2 02 WKN news 4/2014 WKN wind farms Kastorf and Dargies put into operation TURNKEY HANDOVER TO THE INVESTOR KGAL: After commissioning on schedule, the Husum-based WKN-Group handed over wind farms Kastorf (Germany) as well as Dargies (France) to the asset manager KGAL. KGAL has inserted wind farm Kastorf to the institutional fund ESPF 3 while the Dargies project has been yielded to a single account. The Schleswig-Holstein project Kastorf in the district of Herzogtum-Lauenburg consists of five wind turbines of the Vestas type V112 each with an installed capacity of megawatts. Two of the turbines have been erected at a hub height of 94 metres and the other three each at a hub height of 119 metres. The expected annual power production of the 15.4 megawatt farm amounts to approximately 42 million kilowatt hours. Thus, the wind farm developed by WKN will now provide environmentally friendly energy to about 12,000 households in Schleswig-Holstein. The French Dargies wind farm with an overall output of 12 megawatts consisting of six Enercon E82-type turbines, each with 2.0 megawatts capacity and a hub height of 78 metres, is located in the Picardie region (North of France). The expected annual electricity production amounts about 30 gigawatt hours. The wind farm developed by WKN will provide more than 6,000 French households with green electricity. KGAL has already acquired several wind farm projects in Germany and abroad from WKN AG. 3 03 RED KITE looking for prey Wind energy and nature conservation WITH AND IN NATURE The development of sites for the use of wind energy is directly coupled with the respect for nature preservation interests. Each larger project in Germany is subject to an environmental compatibility test. Potential interference with nature and the landscape is assessed and compensated appropriately if needs to be. Negative impacts on the environment are clearly avoided through careful site planning, explains Björn Awiszus, Head of WKN Project Development Germany. In many cases undoubtedly a long and complex procedure. Depending on the location, the procurement of long-term surveys and expert reports on the most various issues is certainly required. In the recently completed wind farm Kastorf (Schleswig-Holstein) for example, approximately 14 hectares of compensation area serve to divert the Red Kite over the entire operating time of the wind farm. The area, with its mixture of flowers, grass clover and fallow land, is not only refreshing to the human eye, but also provides a new, unencumbered home for numerous insects, rodents and birds like the Red Kite. In the planned Groß Niendorf project in Schleswig-Holstein, three independent experts working on behalf of WKN AG are currently observing all flight movements of sensitive birdlife over a period of 70 days for 8 hours a day. A pair of sea eagles lives in the peripheral area of the planned wind farm, thus making a very careful long-term study essential. Inevitably winter approaches, bringing with it various inconveniences for house owners and tenants alike, which may burden individual insurance coverage. THE DRAWBACKS OF THE COLD SEASON WINTER SERVICES The responsibility for the clearance of pavements lies within the range of responsibility of the owner or tenant of the house. If this is neglected and a third party comes to harm, compensation liability consequentially results. This may be covered by liability insurance. However, whether the existing private liability insurance is sufficient for this should be examined on the basis of actual circumstances. PIPE BREAKAGE Damage to water or heating system pipes caused by frost may also result in consequential damage to the building and/or its furnishings. This is generally a case for residential buildings insurance and/or household insurance. However, insurance coverage for frost damage only exists if the heating pipes were sufficiently heated during the cold season. Therefore, owners and tenants must ensure sufficient room temperature and undertake all other appropriate precautions. SNOW LOAD Large quantities of snow within a short time can cause regular problems for many low and high mountain regions. Frequently, flat roofs as are common on garages and carports are unable to withstand the heavy loads. Such damage is classed as natural hazard coverage in buildings insurance. ROOF SNOW SLIDES Each year, parked vehicles are damaged by snow slides. Full comprehensive insurance covers such damage in all cases due to damaging influences from the outside. However, some insurance companies also offer this coverage as part of partially comprehensive insurance. When parking the vehicle, it is important to observe the status of the snow on the surrounding roofs, so that the insurance company cannot allege gross negligence. 7 07 Guaranteed interest rate falls by almost 30 percent LEGISLATION HAS NOW REACTED TO THE PERSISTENT GENERAL LOW INTEREST RATE: Legislation has now reacted to the persistent general low interest rate: At the beginning of the coming year, the guaranteed interest rate for life insurance products will be reduced by almost 30 percent. It will then be only 1.25 percent, as opposed to the current 1.75 percent. Also this interest rate is hard to find on a permanent basis (guaranteed) in other forms of savings, however a higher interest rate is of course more attractive. Therefore the experts from the Capital-Concept Assekuranz at the Husum-based House of Future Energies recommend securing the high guaranteed interest this year. Many areas of everyday life will certainly be subject to permanent cost increases (e.g. ener gy, mobility, etc.). At old age, this may result in additional gaps that could not be anticipated years before. It is therefore warmly advisable for anyone saving for later to check whether his pension insurance may need a little polishing, states Ludger Schmiegelt, Managing Director of the Husum-based insurance agency Capital-Concept Assekuranz. Anyone who has not yet made provisions for later in life has only little time left to secure attractive guarantees for old age. The drop in the guaranteed interest rate will very probably also affect the life insurance divisions that serve only for term life insurance (e. g. occupational invalidity, death, care, etc.). The guaranteed interest rate is one of the calculation bases on which the required premium is determined. If a low interest rate has to be anticipated, a calculation gap arises that needs to be filled with premiums. The branch therefore expects increasing premiums for all life insurance sectors. Anyone wanting to provide for later is advised to conclude a contract by the end of the year. This guarantees the current tariff-based contribution, Ludger Schmiegelt says.
