2 Page 2 Mission Statement The mission of the Division of Music is to offer quality educational opportunities in music that provide students with the technical skills and the theoretical and historical knowledge necessary for competence in their chosen areas of concentration, and To prepare students at the baccalaureate level for successful careers in teaching and other musical occupations; To prepare students in music for successful graduate study; To provide students opportunities for cultural and aesthetic experiences through active participation in music; Degrees To offer general education course work in music for all students of the University; To provide cultural and aesthetic experiences for the University, the community, and southeast Arkansas through the presentation of recitals, concerts, musical theatre productions, master classes, workshops, and seminars. The Division of Music provides academic programs which led to the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree and the Bachelor of Music Education degree. Faculty and Staff In , the Division of Music operated with the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, six fulltime faculty members (including the Assistant to the Dean for Music), a Visiting Assistant Professor, three adjunct faculty, one Graduate Assistant, one half-time Non-Student Extra Help employee, and one secretary. Music Students Seventy-four students were music majors in 2009, 43 in music and 31 in music education. For number of majors since 1999, see Appendix A. In 2009, 11 students were declared minors in music. For number o minors by class, see Appendix B. Enrollment Data Enrollment data including Faculty SSCH Production / credit hours/ and contact hours for Summer II of 2009, of 2009, Spring of 2010, and Summer I of 2010 are shown below.

Kerry Blakemore -- High School Band Director, McGehee Arkansas. Lydia Ball -- Elementary Music and High School Choir Director, Hamburg, AR. Donald Johnson -- Manager at Cracker Box, Monticello, AR (His wife will graduate with a degree in Music in May They will move to Texas to teach music.) Janay Kolen -- Instructor of Music at the Arkansas Baptist College, Little Rock, AR John Kloap -- Assistant Band Director, Hooks, Texas. Kelli Stevens -- Jr High Band Director, Rison, Arkansas. Accomplishments Sponsored the following recitals / productions: $ Six Guest Artists Recitals; $ Seven Concerts; $ Four General Student Recitals; $ Six Senior Recitals $ Spring Musical-- Pirates of Penzance $ Musical-- The Old Maid and the Thief and Sunday Excursion
4 Page 4 Purchased some new office furniture and framed historical documents for permanent display; Purchased equipment including: $ Band instruments $ New software for lab $ New computers for secretary and two faculty The Concert Choir and Chamber Choir $ Presented two concerts on campus; $ Performed Messiah in Little Rock with the Arkansas Choral Society and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra; $ Performed for the Elementary Honors Chorus; $ Performed at Parent/Family Appreciation Day; $ Performed works by Buxtehude, Mozart, and Haydn in Little Rock with members of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra; $ Performed two concerts at the Knoxville Opera Rossini Festival in Knoxville, TN. Music Theater Workshop $ Spring Musical- Pirates of Penzance $ Musical- The Old Maid and the Thief and Sunday Excursion The Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band Marched at five home football games; Marched at one exhibitions; Marched in two local parades and the Parade of Champions prior to five home football games; Presented five concerts on campus; Presented two concerts on Choir Tour; Jazz Band performed at Alumni Dinner, Homecoming week; Choir performed at Parent-Family Appreciation Day; Pep Band performed at 11 basketball games (including women and men s games); Jazz Band I competed in one competition: Northeast Louisiana Jazz Festival Music Student Accomplishments Nine UAM Music students were recipients of Foundation Fund Endowed Music Scholarships; One music major was inducted into Who s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Seven Music students were selected to perform in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Band; A music student received the Janice A. Taylor Music Award for Excellence in Music; Three students were inducted into the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society in 2009; Six students were inducted into the Iota Alpha Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda, National Music Society.
5 Page 5 Facilities The Division of Music holds rehearsals and classes and provides practice rooms in The Music Building and in the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Building. Both buildings include faculty offices and practice rooms, as well as storage space for instruments. The Music Building includes Harris Recital Hall. The VPA building includes the band hall and the choir rehearsal area. The main office for the division is in the Music Building. Music libraries are housed in the university library and in the band hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Building. The Music Building is in need of renovation. Priorities are central air and heat, new seats and carpet in the recital hall, and access for individuals with physical disabilities. SWOT Analysis Strengths Weaknesses 1. Accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM); 2. Excellent curricular programs; 3. Talented, dedicated, and highly motivated faculty committed to Division and UAM mission; 4. Active student body including many with strong musical and academic talents; 5. Strong choral and instrumental ensembles demonstrating steady artistic growth; 6. Excellent scholarship opportunities for students; 7. Alumni who have distinguished themselves in both graduate studies and professional roles; 8. Expanding program which serves the needs of the geographical area. 1. Shortage of full-time faculty; 2. Lack of state-of-the-art recording equipment in performance areas and studios; 3. Lack of adequate audio equipment in Harris Recital Hall; 4. Need to increase faculty training in Distance Education; 5. Lack of a fire escape on the second and third floors of the Music Building; 6. Inadequate funding for student workers; 7. Lack of availability of Smart classrooms in the Music Building and the band and choral areas in the Visual and Performing Arts Building.
6 Page 6 Opportunities 1. Recruit more actively in the community/junior colleges of Arkansas and surrounding states for talented students; 2. Create additional office, studio and storage space by renovating the unfinished third floor of the Music Building; Threats 3. Add new performance opportunities for UAM music faculty and students to increase state wide visibility; 4. Encourage the private sector to endow music scholarships and contribute to the AFriends of Music@ Fund. 1. Budgetary constraints; 2. Abundant scholarship offers to high school musicians by other area universities and those in surrounding states; 3. Distance education opportunities offered in music by other universities. 4. Overburdened faculty, inadequate number of full-time faculty. 5. Limited time and opportunities to recruit.
