19 Reading Tips 7 Here are some engaging ways to use this book to help children build important early math skills. Before Reading: 4 Create a sense of excitement by using a wet sponge to write the numeral 7 on a chalkboard. Can children guess what you ve written before it disappears? 4 Invite each of the children to trace the numeral 7 in the air and to hold up seven fingers. 4 Display the book s cover. Ask children to identify the numeral 7 in the top right corner. What objects do they see seven of? (seven hats) Then ask kids to use picture clues to predict what might happen in the story. During Reading: 4 Read the story straight through with gusto. This will give kids an opportunity to enjoy its whimsical plot and rollicking rhyme. 4 Read the story a second time. Invite children to explore the illustrations and to locate and count the sets of seven. 4 Read the story a third time. Call attention to moments when the word seven appears in the text. If you like, encourage kids to clap seven times whenever they hear the word. After Reading: 4 Display the Can You Find? picture on pages Challenge children to locate and count the requested objects as well as other sets of seven (including seven lemon slices, seven bandannas, seven forks, seven plates, and seven glasses). 4 Read Seven Cheer on page 16 several times, encouraging children to chime in and enthusiastically perform the designated movements including seven claps, seven jumps, and seven stomps. 4 To reinforce number sense, give each of the children a set of manipulatives such as dried beans, snap beads, or plastic teddy bear counters. Challenge kids to organize them into groups of seven. For added fun, work together to make a Seven Collage in which you clip sets of seven items from magazines (such as pictures of seven hats, seven oranges, seven trees), then affix them to posterboard and display.
