1 Dabao (D) & Xiaobao (X) Concert Hints for the Translator (T) Hello! Welcome and thank you for cooperating with us and giving your best for a successful concert. Since the role of the translator/moderator is a very important one, we have collected some specific song hints as well as some general information for you. All announcements in quotation marks below shall be translated by you on stage as literally as possible. Don t hesitate to ask us if you have any doubt. Thank you! Setlist: Your tasks and translations are printed cursively, background hints are printed normally 1. Chattanooga Choo Choo No translation service. 2. All Keys Boogie D & X say some Chinese welcome words. T lets the audience charmingly guess who is who, D reveals the secret speaking Chinese, X introduces next song: Coming up now a Boogie Woogie that is written in all keys! C major, D major, E, F, G etc. Whenever we change place the key changes too. X is counting to four. D starts to play. 3. He s A Pirate No translation service. Please don t go on stage. 4. For Elise No translation service. Please don t go on stage. 5. Germany-China-Song X explains: The next song is actually made of two songs. Firstly I will start with the famous Kinderscenen` written by the German composer Schumann. By the way Schumann was born nearby Leipzig where this beautiful Blüthner grand piano was manufactured. The second melody is a very popular Chinese folk song and will be played by Dabao. I don t say it s title now because you will recognize it easily anyway. And then we play the two songs together at the same time. And you will see this is a very good musical example how Germany and China can go together in perfect harmony. De guo - zhong guo - bao bao. Don t mention the title of the Chinese folk song. The spectators will recognize it themselves. 6. The Piano-Medley X will show the audience a picture of the German composer Schumann, which suddenly becomes Chinese. Nothing to be translated. D or X: The next song is a film music medley from the movie THE PIANO. The plot in short: An English woman emigrates by ship in the middle of the 19 th century to New Zealand carrying along her beloved grand piano. Probably a Blüthner grand piano! But tragically it must be left behind on sea shore because it is too heavy for transport over land. A real romantic melodrama! We will show you some scenes now on the screen(s) and bring to you the best of the film music. 7. Liang Zhi Lao Hu X: Now we play the popular tune of LIANG ZHI LAO HU. Since it is so easy I would like to play it in a crazy way namely backwards. Please use 倒 着 弹 = dao zhe tan as translation for backwards because it has two meanings. The audience should think X is playing it from the end to the start. Instead he will just turn his back to the piano and play it from the beginning. After the applause D takes over: Now I would like to play for you Liang Zhi Lao Hu in the style of old classical composers. If you know one please raise your hand. D collects a bunch of composers by
2 asking some spectators personally with the mike in the audience. Please stay on stage and help D by repeating the just named composer. If only few people raise their hands please encourage them to do so. D continues: Since we cannot take all composers for lack of time, I ll choose just really typical ones. Firstly Mozart. Mozart was a child genius so his music turns out to be childish, kiddy and mostly in major. D and X play and go on: Secondly we ll take a good contrast: Beethoven. Beethoven was an old and sad man with rather melancholy music in minor. D & X play. D: Our third and last example will be Bach. D & X play. Then X takes over: As an experiment I would now try to bring back to life the old classical Chinese composer Li Xiao Long and let him also play Liang Zhi Lao Hu! After he did so X continues: Now finally let s have another version of Liang Zhi Lao Hu: The Chinese choir version. We do some KTV now! I want the whole audience to sing along! D plays, X animates the audience. 8. Czardas No translation service. Please don t go on stage. 9. Carmen X: The grand piano is such a versatile instrument that as next song we will try to perform some opera music on it. Coming up now the specially arranged overture from world famous CARMEN. The opera Carmen is all about love and bullfight. Please enjoy. 10. Center Court Blues In case some kids might gather round the stage to catch the tennis balls after the song T instructs them to remain seated. In case the concert organizer has planned that kids hand over some flowers to D & X the perfect moment would be: AFTER having thrown all FOUR (!) tennis balls but BEFORE starting the flight of the bumble bee. 11. Flight Of The Bumble Bee D: As tonight s last song - so far we have prepared one of the fastest pieces ever written for piano. A piece from the Russian composer Rimskii-Korsakoff: the flight of the bumble bee. It s important that the audience knows that this song marks the actual end of the concert. If they wanted encores they will have to applaude for them from now on. Make that clear please! 12. Fast Encore: Show-Medley D & X clear the stage. T goes on stage immediately and animates or rather stimulates the audience to applaud massively for an encore. He must inform the audience that D & X-CDs will be on sale after the show. There is a special offer only today: 1 for 150 RMB - 2 for 250 RMB 3 for 300 RMB. D & X will be pleased to sign them and have a photo with you. This concert here is towards the end of D & X s China tour of this year. So the number of CDs is limited so if you are interested, make sure you are quick enough to get one. Then D & X come back at T s sign and say: And just as we have a slow and a fast CD, we have also a slow and a fast encore. I would like you to vote now by raising you hand. Who is in favour of the slow encore? Please raise your hand now! Thank you, and now for the fast encore? OK, thank you. Anybody that would like to have no encore at all? D raises his hand. Hahaha! OK, good choice, here is our fast encore: a show medley featuring various show tunes. 13. Slow Encore: Pop-Medley D & X clear the stage. T goes on stage immediately and animates or rather stimulates the audience to applaud massively for another encore. Then D & X come back at T s sign. X: Thank you everybody for coming here. You were a wonderful kind of audience. We would really like to shake hands or take a photo with you right after the show. We apologize that autographs are only possible on CDs for lack of time. And just as the flight of the bumble bee for example is on the fast CD, the next song our very last encore now is on the slow CD. So we ll turn down the lights on stage a little to make it more romantic. See you soon
