ATD Czwarty Świat ATD Fourth World - Poland All Together for Dignity!
The International Movement ATD Fourth World is a non-governmental organization with no religious or political affiliation. It engages with individuals and institutions to find solutions to eradicate extreme poverty.
The Range of the Movement The movement was founded in 1957 by Joseph Wrzesiński. Today it operates in many countries in Europe, Africa, North and South America, in the area of the Indian Ocean and in Asia. It has general consultative status with UNICEF, UNESCO, ECOSOC, the International Labour Organization and the Council of Europe and has a permanent delegation at the European Union.
Our Projects in 2010
Innovations 2010 The aim of the project is to exchange experiences in volunteering and professional social work regarding innovative social actions addressed to children and their families living in poverty and social exclusion. Main issues: Indentifying risk factors and protecting welfare of family Inviting those who receive social assistance to work on the project as experts and advisors. Identifying and comparing good practices in social and educational domain.
Social Charter 2010 The international movement ATD Fourth World started a campaign for the civic dialogue regarding ratifying revised European Social Charter whose aim is to make one step further toward admitting the dignity and human rights to all people. European Social Charter contains rights and liberties and states controlling mechanisms for guarantying that they are respected. Due to the protocol the complaints can be directed to the European Committee of Social Rights.
9th European Meeting of People Experiencing Poverty ATD has prepared Polish delegation for the international meeting in Brussels organized by the European Anti-Poverty Network. The subtitle of the meeting was the appeal: People want more participation in what affects their everyday life! the 9th European Meeting of People experiencing poverty took place at the European Parliament on 25 June 2010 and at the European Commission the next day.
International Conference Extreme Poverty and Human Rights Challenge for Poland, Challenge for Europe. The conference was held under the auspices of Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament. After the conference has been elaborated the message, where the crucial questions of extreme poverty and human rights are mentioned (such as: access to legal advices, housing poverty, debt problem, children s education etc.).
Pokolenie 2010 : Generation 2010
General Aims of the Project Introducing youth to social work and volunteering. Encouraging to independent activities at the local level and to initiatives of civic participation. Establishing a dialogue with politicians. Collecting ideas for more specific projects to be executed in following years.
Why Youth? Young people will take the responsibility and form our world in the forthcoming decades. They are not many as they account for about 20% of the European population.
Youth vs Children: Tapori, Street Libraries The project is not addressed only to the youngsters: its aim is to involve intergenerational cooperation. We want young people to meet children and adults.
Youth vs Adults: Civic dialogue Youth delegation meeting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Why Year 2010? We insist on involving those who have fewer opportunities to grow and to develop. Our approach is to learn from the most excluded people and to share this knowledge with the wider society. An extremely important goal of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion is to empower people experiencing poverty to have their voice heard and so lead to fulfilling their potential.
Our Partners Association Monar: - Rehabilitation & Readaptation Center Monar Wyszków - Neighbours Aid Center MonarMarkot Warsaw Youth Clubs Wolna Strefa (Free Zone) & Młoda Strefa (Young Zone) Kielce Mutual Aid Association Barka Strzelce Opolskie The Robert Schuman Foundation of Poland
Challenges Young people in poverty lack self-confidence and they are not aware of their abilities. They need to learn that they are equal. Former drug addicts and former prisoners have undergone periods of separation from the society and now they need to find their new way of existing in its frames. People got used to the fact that authorities are alienated and they still feel that nothing depends on them. Discovering the power of civil initiatives and its mechanisms is an important task. Young people who have managed to overcome their weaknesses struggle with their past and stereotypes and are especially susceptible to social exclusion.
First Meetings: Integration December 5-6, Warsaw. Integration games and trust building activities. Happening. March 6-7, Wire sculpture, caricature, board games, slam.
Let s do something for others! May 5-9, Wyszków. Young people organize a festival for the citizens of Wyszków: face painting, knights' fights, playing drums, riding a pony, DIY workshops
The Europe Day: Let us be proud of ourselves! May 8, Warsaw. Schuman's Parade for European integration
Meeting at the International Level July 15-22, Jambville, France. Workshops, artistic activities and discussions which were to lead to the formulation of the Appeal and the Postulates for EU Institutions.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (Warsaw) Meeting with the representatives of European Commission in Poland; Happening in the Theatre before the musical show Les Misérables.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (Kielce) Panel discussion on volunteering at the Świętokrzyski University Integration festival at the Coach Station Meeting at the Commemorative Stone in Honor of the Victims of Poverty
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (Brussels) The Appeal of Youth Postulates for European institutions Meetings with Ban Ki-moon, Jerzy Buzek, deputies, politicians, social workers etc. Happenings Performances Workshops Discussions
Karawana Bruksela The homeless, the former drug addicts, the students, the social workers cycling together to reach Brussels on October 17.
Social Effects of the Project Breaking down the stereotypes and prejudices touching former drug addicts, the homeless, the poor, former prisoners, foreigners... Building a social network of people who want to get engaged. Raising self-esteem of the young touched with social exclusion.
The ATD Role The ATD role is only to facilitate the actions invented and prepared by the young people. We provide them knowledge on how to cooperate, experiences of being together and working for the mutual goal, we try to raise their self-esteem and show some paths of possible development. However, we want people to understand, that they can act independently: in frames of the ATD Movement and beyond it: as citizens, in their private life, in work.
Thank you!
