3 To the Contact Lens Practitioner Contact Lenses & Solutions Summary s goal is to provide you with a concise, easy-to-use, chairside informational source to aid in patient care decision-making. It follows the K.I.S.S. philosophy - keep it simple and streamlined. We have incorporated list prices for soft contact lenses, however these prices are approximate, and are provided as a guideline. For exact pricing, costs for atypical powers or other parameters, warranty or exchange policies, or for more information about products, contact the manufacturers and distributors listed on Page 29. To provide you with a method to compare lens designs, we ve taken the liberty of standardizing manufacturers descriptions of their lens parameters. Unless otherwise indicated, center thickness specified is for average minus power. We ve arranged lenses by brand name rather than by company because that s how we refer to them in practice. In addition, ongoing corporate acquisitions make brand identification a more consistent system as all names are registered or trademarked. In addition to registered or trademarked names, each material has a generic name. Because an understanding of generic hydrogel materials is important as it relates to disinfection systems and Dk values, please take a moment to read the information under Hydrogel and Silicone Hydrogel Lens General Considerations on Page 5. Due to the growing popularity of silicone hydrogel contact lens prescribing and in response to reader requests, we have made the words Silicone hydrogel bold in all silicone hydrogel lens listings to make those listings easier to locate. We trust the Contact Lenses & Solutions Summary continues to fulfill your needs. It is made possible through an educational grant from VISTAKON, Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. 5 Soft Contact Lenses Hydrogel and Silicone Hydrogel Lens General Considerations The FDA gives each contact lens material a generic name. In general, all hydrogel and silicone hydrogel lens generic names end in the suffix filcon and all nonhydrogel lenses end in focon. Hydrogel lenses are categorized into five groupings for purposes of evaluating effects of accessory products upon the lens material. Lenses with less than 50 percent water content are considered to be low water and the others are high water. Less reactive surfaces are termed nonionic and more reactive materials are labeled ionic. Silicone hydrogel lenses are Group 5, which is in the process of being updated and subdivided further. This is described in the article Proposed Silicone Hydrogel Lens Grouping Systems for Lens Care Product Compatibility Testing by Joseph Hutter, PhD, Angela Green, PhD, and Malvina Eydelman, MD, in Eye and Contact Lens, 2012 Nov;38(6): The FDA proposal has been sent out for comments, and it will then be finalized. Disinfection of hydrogel and silicone hydrogel lenses can usually be done safely and effectively by approved chemical or hydrogen peroxide systems. However, some Group 4 ionic polymers may react negatively with potassium sorbate- or sorbic acid-preserved solutions. In the term Dk, D stands for diffusion and k for solubility. The oxygen permeability of hydrogel lenses is almost entirely the result of solubility and GROUP 1 Low Water (<50% H 2 O) Nonionic Hydrogel Polymers tefilcon (38%) (Dk = 8.9) LL Bifocal tetrafilcon A (43%) (Dk = 9) Preference Preference Toric Preference Toric XR helfilcon A&B (45%) (Dk = 12) Continental Toric Flexlens Aphakic Flexlens Optima Toric Flexlens Toric mafilcon (33%) (Dk = 4) Menicon polymacon (38%) (Dk = 9) Alden Classic 38 LifeStyle Toric Sphere and Toric Bifocal Biomedics 38 LL-38 Clearcolor lenses Metrosoft II Esstech PS Multifocal Metrosoft Toric Esstech PSD Natural Touch Esstech SV Occasions HD Optima 38 HD-T Simulvue 38 HDX Sof-form II HDX-T Soflens Horizon 38 Soflens 38 Ideal Soft Soflens Multifocal LifeStyle MV2 Unilens 38 LifeStyle Xtra Westhin Toric LifeStyle 4Vue hioxifilcon B (49%) (Dk = 15) Alden HP Intelliwave Alden HP Toric Multifocal Toric Aquaease Quattro Essential Soft Satureyes Toric Multifocal Satureyes Toric Flexlens and Multifocal Intelliwave Aspheric SpecialEyes 49 Intelliwave Aspheric Toric and Sphere Toric Intelliwave Multifocal Note: All X-Cel lenses are available in helfilcon A, hioxifilcon A, hioxifilcon B, and methafilcon A. In silicone hydrogel materials, oxygen permeability is a combination of solubility and diffusion, with the larger amount from diffusion. That is, the hydrogel component in the formulation provides solubility and the silicone component provides diffusion. Each generic material below is accompanied by a representative Dk number. A clinically useful approximation is to consider Dk values for hydrogel lenses in three groups: H 2 O Dk 38±% 9± 55±% 18± 75±% 36± It is also important to remember that Dk/t (central transmissibility) and Dk/t (average overall transmissibility) are dependent upon contact lens thickness configuration and are more important than Dk with hydrogel lenses. With silicone hydrogel contact lenses, Dk/t and Dk/t are more similar than with hydrogel lenses. This table should assist you in identifying specific lenses in each category as related to disinfection and Dk; and it will also help you determine an appropriate mix of lens types for your practice. 16 Your patients protect their skin. Help protect their eyes. Many patients are unaware of the long-term implications that may be associated with cumulative day-to-day ultraviolet (UV) exposure to eye health. 1 UV-blocking contact lenses worn in addition to sunglasses and a wide-brim hat can provide an additional layer of protection against UV radiation. 2 * UV-blocking percentages are based on an average across the wavelength spectrum. ACUVUE Brand Contact Lenses are indicated for vision correction. As with any contact lens, eye problems, including corneal ulcers, can develop. Some wearers may experience mild irritation, itching or discomfort. Lenses should not be prescribed if patients have any eye infection, or experience eye discomfort, excessive tearing, vision changes, redness or other eye problems. Consult the package insert for complete information. Complete information is also available from VISTAKON Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., by calling or by visiting acuvueprofessional.com.

17 Educate your patients about ACUVUE Brand Contact Lenses the only major brand to block at least 97% of UVB and 81% of UVA rays as standard across the entire line.* To learn more, visit acuvueprofessional.com. Helps protect against transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye. WARNING: UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses, because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed. NOTE: Long-term exposure to UV radiation is one of the risk factors associated with cataracts. Exposure is based on a number of factors such as environmental conditions (altitude, geography, cloud cover) and personal factors (extent and nature of outdoor activities). UV-blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. However, clinical studies have not been done to demonstrate that wearing UV-blocking contact lenses reduces the risk of developing cataracts or other eye disorders. Consult your eye care practitioner for more information. References: 1. The big picture: eye protection is always in season. The Vision Council Web site. les/vcuvreport2013final.pdf.
