2 Target Audience Grade 2 Social Studies Up to 26 students Multicultural student groupings Various skill levels
3 The BIG Idea Symbols of our country Importance of the representations of our country Essential Questions What symbols best represent our country and its values? Why are these symbols important to our country and its citizens?
4 Lesson Description Encourage student participation in a whole group discussion about our country, the United States of America. Discuss symbols as things that are used to represent other ideas or values. Use the example of a four leaf clover to symbolize luck. Ask students what other things are symbols for good luck. View and discuss symbols of the United States. Why do these symbols represent our country? What do they mean to us? Use attached photos to identify each symbol. Read the captions to describe why each symbol stands for our country and why it is important. Complete curriculum workbook activity. Students may also complete a memory match game of the US symbols with a partner, if time allows.
