1 MASTER OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY Thesis Guidelines Revised 10/2013 THE THESIS: The thesis represents the student's ability to conduct independent research and his/her capacity for original thinking. As it is a significant part of the work done towards the M.A., it should be of the highest quality. Care should be exercised in the selection of the thesis topic and committee. Some theses explore material that has not been studied previously while others reinterpret existing knowledge. Thesis topics emerge in different ways, some from seminar papers. Others emerge from independent research. Passing the oral examination and submission of a signed copy of the thesis signal successful completion of a thesis. THESIS CREDIT: The student receives three credits for the thesis by registering for ARH 8999, normally during his/her final semester. It may be used as the elective course beyond the 11 courses required within the MA degree, or a course beyond the minimum required for the degree. Students must begin work on their topic during the first year in order to complete a thesis in the normal two years for the MA. THESIS COMMITTEE: The thesis committee is composed of a maximum of three faculty members, two from the Department of Architectural History (one acts as director) and one who may be from outside the Department, the School of Architecture or the University. The student is expected to select the thesis director for his/her project and, in consultation with the director, to select the committee. The members should be selected for their interest in the student's topic and the balance they can give to the committee. In certain cases, with the approval of the Architectural History Graduate Director and the thesis director, the student may ask experts from outside the University to serve as advisory members. It should be understood that the University will not compensate outside committee members for their time or for travel expenses should they choose to attend the oral examination. The responsibility for securing members' services resides with the student. The committee advises the student on his/her prospectus and final thesis. It also grants final approval to the thesis THESIS DIRECTOR: (advisor) a full time member of the Architectural History Department directs the thesis. The director determines the necessity of committee meetings and is in charge of the day-to-day direction of the thesis. The student should establish a sound working relationship with the thesis director and keep his/her director informed of any changes. THESIS COMMITTEE MEETINGS: The thesis committee normally does not meet as a group except for the oral defense. If any member of the committee or the student wishes, such a meeting may be called. PROSPECTUS: The prospectus is a brief sketch of what the student intends to study.

2 The student circulates the prospectus to the committee. A copy signed by the thesis director is deposited with the department secretary. No student is allowed to register for thesis credits (AR H 896) until a prospectus has been approved and electronically submitted to the department secretary. The prospectus includes: A. Title page-containing your name, title of thesis and names of committee members and date B. A statement or summary of the topic and the thesis (i.e.: the question asked or argument being made); and the importance of the topic. C. A plan of work and timetable; can be in outline form. D. Sources and materials available, bibliography, and archives you will consult. FORMAT OF THESIS: Written portions of the thesis should follow University guidelines (i.e. MLA [Modern Language Association] Style Manual.) (See notes below and also SCHOLARLY APPARATUS, for special department guidelines particularly on footnotes) If the thesis is to be presented differently, the thesis committee will establish the guidelines. The final thesis should generally be about fifty pages long. It must include a 600-word abstract suitable for publishing. ORAL EXAMINATION: This is the final stage of the thesis process. The student explains and defends his/her work to the thesis committee and other interested faculty members. The time and place of the final oral examination is publicly announced and open to all members of the University faculty. The examination normally lasts an hour. After examination of the Master's candidate and the submitted thesis, the thesis committee votes to accept or reject the thesis. It is common for the committee to ask for some minor revisions and corrections to the submitted thesis. Three copies of the final version of the thesis, approved by the Director and the readers are submitted to the Department Secretary at a date specified by the Department chair prior to the scheduled date of the oral examination. TIMETABLE FOR HISTORY THESIS GUIDELINES: (To be distributed by department.) NOTES FOR WRITING ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY THESES All of these directives apply to both rough and final drafts. 1. Examine completed and successful MA thesis in the Fine Arts Library. This is very important.

3 2. All material submitted to readers must be typed and may not be handwritten. They should be easy to read and not a strain because of poor photocopying. 3. It is expected that you will proofread and correct all copies. Do not expect your readers to correct spelling and grammar. All material submitted in preliminary stages (i.e.: chapters and rough drafts) should be as finished a product as possible. Do not submit material that you know is poorly written and disorganized. Footnotes (or endnotes) must accompany all drafts. Use footnotes or endnotes. Parenthetical citations are not acceptable. 4. All pages must be numbered in the upper right corner. 5. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange with the thesis advisor a timetable for submission of chapters, and whether other thesis committee members will read these. The student should submit to the advisor an outline of the thesis before commencing writing. Students must adhere to the Department schedule for drafts if they expect to graduate at the end of the second year. 6. Do not wait for faculty to find you and return drafts, you should be in touch with them frequently. 7. The final copy must be typed in 12-point type, double-spaced, 1-1/2" on left margin and 1" on all other margins. 8. The sequence of material should be: a. Title Page b. Table of Contents c. List of Illustrations with captions and sources d. Acknowledgments (this may be combined with the introduction) e. Introduction f. A sequence of chapters (the conclusion will be either a chapter, or part of the final chapter). g. Endnotes (or notes may appear as footnotes at the bottom of the page). h. Bibliography i. Illustrations (all illustrations will be grouped at the end). 10. INTRODUCTION: The introduction must contain: a. Thesis statement or argument. This should be your first

4 sentence(s), and is a statement of your argument (i.e. thesis) and what is to be covered. This must appear at the beginning. You can expand on this in subsequent sentences or paragraphs. b. A brief synopsis of what you are going to cover in the thesis, its importance, etc. c. Any special research problems you have had, disclaimers and acknowledgment of other major writings in this area. d. Acknowledgments (optional). 11. CHAPTERS: Each chapter should be a sub-portion of your thesis, and obviously should have a title, and a thesis sentence(s) at the beginning. Remember that a title is not a sentence or part of the text. The final chapter or the final portion of the last chapter should contain your conclusion, a summarization of the thesis. 12. SCHOLARLY APPARATUS: this contains several parts: Endnotes, or footnotes acknowledge the sources used and can be used to expand certain elements, or discuss the strengths and/or weaknesses of the sources. Follow the MLA Handbook, but use full citations, not parenthetical citations. 13. APPENDIX OR APPENDICES: While not always necessary, these can be useful for lists, for discussing topics that lie outside of your main argument, or for reprinting lengthy letters or documents of importance. 14. BIBLIOGRAPHY: This is not simply a list of sources cited, but a list of sources consulted. It may need to be divided in some way, as to published and nonpublished materials, drawings, archives etc. 15. ILLUSTRATIONS: These are last; they must have a figure number and caption, and be keyed to the text. They may be either black and white or color. 16. ABSTRACT: The thesis is to be accompanied by one copy of a 350-word abstract suitable for publishing. Its title page should be the same as that used for the thesis itself; see below. In addition, at the head of the abstract's first page the name of the student, the title of the thesis, the degree, the month and year of submission, and the names of the Department of Architectural History, School of Architecture, and University of Virginia must appear. Do not include this in your bound copies. This does not get bound in the final version of your thesis. An electronic copy must also be submitted to Mary Jo Bateman at mb2tr@virginia.edu.

5 17. The deadlines announced by the Department for the submission of drafts and final copies are absolute. You should strive to be well ahead of these dates. Students who miss the deadlines should not expect to graduate on time. 18. Good clear grammatical writing should be the goal of each student. 19. Maintaining close contact with your thesis advisor and readers is a good policy, do not expect them to pursue you. PHYSICAL STANDARDS FOR PREPARATION OF THESES AND DISSERTATIONS The thesis or dissertation must be typewritten, double spaced, on one side of the paper only, upon white bond paper of good quality (20 pound weight) 8-1/2" by 11", with a left-hand margin of 1-1/2" wide. Illustrations may be printed on heavier paper. The remaining margins are to be 1" wide. The bond paper of good quality is required in order to ensure the longevity of the thesis in the University Archives and Library. The second copy must be of the same quality as the original, whatever process of reproduction is used, though it may be of sixteen-pound weight. Permalife watermarked paper should be used and if you have questions regarding this the UVA Copy Center at Alderman and the UVA Bookstore or Kinko s sells this paper. Ordinary copy paper is not acceptable as it will deteriorate in a very few years. The library only requires two copies now instead of three. You are responsible for all costs of paper, printing, and binding of your thesis. Cost of binding in 2011 was $24.50 per copy. Most of our students have been printing their final at Kinko s which seems to be the easiest.
