3 FOREWORD Dear Festivalgoers A warm welcome to the weekend of the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, with which Switzerland is once again writing a new chapter of history at the Gotthard something we should all be proud of. Thanks are due to the generations who made this project of the century possible, and to the builder, AlpTransit Gotthard AG. Special thanks also go to the thousands of SBB employees who are making the inauguration of this record-breaking tunnel possible. And, last but not least, thanks go to the Swiss people, whose votes in several referendums have laid the basis for the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA), with the Gotthard Base Tunnel as its centrepiece. Join us in celebrating this milestone in the history of Swiss transport! At four festival sites in the north and south, you ll find attractions, information, culture and culinary delights awaiting you. And don t miss the chance to travel through the new tunnel yourself in a Gottardo Shuttle a railway experience you will never forget. You can also look forward to interesting contributions from the Gotthard cantons and from our partners from the fields of science and research, who give us a glimpse into the world of tomorrow. The opening of the world s longest railway tunnel is an ideal opportunity to get to grips with transport and mobility of the future. We ll show how new technologies and customer needs have fundamentally changed the mobility market. Don t be surprised if you suddenly find a drone hovering over your head or a driverless car cruising past Gotthard is and will remain a special place where history in mobility has forever been written. Andreas Meyer, CEO SBB AG Foreword Public Event Gottardo

21 THEATRICAL PERFORMANCES Artistic production 350 performers will provide entertainment in the north: choirs and dance groups from the Uri region, international gymnasts and aerial acrobats, various professional musicians and Swiss Army formations. Spectators will sit close to the performers in a line along the track in the Rynächt workshop building. In the south, 240 performers will take to the stage: gymnasts and aerial acrobats, alpine horn blowers, choirs, the Swiss Army band. The production will take place on a field near the information centre in Pollegio in the open air in front of a large circle for video projections. There are differences between north and south in terms of space availability, but the aim is to achieve the same standard of content. 1. Sacre del Gottardo This is the title of the first part of the artistic programme. The French word sacre can be translated as anointment or consecration. It has a feeling of ritual, of ceremony. Celebration of the project of the century, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, calls for grand gestures, for satisfied pathos, for holy gravity. But the word sacre or rather sacrifice, sacred brings to mind other connotations too: indeed, this sense of Theatrical Performances Public Event Gottardo

22 sacrifice. In Igor Stravinsky s world-famous ballet Sacre du printemps a ritual human sacrifice is carried out archaic, wild, brutal. Tunnels are impressive monuments to human innovation and collaborative achievement, but also to pain and suffering. The tunnel projects in the 19th century were linked with destruction and human oppression. Many workers paid for the incursion into the mountain with their lives. Even with today s tunnel boring, the sense remains of ultimately how dangerous man s struggle with the giant rocky mass can be. Tunnel builders know about the unpredictability of nature and the risk in what they do. And so, alongside modern large-scale machines eating into the rock face, you will still find the flickering light at the foot of the statue of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. 2. Mountain demons People who live and work in the mountains are familiar with dangers: stone masses suddenly plunge into the deep, sludge or snow avalanches destroy houses, villages, landscapes in an instant. People are shaken by raging storms. The experience of surrendering to nature is reflected in Alpine culture. It banishes the fears and threats of the outside world into its own inner self. Stories are told of evil demons; devils and spooky shapes are drawn; weird sounds and rhythms are produced; in dances, spirits leap over the peaks or spring up from the depths of rock crevices. Fervently and with deep melancholy in their soul, the sustained tones of yodellers sing out over hill and dale. Art celebrates the beauty of the Alpine glow, the might of the starry sky in the mountains, and the longing for security in the village community. 22 Public Event Gottardo 2016 Theatrical Performances

23 3. Exuberance and joy The inaugural trains are nearing their destinations, the demons disappear or lose their menace. The engineering masterpiece and the political-economic achievement are celebrated with joy. North and south come together: Mediterranean meets mid-european industrial landscape, Fellini figures come up against austere high-flyers, Monteverdi meets Bach, tarantella meets Alpine dance, montanara meets Gloria And Saint Barbara blesses the train passengers and representatives at the entrance to the tunnel, so that the inaugural trains will mark the beginning of good times. In the context of the celebrations around the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, Ticino is already in the spotlight on 31 May, when the conference of European transport ministers takes place in Lugano. The exhibition pavilion will open its doors for the first time on 1 June to guests on the inaugural train, and then on 4 and 5 June for the public festival. The Ticino Piazza will represent a Swiss cross, with each of the four sides devoted to one of the topics that characterise Ticino: Mobility: a topic dealt with by the mobility department of the cantonal construction and transport department. Multimedia presentations and a model of the project for Lugano s new Treno-Tram transport network will show visitors the demands of the past and strategies for the future in the area of mobility, which has a decisive impact on the quality of life of the population. Tourism: one of the sectors that will change with the new tunnel. In the part of the exhibition that the Ticino tourism agency has designed in collaboration with the four regional tourism organisations, multimedia stations will show what the southern canton of Ticino has to offer to visitors from around the world. Gastronomy: the cantonal food conference part of the exhibition is all about food; visitors can sample typical Ticino food and wines here. A cuvée spéciale Ticino merlot will also be on offer, produced especially for the occasion as a red or white wine. Arts and crafts: in the Ticino handcraft association s part of the exhibition, professionals will be demonstrating their work to the public and offering handcrafts for sale. 60 ALPTRANSIT/PROJECT ENGINEERS Building the world s longest railway tunnel Immerse yourself in the world of tunnel construction. At the festival sites of Rynächt and Pollegio, you ll discover a whole host of interesting facts about the construction of the world s longest railway tunnel. And you can even take your very own piece of the Gotthard home with you. You ll find information about the building and railway infrastructure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in an exhibition covering 150 square metres. Discover which rock strata the tunnel workers came up against and the forces the mountain can produce. In the cinema you ll see impressive images that will show you what it takes to set up a construction project of this magnitude. A milestone in Swiss transport policy With the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, Switzerland has reached a milestone in the implementation of its transport policy. The scheme, costing 12 billion Swiss francs and commissioned and supervised by the Federal Government, is a technically highly challenging and complex project. Thanks to the new tunnel, the railway will be able to transport more freight through the Alps more quickly and with fewer locomotives. This brings Switzerland a significant step closer to its goal of shifting freight transport from road to rail. In terms of passenger travel, northern and southern Switzerland will be three-quarters of an hour closer to each other after the completion of the work on the Ceneri Base Tunnel and its approach routes. A unique infrastructure project The Gotthard Base Tunnel is not only unique in terms of its length and complexity: Switzerland also broke new ground in terms of organisation and supervision. AlpTransit Gotthard AG was founded especially to plan and implement the Gotthard Base Tunnel project. As the lead contractor, it is responsible for ensuring that the project of the century is implemented on time and to budget. AlpTransit Gotthard s most important and most direct contact is the Federal Office of Transport (FOT), which is both the supervising body and the authorising authority. SBB, as the operator, will put the new Gotthard Base Tunnel into service from December 2016, on schedule. 56 Public Event Gottardo 2016 Alptransit/Project Engineers

61 17 years of construction At 57 kilometres, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is not only the world s longest railway tunnel, but also an impressive feat of engineering skill. Its construction has taken 17 years: the work was started in Sedrun in 1999 and in October 2010 the miners celebrated the main breakthrough between Sedrun and Faido. Internal fitting out and technical installation followed. Did you know that: the whole tunnel system of the Gotthard Base Tunnel including all the ducts and cross passages is 152 km long? the excavated material from the Gotthard Base Tunnel would fill a freight train the length of the distance from Zurich to Chicago? at the point of breakthrough of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the deviation was only 1 cm in height and 8 cm in width? 2.3 million tonnes of concrete were used for the internal construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel? 290 km of track have been laid in the Gotthard Base Tunnel? in the testing phase, over 3,500 test trips were made? 62 CREDIT SUISSE Commitment to Switzerland for 160 years Visit our pavilion at the Gotthard public festival and celebrate with us! Credit Suisse and the Gotthard have strong historical links through the pioneer Alfred Escher. Alfred Escher was not only the founder of the institution that is now known as Credit Suisse, but also the driving force behind the Gotthard Railway and the first Gotthard tunnel. In our pavilion, you can review the exciting history of the bank over the last 160 years and have an entertaining look at the effect the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel might have on the regions around it. Then, from the top floor, enjoy the panoramic view of the entire festival site. And, of course, we have also thought about our youngest visitors there s a special slide for them to enjoy in the shape of a mini Gotthard tunnel tube. Football fans amongst you have the chance to get a unique souvenir. Before the members of the Swiss national football team run out for their first competitive match in France on 11 June, our photo booth will give you the chance to have your picture taken with them virtually, of course! 58 Public Event Gottardo 2016 Credit Suisse

64 AN INVITATION FROM DIE MOBILIAR What if you could help shape the future? We have developed something really special for our guests: at our two stands in Pollegio and Rynächt, you ll find a walk-through art installation! The opening of the new tunnel will stir and unite Switzerland and its symbolic power fits perfectly with the entrepreneurial attitude of die Mobiliar: responsible, futureoriented planning and action are a tradition with us. For 190 years, our mutual roots have been the basis for active support of projects that will benefit the general public. We can all help to shape the future of Switzerland in a creative and sustainable way. Art can give us important inspiration here, encouraging us to look at socially re levant topics from a new angle. Based on this conviction, we invited the internationally known Swiss artist Kerim Seiler to make two installations for the opening festivities. In Rynächt, we are inviting you to take a moment to rest; in Pollegio, you ll find a spectacular art pavilion a pulsating platform for discussion and live music. Step into a world which makes new ideas possible. We look forward to seeing you. 67 ABB On track to the future In the same year that the Gotthard Base Tunnel is opening, ABB is celebrating 125 years of business in Switzerland. In 1891 Charles Brown and Walter Boveri founded the company in Baden, and since then it has been closely linked with rail transport in Switzerland and with Gotthard projects. The new Gotthard Base Tunnel includes many ABB systems and products. They provide the energy for the tunnel infrastructure and run the most powerful tunnel ventilation system in the world. With these installations, ABB is a part of this ground-breaking project and as a main partner of Gottardo it aims to continue the writing of this success story at the public event. At the ABB exhibition in Rynächt and Pollegio, discover the shared history of ABB and the Gotthard tunnel: from electrification and the legendary crocodile locomotives through to products in the new Gotthard Base Tunnel. An impressive multimedia show will offer you an insight into what ABB is researching, developing and producing today for a sustainable world of tomorrow. And take a glimpse into the future with YuMi. The two exhibitions at the north and south tunnel entrances show a range of designs from various ages, giving rise to a certain sense of nostalgia. The replicas of these rare posters advertise touristic, commercial or political issues and express the diversity of visual communication in public spaces. The works date from about 1890 up to the present day. The originals are kept in one of the world s most important poster collections in the Museum für Gestaltung Schaudepot in Zurich. The historical poster exhibition is taking place at the Pollegio and Erstfeld festival sites, with no charge for entry. Museum für Gestaltung Schaudepot, Zürich 64 Public Event Gottardo 2016 APG SGA

72 ETH ZURICH Engineers are shaping Switzerland Without SBB there would be no ETH Zurich, and without ETH Zurich no SBB. Since the early days of modern Switzerland, ETH engineers have worked on the construction of Switzerland s future-oriented infrastructure. In Rynächt and Erstfeld, find out what ideas for tomorrow they are working on today. The origins of SBB and ETH Zurich are closely linked. The rapid spread of the railway in Switzerland can be attributed to the political skill and scientific commitment of the entrepreneur Alfred Escher. The Gotthard line, and with it the first Gotthard tunnel, can also be traced back to him. In order to train the required specialists, Escher and some like-minded people decided to found an educational establishment for engineers. In 1855 the ETH Zurich was born under the name Polytechnikum. Today around 20,000 students, including 4,000 studying for doctorates, from over 120 countries, are taught by 500 ETH professors. Together they conduct research in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, architecture, mathematics and system sciences as well as management and social science. At the heart of Europe and globally linked, they develop solutions for the global demands of today and tomorrow. ETH Zurich s offering In Rynächt you can discover, with the help of experiments, exactly which forces hold a tunnel arch together, or how you go about ensuring that you can drill into a mountain from both sides and meet in the middle. In addition, mechanical engineering researchers will demonstrate how, in future, autonomous robots may be able to guide you around a strange city. In Erstfeld it s all about electric model racing cars. Mechanical engineering students will show the racing models with which they have topped the world rankings in Formula Student for the past three years, setting new records for acceleration. 68 Public Event Gottardo 2016 ETH Zurich

73 UNIVERSITY OF ST. GALLEN RESEARCH CENTRE FOR TOURISM AND TRANSPORT Where is transport heading? Help us to steer the course of future mobility. Everything points to the fact that mobility will change considerably over the next 20 to 30 years, whether in our work and leisure patterns, or because we will work from home more in the future, or because work and leisure will increasingly blend together. Or in the shape of self-driving vehicles, or the latest technologies in high-speed travel and so on. As part of our Mobility of the Future exhibition in Rynächt, we would like to invite you to give us your opinions on this subject and have some fun in the process. Experience the dynamic of collective intelligence and learn a little more about the future of mobility. We re looking forward to seeing you. Answer N 3 Answer N 4 Question?
