beneath the spout and cause the machine to jam. Use the blue ladle to scoop out balls of ice and fill the snow-cone cups. Pump syrup onto ice, using one good long squirt. Do not

9 let children serve themselves, ie., squirting the syrup pumps this gets incredibly messy and wasteful. If the machine does jam, turn off the machine and use the spoon handle to dig out the jammed ice. NEVER PUT YOUR HAND DIRECTLY INTO THE SHAVER. (Don t worry, syrup generally washes out of clothes and will wipe easily off the tables.) CLEAN-UP Remove pumps from syrup, pour syrup remaining in pumps back into the jugs, replace jug caps. Dump out water and ice from the white tray and the cooler. Wash cooler, tray, pumps, scoops, and ladle with soapy water; dry every item and store smaller items in the green cooler. The ice machine does not require washing, but needs to be dried to prevent rusting. POPCORN MACHINE SETUP The popcorn machine is located on the top shelf in the BPT. To remove the popcorn machine, you must first remove the wood shelf from above. Reach down and tilt the popcorn machine towards the wall of the BPT. You must bring the bottom out first. Carry the machine in a way so that the doors do not fly open, for they slide off easily. The popcorn machine should be placed on a table so that the doors face the worker. USE Turn on all three switches along the top inside of the machine. Open one side of the kettle lid and add half a stick of the butter. You will need a knife there are none on the BPT. When butter has melted, add six ounces of kernels and one scoop of flavoring (tiny scoop from inside tub). As popcorn pops, it will begin to fall from kettle. As you notice popping beginning to slow, dump kettle using the handle. Check kettle for remaining kernels; shake them loose and let them fall below. Repeat this process until five batches of popcorn are made. DO NOT MAKE MORE THAN FIVE (5) BATCHES AT ONE TIME. When finished with the five batches, turn off the two right switches, leaving on only the overhead light switch. Use the silver scoop to fill the bags. Kernels will fall through the holes and collect in the bottom drawer. CLEAN-UP - Do not attempt to clean the machine until completely cooled. Remove any remaining popcorn and empty the bottom drawer of kernels, etc. Remove doors. Unplug kettle and remove it by sliding it off the hinges. Wipe down everything thoroughly with soap and water; do not immerse any of this

10 equipment in soap and water. Replace doors, kettle, and drawer. Wash silver scoop with soapy water and return to tub. REPACKING THE BLOCK PARTY TRAILER It is extremely important that all equipment is secured properly with bungee cords in the trailer. Follow the trailer diagram for a view of equipment placement. Please load carefully to prevent equipment damage. Here are a few guidelines for loading: 1) First load the hotdog machine into the back right corner. 2) Replace the popcorn machine in its proper place. 3) Replace the wooden shelf above the popcorn machine. 4) (Those three things must be in before putting anything else in or it will not fit right.) 5) Follow the place diagram on the BPT door to replace the remaining items. 6) C heck to make sure that all the lids and caps are secured before loading. 7) Everything on the shelves MUST be secured by bungee cords. 8) The clear plastic dome from the cotton candy machine is fragile and should be carefully placed and loosely bungeed. 9) 9) Next, put in the tables, followed by the green cooler, the games boxes, the generator, basket of electrical cords and gas can. 10) Make sure the gas can is empty and secured. 11) Stand canopies in the every back.
