Welcome & Introduction We are proud to present the programme for Destination DK August The purpose of this course is to help students make the best of their stay in Aarhus by providing them with intensive Danish language training as well as an introduction to Danish culture and society. The programme allows students plenty of opportunities to get to know each other and the beautiful city of Aarhus. This guide contains a detailed introduction to each activity and a course calendar. We hope that you will make the most of your stay here and participate in the numerous activities Aarhus University (AU) and the city have to offer. Charlotte Kristensen International Coordinator csk@adm.au.dk The Organisers Destination DK is organized by the International Centre at Aarhus University in cooperation with Studenterhus Århus and LærDansk. International Centre (IC) The IC is the administrative office for international students at Aarhus University. The IC is responsible for the morning language training, the afternoon lectures and excursions during Destination DK. The IC also manages all administrative and practical matters for exchange students, such as enrolment and accommodation. Studenterhus Århus () is the meeting place for international and Danish students in Århus. is responsible for many of the social activities during Destination DK. The also organizes social and cultural activities for its members throughout the year. LærDansk Lærdansk has more than 30 years experience in teaching Danish to foreigners. They offer specialist classes for students all year round.

3 AUGUST INTRODUCTION What is Destination DK? Destination DK is an intensive Danish language and culture introductory course including social activities and practical guidance. The programme is offered to international students at AU and consists of two equally important parts: Language training Please find a detailed description on the following page. Cultural programme The afternoon programme consists of a wide variety of cultural evens including lectures, excursions and social activities. Students will be divided into groups for some of these activities. This brochure contains a detailed introduction to each activity and a course calendar. Attendance Please note that attendance is mandatory and that you are expected to be present on the first day. This is important for several reasons: On the first day you will receive a lot of important and practical information about the course. The language teachers will test your knowledge of Danish on the first day to ensure that you are placed in a group matching your language skills. Course Certificate A course certificate will be issued to students who have participated in at least 85% of the language classes in the programme. Credits students who receive a course certificate will receive 3 ECTS credits. Students need to check with their home institutions if the credits are transferable to their respective programmes of study.

4 4 AUGUST 2011 LANGUAGE TRAINING Teaching methods Each class will have approximately 15 students, which will be arranged by Danish language ability. There will be an assessment test administered on the first day of the course in order to assign students to the correct class that best suits their current level of Danish. The aim of the course The aim of this intensive language course is to provide students, who have little or no prior knowledge of Danish, with sufficient language skills to communicate with fellow students and university staff and to cope with everyday life in Denmark. The course will not prepare participants to take part in academic discussions or to pursue university level studies entirely in Danish. Rather, it will provide students with a solid foundation for continuing their practical and theoretical studies of the Danish language. Danish is the primary language of instruction at all levels, but English will be used occasionally when needed. The course focuses on both written and spoken Danish through written and oral exercises as well as through presentations, movies, role-playing and songs. Students are expected to do one to two hours of homework, in addition to their class attendance, each day. Evaluation Students will have the possibility to complete a written examination in order to receive an assessment for consideration by their home university. This written assessment is not mandatory, but will be administered upon request. Upper level courses are also available for advanced students, who would like to improve their existing Danish language skills.

8 8 AUGUST 2011 ACTIVITIES Welcome Dinner Friday 29/07 18: Århus C Just arrived in Aarhus with an empty fridge and no friends yet? Touch down at the student house for a warm meal and lots of socialising with your new fellow students. The Student House staff will be there to help with bus plans, bike rentals, telephone cards, city maps, where togo for kitchen utensils, bed linen, and all other practicalities when arriveing to a new place. Welcome Party Saturday 30/07 20:00 Århus Nothing says welcome like a cool party! There will be dancing, DJs and who knows, maybe even a live band, ready to start the soundtrack to yoru stay in Denmark. Brunch & Museum Sunday Sunday 31/07 Århus After a busy night partying, Sundays are the perfect day for visiting cafés and museums. Let yourself be introduced to the Danish Café Brunch followed by a tour of either the artistic Aarhus, with visits to the Art House and Galleri Image, or the historical Aarhus, with visits to the City Museum, thewomen s history museum and the world war II museum. Welcome & Introduction Monday 01/08, 9:30 The Main Hall (Aula), Building 1412 From 9 10:30 you will be welcomed to Aarhus University and introduced to the Destination DK course. In addition, the introduction will provide you with practical information regarding your stay. From 10:15 12:00 a placement test for the languages classes will be administered, and you will be divided into groups according to your language proficiency level.

9 AUGUST Town Hall (intro + guided tour). Which day you go to which activity depends of your group, which will be confirmed at the beginning of the course. Aarhus City Tour (Visit Aarhus) Tuesday 02/08 13:30 Århus This sight seeing tour will start with a presentation by an Aarhus City guide about the city and its history, after which you will divided into small groups and taken on a tour of the city. Each group will be guided by a student who knows the city and at selected locations Århus city guides will make short presentations and answer any questions you might have. International Night and Speed Meeting Tuesday 02/08, 20:00 Århus Arriving in a new place without family and friends can seem overwhelming at times. Creating a network of friends will make your time here more enjoyable and memorable. This International Night is your chance to meet lots of international students for 2 minutes at a time. Over three different days during Destination DK, you will visit ARoS,the Old Town and the We meet at the café inside the museum at ARoS, é 2. Walk (35 minutes) or take bus no. 17 or 53 from the University This is an opportunity to receive a guided tour of ARoS, which is the biggest and most visited art museum in Aarhus. The collection includes art from the Danish Golden Age as well as Danish and international modern art. Particularly impressive is the hyper-realistic five metre tall sculpture Boy by Ron Mueck. After the tour you are welcome to explore the museum on your own. Den Gamle By (The Old We meet at the main Entrance, Viborgvej 2. Take bus no. 3, 14, 25 from the University. This afternoon you will be taken on a guided tour through Den Gamle By, where you will be introduced to what it was like to live and work in a Danish market town hundreds of years ago. You will have the chance to visit the pharmacy, the school and several other old and interesting buildings. You will also meet the locals of Den Gamle By in their living rooms and kitchens making this visit more interactive than a typical visit to a museum. After the tour you will have time to discover Den Gamle By on your own.

10 10 AUGUST 2011 Town We meet at the main entrance of the Town Hall, Rådhuspladsen at 14:00. Walk (35 minutes) or take bus number 17 or 53 from Aarhus University This visit gives you an introduction to local government in Denmark including the division into state, county and municipality. The focus is on the structure and functions of the municipality and political factors. Furthermore the municipal activities and related issues, such as the public school system, are discussed. The visit will commence with a presentation and conclude with a tour of the Town Hall. Don t forget to bring your camera for the view from the tower. Introduction to Danish Culture Thursday 04/08 13:30 The Main Hall (Aula), Building 1412 This presentation will introduce Danish society and culture, giving you an idea of what to expect whilst living in Denmark. Greenland Friday 05/08 13:30 15:30 To be confirmed Fun and Games in the University Park Friday 05/08 International Centre Get into the friendly competitive spirit as we spend the afternoon competing in teams in our own miniature Olympics with disciplines such as treasure hunting, rope pulling, bag racing, Danish baseball, egg racing, team cheering etc. There will be activities for everyone, so come and join us! At the end of the day we all have dinner together on the terrace at the Student House. Remember to dress practically.dinner and drink included! Trip to Legoland (optional) Sunday 07/08 09:00 Århus LEGOLAND is Denmark s most famous and popular amusement park, where everything, almost, is made from Lego. Explore fascinating Miniland, the incredible world built from millions of LEGO bricks. Enjoy the thrill of riding The Dragon rollercoaster at the King s Castle. Take the submarine down to the sharks in Atlantis by SEA

11 AUGUST LIFE. Bake campfire bread with Chief Longears, and pan for gold in the Wild West. Remember to bring both swimwear and an eyepatch, so you can join in the wet and wild sea battle in the Pirate Lagoon. And be sure to keep your head cool and your trigger warm, when you embark on the awesome treasure hunt in THE TEMPLE. There aremore than 50 exciting attractions and a series of amazing events waiting for you. We leave Aarhus by bus at??? from the parking lot behind the Student House. There will be a beverage and a small drink on the way down, and you can either bring your own lunch or try one of the many theme restaurants in the park. We will arrive back in Aarhus at approx. 21:00. Small snack included. Movie night Monday 08/08 Studenterhus Århus In collaboration with the local Art Cinema East of Paradise, we give you a look into Danish movie making with the Oscar award winning In a Better World, entitled Hævnen in Danish. Residence Certificate and National Registry Wednesday 10/08 12:30 International Centre This is an opportunity for all students staying in Aarhus for longer than three months to apply for either their residence certificate (EU-citizens) or register with the National Registry for their CPR number (Nordic and non EU-citizens). Be sure to bring the relevant application form and all relevant personal documents (see Student Guide for details). Pub Quiz Night Friday 12/08 Studenterhus Århus Our famous local quiz master has put together yet another of his mindtwisting pub quizzes, where the categories can be anything from famous cult movie oneliners to ancient greek mythology and everything in between. Be prepared to spend an evening searching for answers! Party & BBQ Saturday 13/08, Studenterhus Århus Studenterhus Århus will host a party for all participants in Destination DK. You will have the opportunity to network and socialise with other participants, mentors and staff. Canoening Trip to the Sky Mountain (optional) Sunday 14/08 09:00 Studenterhus Århus Visit the beautiful Silkeborg lakes and climb Sky Mountain. We take the train from Aarhus to Silkeborg at 9:00 and then go by canoe to Sky Mountain, where you can choose either to go back by canoe after climbing the mountain (147 m) and takethe train to Aarhus (6 hrs. of canoeing in total) or you can choose to go by bus back to Aarhus after climbing the mountain (3 hrs. of canoeing). There will be small energy snacks included in the canoes, but remember to bring lunch and practical clothes.
