1. Is this a new requirement? No, this ICD-10 CEU requirement was first announced by CCHIIM in January 2011, and was extended due to the delay of the ICD-10 implementation. Notifications were sent to credential holders each time ICD-10 was delayed along with the new ICD-10 CEU reporting deadline. The goal of the policy is to ensure that those carrying coding related AHIMA credentials based on ICD-9 have received training in ICD-10. If you have already earned and reported the required number of ICD-10 CEUs at any time after January 2011, you have met the requirements of the policy.

2. Who is required to record ICD-10 specific CEUs and what is the deadline for recording? EXTENSION UPDATE: The Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) has approved an extension of the deadline to earn and record ICD-10 CEUs. The new deadline to earn and record the required number of ICD-10 CEUs for RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, and CHPS holders is March 31, As the original policy requires, affected credential(s) will be placed in inactive status (see answer to Question 18) following the original deadline - December 31, 2015 or January 31, 2016*. During the inactive period, individuals may earn and record additional ICD-10 CEUs in order to satisfy the requirement. Once your required number of ICD-10 CEUs has been recorded in the AHIMA CEU Center and/or the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool, your affected credential(s) will reactivate with no monetary fee attached. Please see question 4 for further details. Individuals who received one or more of the credentials listed below by taking exam(s) prior to the ICD-10 exam implementation dates below are required to report their ICD-10 CEUs by the deadline date. You only need to meet the CEU requirements once so if you have already reported sufficient ICD-10 CEUs anytime from January 2011 to now you have met the requirement. CREDENTIAL ICD-10 EXAM IMPLEMENTATION DATE # OF REQUIRED ICD-10 CEUS* RHIT October 9, DEADLINE FOR RECORDING** RHIA October 16, CCS October 5, CCA October 12, CCS-P October 19, March 31, 2016 CHPS N/A 1 CDIP February CHDA February May 31, 2016 *Individuals who obtained their first AHIMA credential between January 1, 2015, and the last date of ICD-9 exam administration will not be able to access their CEU Center until January 1, The original deadline date for these individuals to record ICD-10 CEUs was January 31, With the extension, ICD- 10 CEUs must be earned and recorded by March 31, 2016

3. Where should I record my ICD-10 CEUs? ICD-10 CEUs should be recorded in your AHIMA CEU Center if the CEUs were earned within your current recertification cycle dates. ICD-10 CEUs recorded in the CEU Center need only to be recorded by the deadline date to satisfy the requirement; they do not need to be reported until the end of your recertification cycle after all of your core recertification CEUs have been earned and recorded as well. If the CEUs were earned outside of your current recertification cycle dates, the ICD-10 CEUs should be recorded in the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool and keep your CEU documentation for your records. Once submitted, AHIMA receives these CEU records in a report. Please be aware these CEUs will not be documented in your CEU Center or any other public forum where you will be able to view them again after submission.

4. Can I get an extension? The Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) has approved an extension of the deadline to earn and record ICD-10 CEUs. The new deadline to earn and record the required number of ICD-10 CEUs for RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, and CHPS holders is March 31, Affected credential(s) will still become inactive (see answer to Question 18) following the original deadline - December 31, 2015* or January 31, 2016**. Once your required number of ICD-10 CEUs has been recorded in the AHIMA CEU Center and/or the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool, your affected credential(s) will automatically reactivate with no monetary fee attached. If ICD-10 CEUs still have not been recorded into your AHIMA CEU Center and/or the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool by March 31, 2016, your affected credential(s) will become revoked as of April 1, Please see question 19 for the reactivation process if revoked. *All RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, and CHPS holders who earned their credential prior to 2015 have an original deadline date of December 31, 2015 **All RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, and CHPS holders who earned their first credential in 2015 and tested in ICD-9 have an original deadline date of January 31, 2016 For CDIP and CHDA holders: CDIP and CHDA holders still have until May 31, 2016 to earn and record ICD-10 CEUs. There is no extension for these credential holders. If the required number of ICD-10 CEUs is not recorded in the AHIMA CEU Center and/or ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool by May 31, 2016, your affected credential(s) will become revoked as of June 1, 2016.

5. I just earned my AHIMA credential this year; do I still have to meet this requirement? Yes, any individual who has earned an AHIMA credential and took the exam for that credential in the ICD-9 version must meet the ICD-10 CEU requirements for their credential to remain in good standing. B e c a u s e you will not be able to enter your CEUs into the CEU Center until January 1, 2016, your original deadline date to record them was January 31, Per the extension (see question 4), your credentials(s) will become inactive on February 1, 2016 and the new deadline for earning and recording your ICD-10 CEUs is March 31, For ICD-10 CEUs earned prior to your current recertification cycle, please record them into the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool and keep your CEU documentation for your records. Once submitted in the recording tool, AHIMA receives these CEU records in a report. Please be aware these CEUs will not be documented in your CEU Center or any other public forum where you will be able to view them again after submission.

6. What are considered acceptable ICD-10 CEUs that can be recorded? Any CEUs covering ICD-10 topics that meet the requirement set forth in the CCHIIM Recertification Guide are acceptable and can be recorded, whether or not the program was hosted by AHIMA. There is one change to the CEU reporting requirements that specifically relates to reporting ICD-10 CEUs. The change is that any ICD-10 CEUs obtained after January 1, 2011 may be reported, including CEUs obtained prior to receiving your credential. This change was approved by CCHIIM earlier this year in order to make it easier for you to comply with the ICD-10 CEU requirement while still maintaining the intent behind the policy. You can record ICD-10 CEUs earned from other providers, including the following: Educational portions of programs of allied health and other relevant professional associations Educational portions of programs sponsored by organizations or vendors Telecommunications and teleseminars relevant to the HIIM profession ICD-10 courses or training received while earning an HIM degree In-house training programs Providing presentations or publishing articles College credits If you still need to obtain ICD-10 CEUs, you can also refer to the extensive number of AHIMA products and services below which can be purchased at the AHIMA store (see next page):

7. I attended the AHIMA ICD-10 Training Academy in 2009, are these still acceptable CEUs for meeting the requirement? Yes, when the policy was first issued by CCHIIM in 2011, it was stated that CEUs from AHIMA ICD-10 Training Academy s held prior to 2011 would be accepted for meeting the ICD-10 CEU requirement. The ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer Academy provides 34 CEUs and the ICD-10-CM Trainer Academy provides 18 CEUs. If you have attended an AHIMA ICD-10 Trainer Academy in the past and do not have those CEUs recorded in your AHIMA CEU Center, please record them in the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool so that we have them on record as counting towards your ICD-10 CEU Requirement. Once submitted in the recording tool, AHIMA receives these CEU records in a report. Please be aware these CEUs will not be documented in your CEU Center or any other public forum where you will be able to view them again after submission.

8. Can I count the Coding Self-Reviews I have taken an annual requirement for my CCA, CCS, or CCS-P credential(s)? Past annual coding self-reviews required to maintain certification do not count as ICD-10 CEUs since they were based on ICD-9. The 2015 coding self reviews are based on ICD-10 so these self-reviews (if completed by March 31, 2016) will help contribute to meeting your ICD-10 CEUs. The self-reviews are assigned 5 CEUs and are only available to those holding the CCA, CCS or CCS-P certifications.

9. What if I reported my ICD-10 CEUs in a past recertification cycle? The ICD-10 CEU requirement is a one-time occurrence due to the implementation of ICD-10. If you have reported your designated ICD-10 CEUs in a past cycle then you have satisfied the ICD- 10 CEU requirement and your credential will remain in good standing. To view past CEUs which you have reported online, log into your CEU Center and go to the CEU Completion History tab. Select the dates of the time period you wish to view and all CEUs which you have reported online during that time period will appear. All ICD-10 CEUs recorded from January 1, 2011 to present count towards the ICD-10 CEU requirement. If you have reported your ICD-10 CEUs under a different domain they will still count towards your ICD-10 CEU requirement if they contain ICD-10 in the title. If you would like to ensure your ICD-10 CEUs that are not recorded in the CEU Center under the ICD-10 domain are counting towards your requirement total, you can also enter those CEU programs in the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool which will indicate to AHIMA that it is an ICD-10 program. Once submitted in the recording tool, AHIMA receives these CEU records in a report. Please be aware these CEUs will not be documented in your CEU Center or any other public forum where you will be able to view them again after submission.

10. Is there a way to change the domain to ICD-10 for past CEUs recorded under a different domain? If the CEUs have already been entered and saved in the AHIMA CEU Center, currently there is not a way to update the CEU domain; however they will still count towards your ICD-10 CEU requirement if they contain ICD-10 in the title.

11. What do I do if my CEU Center is not allowing me to record my ICD-10 CEUs? There are two potential reasons why you cannot enter data: 1. You received your first credential sometime in 2015 so you do have not access to the CEU Center until January 1, You have already reported CEUs for your current recertification cycle. Unfortunately, the system will not allow you to enter additional CEUs for the cycle. In both instances, you can instead use the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool to record your ICD-10 CEU information. Once submitted in the recording tool, AHIMA receives these CEU records in a report. Please be aware these CEUs will not be documented in your CEU Center or any other public forum where you will be able to view them again after submission.

12. What happens if I do not earn the required ICD-10 CEUs by the deadline date? EXTENSION UPDATE: The Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) has approved an extension of the deadline to earn and record ICD-10 CEUs. The new deadline to earn and record the required number of ICD-10 CEUs for RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, and CHPS holders is March 31, As the original policy requires, affected credential(s) will be placed in inactive status (see answer to Question 18) following the original deadline - December 31, 2015* or January 31, 2016**. If ICD-10 CEUs still have not been recorded into your AHIMA CEU Center and/or the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool by March 31, 2016, your affected credential(s) will become revoked as of April 1, Please see question 19 for the reactivation process if revoked. *All RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, and CHPS holders who earned their credential prior to 2015 have an original deadline date of December 31, 2015 **All RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, and CHPS holders who earned their first credential in 2015 and tested in ICD-9 have an original deadline date of January 31, 2016

13. Can ICD-10 classes I took in college count towards my ICD-10 CEU requirement? HIIM classes covering ICD-10 can count towards your ICD-10 CEU requirement. The CCHIIM Recertification Guidelines for reporting these types of CEUs are as follows: Post-secondary courses attended for credit, including guided independent study and regular college or university courses. Courses taken in pursuit of HIIM professionrelevant associate, baccalaureate, master, or doctorate degrees are included. Fifteen (15) CEUs for each semester/trimester credit; ten (10) CEUs for each quarter credit Completion of courses as part of the HITECH education programs (non-degree) created to educate health IT professionals who can facilitate the implementation and support of an electronic healthcare system. Twenty (20) CEUs per completion of a workforce role. Audit of academic course or relevant non-credit adult education course, including attendance at a college or university course with permission and following regulations, without completing necessary requirements for full formal credit. Course must be completed by the December 31 recertification cycle end date six (6) CEUs for each semester/trimester credit; four (4) CEUs for each quarter credit Correspondence and other formal, independent, online, or distance education study programs accredited by the National Home Study Council or prior-approved by AHIMA, which consist of readings and exercises submitted to a knowledgeable instructor for evaluation. Courses normally cover several lessons to be completed in a specific time period. (CEUs must be determined on an individual basis by CCHIIM.)

14. I have already reported my ICD-10 CEUs; do I need to report them again for this cycle? No, if you have already reported the designated number of required ICD-10 CEUs for your credential in a past cycle then you have satisfied this requirement and do not need to do anything further in regards to this policy.

15. What if I have multiple credentials? Do I need to submit the required number of CEUs for each of those credentials? Multiple credential holders must only satisfy the ICD-10 CEU requirement for the credential requiring the largest number of ICD-10 CEUs to be earned to maintain all credentials. For example, if you hold an RHIA and a CCS, you are required to record 18 ICD-10 CEUs by the deadline date. If you satisfy this requirement, both of your credentials will remain in active status. Will all of my AHIMA credentials become inactive and/or revoked if I do not record the required ICD-10 CEUs by the deadline date? The RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CHPS, CDIP, and CHDA have the ability to become inactive and/or revoked due to the ICD-10 CEU Requirement. Individuals must only satisfy the ICD-10 CEU requirement for the credential requiring the largest number of ICD-10 CEUs to be earned to maintain all credentials. If an individual earns a sufficient number of CEUs to satisfy the requirement for a credential requiring fewer ICD-10 CEUs, then that credential will remain active. The same concept is applied to those who hold more than two AHIMA credentials. For example, if you hold an RHIA and a CCSand have recorded 9 ICD-10 CEUs by your original deadline date (either December 31, 2015 or January 31, 2016), your RHIA will remain active because the required number of ICD-10 CEUs for the RHIA is 6;our CCS will become inactive because the required number of ICD-10 CEUs for the CCS is 18. You have until March 31, 2016 to earn and record the additional 9 ICD-10 CEUs needed to ensure that your CCS is not revoked.

16. I am concerned that recording the ICD-10 CEUs now will have a negative impact on my overall renewal cycle? If ICD-10 CEUs have not already been reported in a past cycle, ICD-10 CEUs that you earned in your current cycle must be manually added to your current cycle in the CEU Center by the deadline date, not reported. CEUs should not be reported until you have satisfied the ICD-10 CEU requirement as well as your core CEU requirement for the recertification cycle. For ICD-10 CEUs earned prior to your current recertification cycle, please record them into the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool and keep your CEU documentation for your records. Once submitted in the recording tool, AHIMA receives these CEU records in a report. Please be aware these CEUs will not be documented in your CEU Center or any other public forum where you will be able to view them again after submission.

17. Are the required ICD-10 CEUs in addition to the core number of CEUs that I am required to earn during my recertification cycle? No, the ICD-10 CEUs are not in addition to your core required CEUs. However, if you wish to use your ICD-10 CEUs as part of your core CEU requirement, they would need to be earned during your recertification cycle. If the program dates occurred prior to your current recertification cycle, they cannot count towards your current recertification cycle CEUs and should be recorded in the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool instead of your AHIMA CEU Center. For example, an RHIT holder who is required to record 6 ICD-10 CEUs by the deadline date must record an additional 14 CEUs by the end of their recertification cycle to satisfy their core CEU requirement of 20 CEUs per recertification cycle.

18. What does inactive status mean? Failure to satisfy the ICD-10 CEU Requirement by your original deadline date will result in your affected credential(s) moving into inactive status. This means your credential(s) is currently not in good standing in accordance with AHIMA policies and will not be presented behind your name. Employers who call AHIMA to verify the credential(s) of an inactive individual will be informed that their credential is currently in an inactive status due to failure to satisfy one of the AHIMA requirements within a specified timeframe. The credential(s) is not yet revoked as they still have the opportunity to meet the requirement and reactive their credential. If the individual is a multiple credential holder and still holds a credential that is active, it will be clarified which credential(s) is active and which credential(s) is inactive. After inactivation, once the required number of ICD-10 CEUs has been recorded into the AHIMA CEU Center and/or the ICD-10 CEU Reporting Tool, the affected credential(s) will be switched back to active within five business days. There is no monetary fee associated with reactivation. An confirmation will be sent within five business days to confirm the switch of an inactive credential(s) to active.

19. How can I reinstate my credential after revocation? Individuals whose credentials have been revoked can apply for reinstatement and be returned to active status by completing the Intent to Reinstate Credential application, paying the reinstatement fee of $175, and meeting the requirements for recertification. There are two ways to reinstate on or before December 30, 2016: Option A: Reactivate by CE a. Submit an Application to Reinstate a Credential; b. Pay the $175 reinstatement fee; c. Obtain the required number of ICD-10CEUs and submit all supporting documentation showing completion of activities. ICD-10 CEUs may have been earned any time from 1/1/11-12/30/16 Option B: Reactivate by Exam a. Retake the applicable certification exam (in ICD-10) After December 30, 2016, the only way to be reinstated and returned to active status is to retake the applicable certification exam. An individual whose credential is reinstated will be officially notified by the CCHIIM that recertification requirements have been met. Upon official notification, the individual will be assigned a two-year recertification cycle beginning on January 1 of the year following reinstatement.
