ENTSO-E 41 TSOs from 34 countries are members of ENTSO-E ENTSO-E was established and given legal mandates by the EU s Third Legislative Package for the Internal Energy Market in 2009 ENTSO-E contributes to the achievement of these objectives mainly through: the drafting of network codes the development of pan-european network plans (TYNDPs) the technical cooperation between TSOs the publication of summer and winter outlook reports for electricity generation the coordination of R&D plans 2

Integrated Roadmap (EC) The aim of the Integrated Roadmap, in the current context of the EU's energy policy developments, is to consolidate the updated technology roadmaps of the SET Plan and propose research and innovation actions designed to facilitate integration along four axes: the innovation chain, covering from basic research to demonstration and support for market roll-out; the value chain, according to the industrial capacities and innovation potential of the various supply chains; the EU dimension, achieving replication of solutions in different climate and geographic contexts across Europe; and the energy system, fulfilling the societal needs in a competitive, secure, efficient, and sustainable way. 6

e-highway2050 e-highway2050 aims at developing a new planning methodology able to deliver a coherent Modular Development Plans of the pan-european power transmission system, going up to Development of a methodology to support the planning of the pan- European transmission network up to 2050 In line with the European energy policy objectives to ensure the reliable delivery of renewable electricity and the pan-european electricity market integration The resulting modular development plan (to be delivered by the end of 2015) will depict the route towards different pan-european grid architectures, addressing each of the five future power system scenarios which impact the pan-european transmission network most. For more information: 8

Garpur Seven TSOs (Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Iceland, Norway), together with twelve RTD performers and one innovation management expert work with the 4-year GARPUR research project in order to design, develop, assess and evaluate new system reliability criteria and management to be progressively implemented over the next decades at a pan-european level, while maximising social welfare. For more information: 9

evovldso evolvdso addresses the main research and technology gaps that need to be solved for DSOs to efficiently fulfil their emerging and future roles in the European electricity system DSOs need to implement active distribution system management and market neutral approaches to face current challenges which require the adaptation of current roles and creation of new ones To this regard, the Project identified eight (evolving or new) potential DSO roles to improve existing core DSO activities and the associated services DSOs should deliver to other parties of the electric power system. For more information: 10

Best Paths The project BEST PATH objective is to prove the technical feasibility of novel power engineering technologies and to quantify the impacts and benefits to overcome the intrinsic development/deployment risk, bringing affordable technological solutions before 2020 to address the following overarching issues: What are the best paths to move from HVDC lines to HVDC grids? What are the new promising upgrading techniques for existing AC network? How replicable are the demonstration results within the entire pan-european system? For more information: 11

Era-Net Smart Grid Plus ERA-Net Smart Grids Plus is an initiative of 21 European countries and regions. Our aim is to enable the right technologies, market designs and customer adoption in order to achieve the Smart Grids vision and goals of Europe: an electric power system integrating renewable energies and flexible consumer and production technologies that can help shape an electricity grid with a high security of supply, coupled with low greenhouse gas emissions, at an affordable price. 12

EcoGrid EU A Prototype for European Smart Grids

EcoGrid EU in Brief EU funded FP7-Energy project (total budget: 21 million ) A large scale demonstration of a real-time market place for distributed energy resources (DER) ICT systems and innovative market solutions enable small-scale consumers to offer TSOs additional and more efficient balancing services A demonstration in a real power system with more than 50 % renewable energy Preparation for a fast-track towards European real-time market operation of renewable energy sources and demand response 14

15 15

Why a Real-time Market? An efficient way to meet the future challenge of balancing High(er) demand for flexible consumption/production High(er) volatility High(er) balancing cost An efficient instrument to wide spread adoption of small-scale end-users/ prosumers in the power market(s) Increasing competition in the power market(s) Small scale end-users can attain economic benefits TSOs get access to alternative balancing resources Design of an EcoGrid prototype real-time market place is a realistic approach because it is `just widening the scope of The existing power market systems 16

The Scope of the EcoGrid Real-time Market EcoGrid is an example of a real-time market that can be implemented in the context of existing power market(s. EcoGrid supports the need for direct control options on a very short time scale 17

2000 Participating Customers in the Demonstration Statistic Control 200 households with smart meters No access to specific information Manual Control 500 households with smart meters Receiving simple market price information Must move their energy consumption on their own Automatic Control 700 automated households with IBM-Green Wave Reality equipment and smart meters All houses have heat pumps or electric heating responding autonomously to price signals Aggregated automatic Control 500 automated households with Siemens equipment and smart meters All houses have heat pumps or electric heating responding to control signals Smart Businesses Up to 100 costumers with smart meters Including small business and public customers Connected smart appliances responding to control signals 18

Preliminary Conclusions on EcoGrid A new real time market concept has been developed and tested Approximately 2000 pilot customers participated in the test Insignificant demand response from manual customers Significant demand response from automated customers Prerequisites for commercial deployment Sustainable business models for DR-aggregators More flexible consumption as heat pumps and electrical vehicles Cheaper plug & play and DR-ready ICT systems The final results will be ready by middle of September
