2 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Biology 1.2A for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: Low Excellence In addition to the requirements for Merit, at Excellence, the standard requires students to report comprehensively on a biological issue. This involves identifying multiple links between biological ideas, evaluating sources of information and making a recommendation for action (EN 4). The report makes some links between biological ideas (see 1 and 2), briefly evaluates sources (see 3 and 4) and makes a recommendation for action (see 5). The report therefore satisfies the requirements for E. It is at the lower end of E because the multiple links made between the biological ideas are minimal with more explanation (as required for M) than multiple links, and the evaluation of sources is brief. The report would have been strengthened by increased links between biological ideas related to the question (EN 4, bp 2) and an increased level of explanation associated with the evaluation of sources (EN 4, bp 4). 4 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Biology 1.2A for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: High Merit This report meets the requirements for Merit because it explains biological ideas (EN 3, bp 2) particularly in relation to the requirement for new vaccines as a result of virus mutation (see 6 and 7); it identifies at least 2 different points of view supported by evidence (EN 3, bp 4) (see 8, 9 and 10) and the author takes and justifies a position on the issue (see 11, 12 and 13). The report is at the upper end of M because it provides some evidence of multiple links between the biological ideas (see 1 and 2) and attempts to evaluate 2 sources (see 14 and 15), both of which are requirements for E (EN 4, bp 2 and bp 4). It is at the lower end of M because in addition to meeting the requirements for A it also provides some evidence required for M eg evidence of explanation of biological ideas (EN 3, bp 2) (see 19 and 20), provides two different points of view (see 21 and 22) and some justification of their own position on the issue (see 19). However, the explanation and the supporting evidence for the viewpoints (EN 3, bp 4) are weak placing it overall at the lower end of M. Crown 2010

11 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Biology 1.2A for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: High Achieved This report is at the upper end of A because it clearly meets the requirements for A (EN 2) and provides some evidence of the additional aspects required for M ie explaining biological ideas related to the question (EN 3, bp 2) The report is mainly description but provides some evidence of weak explanation eg of the biology of the swine flu virus (see 23 on the report), why the NZ government will be more prepared for future outbreaks (see 24) and why the NZ public may be more likely to receive the vaccine in the future (see 25). The report also justifies the author s position on the issue (EN, 3, bp 5, see 27), another requirement for M. The weakest aspect of the report in terms of what is required for M, is identifying at least two different viewpoints supported by evidence. This report clearly identifies only one viewpoint (see 26). Because of the weak explanations and only one viewpoint clearly identified, the report provides insufficient evidence for M, but adds sufficient strength to it for it to be at the upper end of A. The biology is weak, placing the report overall at the lower end of A. Crown 2010

However the author s position on the issue (EN 2, bp 4) is weak (see 35). Overall therefore the report is not sufficient for A but because it provides some of the required evidence, is at the upper end of N. Crown 2010
