2 INTRODUCTION Cape Corsair was built in Cape Town South Africa in 1961 at the famous yard of Louw & Halverson from a design submitted by the renowned international yacht designer Kurt A. H. Oehlmann of Lubeck Germany. Oehlmann s classic designs of timber framed vessels are much desired. With only two owners since new, she has been lovingly cared for by both stewards. Her original owner requested that she be able to withstand the rigors of the Cape waters and capable of 9 knots under sail or power. Her first trip from Cape Town was April 1964 when she sailed to the Mediterranean via St. Helena, Ascension, Cape Verde, Canaries and Gibraltar. The 5,850 mile journey took 35 days at sea at an average speed of 7 knots averaging 167 miles per day. She is a classic 18 metre, 35 tonne wooden ketch of 5 metres in beam. She is cutter rigged with roller furling Genoa and inner foresail, a slab reefed main and mizzen; together with a mizzen staysail to compliment her down wind sailing ability. She can cross the Atlantic with no problem as the fuel should provide about 2,500 nautical miles cruising on engine alone and the wind is certain to fill her sails for at least another 500 miles. MAIN SALON The main salon is expansive at 5 metres by 4 metres and is heated by an Eberspacher diesel powered heater with 3 kilowatts of heat; fully rebuilt in Dining and the navigation station are located in the salon area. Main Salon Steps to Cockpit Fish Detail GALLEY Food refrigeration is supplied by a Penguin Engineering System comprised of a large deep freezer and refrigerator also overhauled in A Taylor four burner gimbaled stainless steel stove with grill and oven is also fitted in the galley. A Hotpoint 750 watt microwave oven is installed. The Watermaker supplies some 90 litres per hour. Galley

4 GUEST STATEROOMS CONTINUED Crew Berths Head Washing Machine DECK The decks are 25mm thick teak glued and screwed to 19mm thick marine ply onto oak cross members and deck beams using thousands of silicon bronze screws in her construction. The main mast is 60 feet high made by Z Spars and fitted by Rigging Solutions of Dartmouth. The mizzen mast is 40 feet high also by Z Spars. Both masts are a flat sided elliptical shape, fitted in 2010 of modern aluminum with matching aluminum booms. Lazy jacks are fitted to ease sail handling and the simple slab reefing system is easy to use. Her hull is made from double planked Nigerian mahogany some 38mm total thickness running fore & aft, with the seams staggered. With caulking at the garboards only, she has never taken on any water. The wooden keel is shaped out of a 3 foot wide piece of oak and the 11 tonne lead keel is bolted through. The hull was spray painted using the highest quality AWLGRIP and then coated with COELAN, a transparent and lasting sealer from Germany. 6 ELECTRONICS & HELM The core navigation and communication system was totally replaced in 2010 and instrumentation upgraded at the helm and navigators station. The steering system is by Teleflex and was fitted in Entertainment consists of CD player & radio w/ high power speakers in the salon and wheelhouse. There is a digital TV booster aerial fitted to the mizzen mast. There is a digital LCD TV starboard to in the salon on a storable swing bracket. One 12 volt bank comprised of four 110 amp hour 12 volt batteries in series is charged by a 20 amp hour Cetrek charger and also a Bosch 12 volt alternator also powered separately by the Cat engine. 7 ENGINE DETAILS & MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT Caterpillar D320B 4 cylinder diesel engine. 70 rpm to a maximum of 1500 rpm. Exhaust system is a 5 inch diameter Halyard wet silenced system. The propeller and gear box are made by Slack & Parr of Oldham. The propeller is a variable pitch type of 1 metre diameter 3 blade phosphor bronze. The gearbox provides a 2:1 reduction from the engine. The auxiliary generator is an Onan 6 KVA diesel model providing A/C power of Hz. Overhauled in 2008, it is water cooled and very quiet. It also supplies the 24V and 12V system charging facilities. Shore power supplied in addition by means of a cross over switch. Simpson Lawrence hydraulic anchor windlass. Avon 10 foot dinghy mounted in Simpson stainless steel davits on the stern propelled by15hp Mercury outboard. Cat Engine Propeller BROKER S COMMENTS This amazing ketch has sailed around the world twice and has cruised the Mediterranean extensively. Her logs & papers are littered with references to exotic places. She sailed out in 1968 from Cape Town to rescue a captain who had capsized during the Galway Blazer race and towed the vessel 200 miles back to Cape Town. She is exceptionally fast due to the long and heavy keel which takes heavy sea conditions in stride. Constantly maintained and improved, she is capable of long passages away from land in comfort with the constant on board water & power supply.
