Meals-on-Wheels Volunteer Luncheon (Let s Give Thanks): Thursday, November 15 th : A special lunch at the Vinton Baptist Church for all of our great volunteers. This is our one time of year that we get to serve YOU lunch because normally you are out serving others! Grocery Raffle: At the luncheon we kicked-off our second annual Grocery Raffle to raise funds for the Meals-on-Wheels program. As stewards of this program, we are asking that you all help to sell tickets in the community by asking family, friends, co-workers etc if they would like to purchase a raffle ticket to support Meals-on- Wheels. It is $1 per ticket or $5 for 6 tickets (a deal!). Tickets are on sale until December 31 st and the drawing will be January 4, 2013 (winners do not have to be present)! The prizes Wellness Corner are the following: 1 st prize: $200 grocery gift card to store of your choice 2 nd prize: $150 grocery gift card to store of your choice 3 rd prize: $100 grocery gift card to store of your choice Be A Santa To A Senior: LOA is once again working in cooperation with Home Instead Senior Care to provide gifts to needy/lonely seniors. For the 8 th year, LOA is participating in this project and we hope that we can provide a special Christmas for all our clients that need it. Last year, just in the Roanoke area, 3,000 gifts were distributed to over 1,325 senior adults (over 400 of those were LOA clients). Thanks to all of you who helped with this awesome endeavor last year! I am attaching a flyer provided by Home Instead that lists volun- (Continued on page 4) Schedule in Health Good health calls for a take-charge approach. Follow your healthcare practitioner s recommendations for clinical breast exams, mammograms, and breast self-exams, as well as tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Detecting problems early often allows for more treatment options. Your health is in your hands, so take on the responsibility for yourself and those who love you.

2 Volume 11, Issue 2 What the Recipients Have to Say We just want to thank you for everything you do for my nana and my mom. Also you bring pet food which has allowed nana and mom to keep their cats and dogs fed and in good health. Without your program I really don t know how we would make it. Meals are delicious and I thank the Lord for you and your hard work. I m amazed at how good this meal is and how much it helps me get going for the day. My legs hold out longer when trying to get around. Thanks so much. Page 2 "Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the Earth who reflect this nation s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another. -Erma Bombeck I am enjoying the food. It is really good and your delivery people are so nice. I look forward to seeing them every day. Rewards DRAWING Win a Gift Certificate Through LOA s rewards program for its Meals on Wheels volunteers and in cooperation with area businesses, a drawing will be held each quarter and a gift certificate will be awarded to the winner. Your name will be entered in the drawing every time you deliver a Meals-on-Wheels route during the quarter. The more routes you deliver, the better chance you have to win. So, refer to page 5 for open routes The winners are: Brad Fowler, who volunteers at our Williamson Rd site, receives a gift certificate to Olive Garden. Cathie Cook, who volunteers at SE/Vinton site, receives a gift certificate to Olive Garden. Congratulations to our winners! Thanks to all our volunteers and thanks to these businesses for donating the gift certificates! SUGGESTIONS? Do you have suggestions to help the Meals on Wheels Program work more efficiently? Do you have any concerns about the program? We d love to hear from you! Send them to: Michele Daley LOA Area Agency on Aging PO Box Roanoke, VA Or mdaley@loaa.org

3 Notes More volunteers are needed for this program! Please consider bringing a friend along to take a test drive! And talk to others about your experience as a Meals on Wheels volunteer. Word of mouth is our most successful recruitment tool. New Grant: The LOA has just received a grant that will allow us to do 6 FREE Workshops on Chronic Disease Self-Management this year. Participants will learn a variety of necessary day-to-day management skills needed to maintain and/or increase life s activities in order to live active and fulfilling lives with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, pain, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and others. For more information, please call Alice Duehl at Inclement Weather Procedure for Meals-on- Wheels Deliveries: Rule of Thumb: If Roanoke City Schools are CLOSED, we are PROBABLY not delivering Meals-on-Wheels that day. However, we have delivered meals before when the Roanoke City Schools were closed and we have cancelled delivery when Roanoke City Schools were open. The most important thing to remember is that your area Supervisor will call you IF we are NOT going to serve meals on a snow day. We have to let the kitchen know by 7am if we are cancelling so most staff, are informed by then too. If you don t hear from them regardless of school closings that means we are delivering that day. You can always check in with them before you come if you have not heard from them and are unsure about whether you should come. Beginning in October, we send out one shelfstable bag meal (known as SNOW BAGS) each week until we have a supply of five in each home. When we have to close due to inclement weather, "It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely help another without helping himself. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Page 3 a staff person calls each client to make sure they are okay and to remind them to eat their bag meal. After one day of inclement weather, we always send another SNOW BAG to replenish the one that was used so that they always have five in their home during the winter months. Fundraising: Let s Do Lunch: THANK YOU to every individual and company that purchased Lets Do Lunch tickets, Chinese Auction tickets and made donations/sponsorships to support the frail, homebound elderly of the Roanoke Valley that rely on Meals-on-Wheels. This year with your support, LOA sold 1953 lunches, an increase of 634 over last year and we raised over $42,000, an increase of $15,000 over last year. This is the most we have ever made on this fundraiser! The Chinese Auction that is part of Let s Do Lunch raised $2,000 more than last year as well! And a Special Thank You to the 100 plus volunteers that helped make this event successful! Please mark your calendar for the third Friday June 21, 2013 for next year s event. Other fundraising: This past year, Meals-on-Wheels also participated in two Belk Charity Days, a Charity Night at Abuelos and monthly staff Jeans and T-shirt days! And we just kicked off our second annual Grocery Raffle! We also have an ongoing car donation program that you can participate in at anytime. If you would like more information (flyers, donation form, etc) please call or Michele Daley!

The biggest need is always getting people to deliver the gifts to the homes of the recipients (something you all have experience with!). If you or someone you know would like to participate by buying a gift for a senior, the Christmas trees with the senior wish list tags will be at the following locations: Valley View Mall Olive Garden LOA Main office Green Ridge Center The Glebe Daleville Emeritus at Cave Spring, Ridgewood Gardens and Roanoke Cloverdale Post Office Home Instead Office on Peters Creek Road Soup for Seniors: Help end senior hunger by giving soup and crackers to the LOA s annual Soup for Seniors collection in collaboration with AARP. Your contribution will make a huge difference in the lives of your homebound neighbors. The drive will take place February 4-9 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The main collection site is New Covenant Christian Church, 4807 Cove Road., NW, Roanoke. Other collection sites include: All Bank of America Roanoke locations and in Daleville. ο Vinton 201 S. Pollard Street, Vinton ο Downtown 302 S. There are many ways you can help us in our endeavors. The easiest way is to donate a can or cans of soup and bring it to one of our many collection sites. All the items collected will be put into reusable cloth bags provided by AARP and distributed into the homes of our elderly neighbors. If you are a part of a civic group, church group or if you want to collect as a service project with your business, we will welcome any and all donations. The more we collect, the more we can serve. We are also in need of volunteers. Volunteers play a vital role in this project and it cannot be done without their help. More information about the project can be found at and or by calling the LOA at If you would like to make a monetary contribution, you may send it to Soup for Seniors, LOA Area Agency on Aging, PO Box 14205, Roanoke, VA NO MEAL DELIVERY on: Monday, November 12 Thursday, November 15 Thursday & Friday, November 22 & 23 Monday & Tuesday, December 24 & 25 Monday & Tuesday, December 31 & Jan 1 Monday, January 21 Monday, February 18 Volunteers are unpaid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless. - Anonymous If any of these dates fall on your regularly scheduled days and you would be willing to pick up another shift, please let your Area Supervisor know as soon as you can.
