8 Kidzaw beginnings see what they saw Kidzaw began as volunteer effort at our local preschool in Oak Park, Illinois. Michelle Talbot was looking for ways to introduce young children to art history and instill a greater sense of art appreciation and awareness. Michelle realized that in the No Child Left Behind environment, educators are being forced to reinforce mathematics and literacy, often times at the expense of art education. Efforts to increase arts funding include arguments that tie arts education to improved standardized test scores. I find it frustrating that we are losing sight of the inherent value of art, says Michelle. I never once picked up my sketch book with the intention of improving my math skills. My artistic skills are a gift I cherish and have led to a very satisfying career. I want my children to appreciate and pursue their passion, whether it be art, music, math or some other genre. I worry that our obsession with test scores and leaving No Child Left Behind is, in fact, leaving the children with artistic gifts behind. I remember so vividly, struggling to keep up with the other children in school.my self-confidence was drained and I felt like something was wrong with me. I realize now it was because I learned differently. When I had children I vowed that I would instill in them an appreciation for their unique talents and gifts. Michelle created an art program for the pre-school in 2007 that introduced the great master painters and celebrated their accomplishments. This program ultimately led to the development of Kidzaw Master Kitz and the Learn. Create. Share. process.

9 Michelle Talbot is the mother of two boys, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and founder of Kidzaw. She started her career in Los Angeles and spent many years as a creative director at Foote Cone & Belding in Chicago before leaving the world of advertising to raise her sons. When not designing Kidzaw tools and illustrations, Michelle is hard at work on projects like turning her home into a pirate ship for Halloween or making her front hall closet a spaceship for her boys to explore the universe. Michelle was born and raised in New Hampshire and now lives in Oak Park, Illinois with her two sons. Jane Chadesh is also the mother of two boys. She has an economics degree from Illinois Wesleyan and a master s degree from the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University. Jane has held executive positions at Herman Miller, NTT Communications and Ameritech prior to becoming Michelle s partner in Kidzaw. Her limited artistic abilities make her a perfect complement to Michelle who often says, if Jane can do it, then certainly a five year old can. In her spare time she is an avid student of Bikram Yoga and metaphysics. Jane lives with her husband and two sons in Oak Park, Illinois.
