Ron Triano s Q200 Rebuild Project When I purchased this Q200, it had about 225 hours on it already, and it was taken apart for rebuild. I really didn't think there would be too much work to rebuild it and get it flying again. (boy, was I wrong). To contact me: rondefly@rtriano.com! "#"$!!$! "! "!%& %' '$! ( %")!'! *+,+#
+,- +%..% % "/"! The Poly Fibre UV Smooth Prime has been good to me, Being waterborne is nice to work with and works well with the Aeropoxy products. I like the built in UV protection. I have been rolling it on with a smooth roller, I am ready to graduate to 180 grit and on up on the top. I also want to finish the interior visible areas as I did on the dragonfly. You can see from the picture above the interior really needs something. I am looking for some nice chrome inserts to fit the top straps for the seat belts. Think that would be a nice touch.
On the cowling I also made some mods or repairs, whatever sounds nice. For the carb inlet I put a 2" carbon fibre tube in and floxed around it to the weard hole that was there. It wasn't round or any other symmetrical shape and looked terrible. Now I can put a remove before flight plug right in there. Also the cylinder air inlets were not per the shape in the plans, you know, the 3/4" they call out from the split line on the top. -l maybe part of them might have touched three quarter inches but they were not parallel with the split line. Those kind of things really bother me. They are right size now, though. I think it is going to be more fun when I can start to bolt things back on, along with the complete re-wiring job. Here are a few pictures of the 0-200, It has very low time since remanufactured. Hope it is not like the rest of the items I purchased, maybe it will just run and be nice. Also you can see where I have repaired the canopy edge.
Here you can see where I silver soldered schrader valves on the old gas struts, filled them up with a bicycle Co2 pump, this was a great idea from the Dfly bunch, Allan and Richard. Be sure they are pointing down to keep the seal lubricated. I will be putting the 2nd fuel pump in as a backup. 08/22/03 I just added a photo of the caster/camber adjustment parts. The two on the left are my patterns made from melamine. On the right is one of the carbon fibre parts. I tried to take a picture of the faston board tabs which I got from DigiKey. I found a piece of brass at a local Radiator shop and now can make my ground terminals. Here it is on the mount I have fixed to the motor mounts. On rollers it is great to get around, especially with the 182 in the hangar. The top side is about ready for paint so I am finishing up the bottom. Getting ready to finish up the glass on the bottom of the canard. The wheels and brakes are installed, I am making a special tool to install the brake pads. Looks like nothing will stick out in the airstream.
Even though the fuselage is standing on its nose I took a picture 90 deg. to see the wheel and brake better, Next step I will lay it back down on its back to glass the underside of the canard. Right after paint I plan to weigh the bare airframe with just the controls and wheels on. I have been spending plenty time just getting all the edges right I am starting some more construction projects so won't be working on this except on every other weekend. 10/23/03. Well it is 11/1/03 and I came home in the snow to work in the Q. I am sanding and filling all the detail work, also installed the sparrow strainers, I made the mounts on the sides 1" longer per Al Kittleson's suggestion to get it into the airstream a bit more. Here are 3 picts of the strainers, in place and strong. As you can see I am still working on the fillets and the underside of the canard. More tomorrow. 11/8/03, Well it's the weekend again and I got to do some more on the Q. Did get the cockpit painted with Zolatone, Had none left over to do behind the seat area, so I ordered another quart and will do that area next time. Also turned the whole thing over and now can do the items on the bottom much easier. How about these weird photos? That is Dave, My Son, the painter today. More tomorrow.
This week, 11/15/03, I am working on finishing the bottom of the canard, Did the prep and floxed and glassed. Also did the inside of the wheel pants. If all dries ok tomorrow I can start to finish the bottom of the canard. Here are a few pictures. It has warmed up some now that it is overcast. Still need to keep the hangar warm. Sunday PM I am off to Richfield, UTAH. "$/0/' +%1 2+%1 "$"/3
12/26/03 Now I have the whole bottom up to 220 grit. It is really getting smooth, I am detailing the gaps at the ailerons, elevators, and rudder. Sure took plenty of time to do the fillet at the bottom of the canard across the fuselage. I still have the whole top to get to this stage, (220 grit) Then I will put the Q on its nose so I can get it ready for the painting. 01/10/04 Today my son did the finish spraying of the Zolatone on the interior exposed parts. I have started to install the wheel axles in their proper places, and prior to paint I want to get the outside wheel alignment parts installed. Dave helped me put the project back on its nose stand. (That has been a great help for access to every part). While the weather is too cold it is a great time to do the fine detailing on the gaps between the ailerons and elevators, that is such a pain to get it all even. It takes plenty time to get all the radius flowing even also. The other pain project is getting the spacing the same around the Cleveland brake cylinders. The way mine worked out, the brake lines wound up on the inside of the wheel pant which is great,(keeps them out of the air flow). 1/19/2004 Well, last Saturday we sprayed the last coat of smooth prime on the entire aircraft, I then sprayed some guide coat on prior to the final sanding to see if there were any low areas I missed. (This is a lot of work). You can see the Zolatone in the exposed areas. The places that still show some traces of the black guide coat are few and I think I can just add more smooth prime to those places. After getting the bottom up to the fine grit I will turn over to the top side and do the same to the top with the guide coat to be all ready for paint. 01/25/2004 This weekend I spent time getting the tail cone sanded, it is now up to the 180 grit. I have a few dimples I found with the guide coat. (that sure works good). The whole bottom of the airframe is up to 220 grit and pretty smooth, will put the wheels on before turning it over to do the top side.
2/10/04 Made much progress lately, the whole bottom is up to 400 Grit and I installed the wheels and turned it over to do the final finish on the top. Here you can see the cleveland's in place along with a tie down ring which I am not sure will stay as it totally sticks out in the air stream. Here you can see the guide coat, (I just used flat black spray paint as you sand it all off). It sure helps you find any low or pin holes easy. View from the rear, I am working on the tail cone in the hangar. It is much easier to get it around with it on its wheels. 2/15/04 Have been putting all the pieces together all week and my son Dave is down to help me with the finer details in prep for paint.
3/26/04, We have been trying out different graphics and think are settled on this one. It really accentuates the compound curves of the Q. Also you can see the tailwheel pant been experimenting with. 4/24/04, How about the engineeered paint booth, the airport would not let me paint in the hangar so this was the next best thing. Actually the only thing as there was not a paint booth on the airport. On the right we are removing the masking tape and after it is well dryed I will flip it over and do the top side. This time we did the whole bottom and the tail cone. Sure is nice to see it all white. Well almost all white. 6/24/04, I have not been able to work on it as much as I like to lately, however here are some shots of the plugs I am making for the wing tips, they will have both the strobe and nav LED lights in them. nothing sticking out for drag. Those are the LED's I made. they are very bright.
