1 AP Summer Assignment 2015 Welcome to AP European History. You re going to love it! This assignment must be mailed to my home address by August 15. Please read Machiavelli s The Prince. The entire text is available on several websites, including You may also purchase any edition of the book, or borrow a copy from the library. Choose one European leader from the list provided. (Note: if you are getting this assignment from the school web page, please contact me at Kimberly.greenberg@sbschools.org to get an approved dictator.) I ve chosen both historical figures and more recent leaders. Research their biography, especially his or her political style and accomplishments or failures. The essay question is: TO WHAT DEGREE does your chosen leader s behavior illustrate that Machiavelli s advice to leaders is still relevant today. Writing Guidelines: Follow all the rules of formal writing. For example: 1. No interest catchers. Avoid intro sentence that s overly broad. Since the dawn of man 2. Avoid 1st and 2nd person (I, we, you). 3. Do not abbreviate or use contractions. 4. Check your drafts for correct spelling and grammar, etc. 5. Type your final with a double-spaced format. Use standard margins. 6. Citations should be used when you are using someone s interpretation of events or individuals. Simple undisputed facts do not need citations. For the purposes of this essay, always offer citations for Machiavelli whether it s a quote or not. 7. Limit quotes to Machiavelli only. Make them short and powerful. You may, of course, cite other sources appropriately, but paraphrase page maximum. 9. Include a Bibliography. Probably 4-5 sources including The Prince. Use EasyBib.com. MLA format for imbedded citations. You will have many imbedded citations for Machiavelli, but may only have one or two per paragraph for other sources. 10. Rubric for essay attached. Content Guidelines: Paragraph #1: The first paragraph should summarize the concepts of The Prince. Segue to your contemporary leader, and the last sentence will be the thesis.

2 Paragraph #2: Focus on Chapters 6-9 and discuss how Machiavelli may have assessed the manner in which your leader took power. You not only need to summarize advice from the Prince, but give up to five specific examples of how your leader utilized the information. Be sure to imbed brief Machiavelli thoughts or quotes (2-3), and cite appropriate outside material. Paragraph #3: Focus on Chapters This is the best known portion of The Prince, and it discusses the qualities of a leader. Again, you ll need up to five specific examples, and imbedded thought or quote from Machiavelli, and appropriate citations from other sources as needed. Paragraph #4: Focus on Chapters Machiavelli discusses how decisions should be made. Relate this to your leader. Same format at other two paragraphs. Paragraph #5: The final paragraph should re-state thesis in simpler language. Do not summarize essay. Go somewhere else, perhaps something relevant but tangential. Do not offer additional evidence that would further establish thesis. When it s finished you ll need to turn it in to turnitin.com.
