1 You can t leave the world, as it is POLISH JANUSZ KORCZAK ASSOCIATION The Polish Janusz Korczak Association is a non-governmental organization which promotes and popularizes the humanistic concepts and work of an eminent educator, publicist, writer, doctor and a social activist Janusz Korczak. In its activity (registered in Companies House in 2003) that has been carried out since 1997, the association has continued and increased the fifty-years of achievements of the Polish Korczak Committee. It accomplishes educational, cultural and pedagogic projects as well as preventive ones, being directed to children, teenagers and adults. It cooperates with academic communities the members of the association research into the work of Janusz Korczak and share the results. The Polish Janusz Korczak Association unites schools, institutions and non-governmental organizations either bearing the name of Janusz Korczak or working with children and teenagers using Korczak s methods. Since 2006, the association has been a public benefit organization implementing projects and providing assistance as well as organizational and content-related support pro publico bono. In Poland, PJKA (Pol. PSK) forms the federation of regional Korczak Branches. At present, there exist the following branches: Lower Silesia (Lower Silesia and Opole voivodeships), Lubuski Branch (lubuski voivodeship and West-Pomeranian), Łódź Branch (Łódź and Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship), Lesser Poland (Lesser Poland and Podkarpackie Voivodeship), Masovian Branch (Masovian and Lublin Voivodeship), Podlasie Branch (Podlaskie Voivodeship), Northern Branch (Kuyavian and Pomeranian, Pomeranian, Warmian Masurian Voivodeship), Silesian Branch (Silesian Voivodeship), The Józef Rusiecki College Branch in Olsztyn, Warsaw Branch (consisting of individual members of PSK). The branches, accepted in accordance with the principle of their own autonomy, have not only accomplished programmes in their local environment but also taken nationwide actions as well as joined the international Korczak movement. The motto of 2013 was: You can t leave the world, as it is. 1

2 KORCZAK PHILOSOPHY IN POLAND THE ACTIONS AND EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS TAKEN BY THE ASSOCIATION IN 2013 I. All year work in Korczak schools and institutions 1. School initiatives: the celebration of the Patron s Day in schools and institutions belonging to the our association, Patron s week Janusz Korczak Primary School in Jaroszów. contests of knowledge about the Old Doctor, his life and works, art and literature contests, cycle of activities with Patron, Janusz Korczak Primary School 2 in Nowa Ruda (Lower Silesia Branch). class activities, introducing Janusz Korczak s literary work to students during library and Polish classes, acquiring books about the Patron for libraries, editing and publishing articles about the Old Doctor in school newspapers, students council activity like Dni Samorządności as well as democratic elections for Student Board, sport events, eg. Korczakiada sportowa (Primary School 3 in Cieszyn). 2. Social initiatives: preparing events to promote the achievement of schools, including all Korczak related activities, eg ELFY STAREGO DOKTORA: visiting preschoolers and presenting Janusz Korczak (Primary School 1 in Rybnik), social events, festivals 2

In June, members of the Academic Korczak Group of Józef Rusiecki University in Olsztyn, with the support of volunteers and Student Government of the University, organized, for the second time, "Święto Radości" for children from Zatorze district, the motto was Barwy Zdrowia. organizing family festivals and Family Days, Family Day in Janusz Korczak SOSW in Sokółka, May "Kite Festival", which brings together schools and institutions of Silesia Branch, Keeping the schools and institutions "Patron of the school" website entries up to date. 3. The introduction of new forms of work with school students and alumni of institutions, such as the First Interschool Spelling Dictation based on the texts of Janusz Korczak (WCR 2 in Sosnowiec). II. Projects of PSK FIRST OPEN COMPETITION FOR EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS IMPLEMENTED IN COOPERATION WITH CHILDREN AND YOUTH. The winners of the competition were: Wincent Hipolit Gawarecki Primary School in Mała Wieś for the "UCU Skauting zmieniamy świat z ukulele" Zespół Szkolno-Gimnazjalny nr 7 in Radomsko for the Project Lajkujemy Korczaka, Group of Educational Institutions in Kadłub for the project Wokół menory czyli o dziedzictwie kulturowym wychowanków Janusza Korczaka." ACCORDING TO CHILDREN The project ACCORDING TO CHILDREN replaced the former Gadaninki which was conducted for years on PSK website by Marta Ciesielska. The idea of the project is to quote and comment interesting "sentences by children", their unique thoughts that can impress, amaze or even confuse us with wisdom, depth and originality You can also submit quotes - statements by heroes of Janusz Korczak s books. 3

4 III. Janusz Korczak Warsaw Educational Reward In October 2013 the Warsaw Educational Award for schools and institutions of Warsaw was established. Among others the members of the Chapter are Barbara Janina Sochal and Marta Ciesielska. The ceremony of awarding the nomination to the Chapter. XII Poznań Fair Trade meetings Books for Children and Youth The guests of XII Poznan Fair Trade meetings - Books for Children and Youth: the President of the Association of Book Publishers Rafał Skąpski, Izabella Kaluta - representative of the Books Institute, prof. Grzegorz Leszczynski, prof. Joanna Papuzińska, Dr Irena Skipor-Rybacka, Olcha Sikorska Fair Commissioner, and Barbara Janina Sochal, President of PJKA. Students, educators, writers, publishers and journalists first listened to their discussion and later participated in it. Participation of Zuzanna Popik and Monika Modrzejewska in the International Seminar. The Polish Jewish Pioneer on Children's Human Rights, Janusz Korczak, organized by the International Janusz Korczak Association at the Representation of the Polish Republic to the UN in Geneva. V. The ceremonie of giving schools and institutions the name of Janusz Korczak Giving the name to the nursery school 7 in Legionowo. 6 VI. Patronage 1. Conference Myśl Janusza Korczaka inspiracją dla edukacji XXI wieku On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Janusz Korczak College of Education TWP in Warsaw at the Faculty of Social Sciences there was a conference, which was held under the PSK patronage, April XXI National Healthy Lifestyle Olympics by Polish Red Cross The awards ceremony for the winners of the Olympics, May Warsaw Students Culture Festival O bezpieczeństwo i uśmiech dziecka, osób niepełnosprawnych i ich nauczycieli. VII. Jubilees 1. Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Janusz Korczak Youth Culture Centre in Krakow took place on 6-7 November 2013 in the Tempel Synagogue in Kazimierz, the gallery Shalom, and then at the headoffice facilities. Celebrations were prepared by Monika Modrzejewska, the director of the institution and a member of the Board of PSK with alumni, staff, parents and volunteers. Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Janusz Korczak Youth Culture Centre in Krakow, November Tempel Synagogue in Kazimierz, the anniversary symphony concert performed by the Beethoven Academy Orchestra extraordinary guest starring Julius Berger, playing the oldest cello in the world made in Orchestra conducted by Sebastian Perłowski, November

7 2. 10th anniversary of Secondary school 1 in Lędziny proudly bearing the name of Janusz Korczak VIII. Memorials 1. March of the living in Treblinka Participants of the March of the Living in Treblinka in front of the Central Monument, April Between 2 11 April 2013 over 3500 people visited Treblinka as the March of the Living was held. Among them were also young people from Korczak schools and institutions in Masovia Voivodeship. 2.Political-religious ceremony in Treblinka Ceremony in Treblinka, 7 September 2013 It s become a tradition of Janusz Korczak Primary School in Jasienica to visit Treblinka on the first Saturday of September to take part in the political-religious celebrations. The ceremony was also attended by official flag delegations from neighboring schools. This year, the participants wanted to pay a tribute to those murdered in Prison Labor Camp and all the victims of the Second World War, and prayed for peace in Syria. The ceremony was attended by about 400 people. Among them were prisoners Irena Jacewicz-Ziółkowska and Zygmunt Chłopek. IX. Supporting young talents Exhibition in Schönborn-Batthyány Palace in Viena, nearly 150 artists from around the world. Among the participants there was our Polish representative - Mariusz Kędzierski - Winner of the Best Global Artist Awards International Contest, October

Charity As a part of helping children and young people there were many charity events held in The Silesia Branch is a good ex ample: Dar serca, Wyprawka dla ucznia, Jesteś Korczakowcem podziel się (Primary School 3 in Czeladź); Łańcuch Serc charity event held to provide help for students in need as well as Choinka Nadziei local action of students visiting elderly people living in hospitals or nursing homes. (Primary School 1 in Rybnik); school fairs organized for a specific purpose; transferring funds to foundations, such as "Pomóż i Ty" for the hearing-impaired children; help for animals in shelters (Primary School in Czeladź, Primary School 3 in Cieszyn). Korczak institutions also participated in the national charities, such as Góra grosza or Wielka orkiestra świątecznej pomocy. XI. 9 XIV. Janusz Korczak Holiday Students of Janusz Korczak SOSW in Złotoryja on a Szczecin Amsterdam cruise. The aim of the Project was to provide equal educational chances for Young people from different Korczak institutions. It was organized in cooperation with STS Fryderyk Chopin Foundation and the office of the STS Fryderyk Chopin sailing ship, September Korczakowo Holiday This year s Holiday was divided into 2 turns: traditionally the three week camp for students of Secondary and High Schools, and the two week camp for younger students. The camp for teenagers was international besides the 160 Polish participants there were also young people from the USA, Israel, Germany and Austria. Everything that happened was described in Mały Przegląd published in Korczakowo. XV. Janusz Korczak Internet Web Page Throughout the year the Association s Web Page has been updated with information about events, taking place in the PSK in Information has been prepared by Barbara Sochal 9
