3 1. Introduction This manual describes how to configure a Raven CDMA modem. At the moment our CDMA service provider is Verizon wireless. In case you need technical support related to the network connection you may call CDMA CDMA is a new transmission technique and it is an abbreviation for Code Division Multiple Access. During the following two or three years the old CDPD system will be replaced by the CDMA system. Instead of assigning a special frequency to every user logged into the network like in CDPD, everyone is using the same frequency band. The following chapter gives a short description of how CDMA is working. At first you have the original data consisting of zeros and ones as displayed in Fig.1 Figure 1: original data sequence This data is the same in both systems. In the CDMA System you have an additional sequence of zeros and ones (see Fig.2). This sequence is called spread sequence. Each station logged into the network gets a different spread sequence. The original data sequence is multiplied with this spread sequence. The result can be seen in the spectrum (see Fig.3 and 4). Figure 3 shows a simplified spectrum of the original data sequence using the old CDPD technology. There you can see that only a small bandwidth is used which makes the system vulnerable for interferences. Therefore you must maintain a certain Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) to compensate such interferences. That s why you have to have such a high Amplitude A. Using CDPD the subscribers are separated by frequency or time. It depends on the technology used by the service provider. Figure 2: spread sequence 2

4 A Noise level f c f Figure 3: CDPD spectrum Fig.4 shows the spectrum of a CDMA system. Because of the multiplication of these two sequences the spectrum has spread and the amplitude has decreased, because you still have the same TX Power like in an CDPD system. So if you integrate over those 2 orange spectrums (Fig3 and 4) you will get the same amount of power. In a CDMA system the subscribers are separated by the spread sequence, but they are using the same frequency spectrum. While using such a big bandwidth (1,25 MHz) the system is not vulnerable against narrow band interferences. The amplitude of these radio signals can be so low, that a transmission can be hidden in the noise level. To detect the communication you have to know the exact spread sequence otherwise you will just hear noise. The RSSI is not that important like in CDPD systems. CDMA is more vulnerable against time shift and general synchronization errors. That s why a RSSI of about -115 dbm is sometimes enough to access the modem although it will not be a reliable connection. A RSSI of about -100 dbm is a good signal strength for a CDMA modem. 5 3. Configuration of the Raven CDMA modem The Raven CDMA modem can be configured via the CDMA Wireless Ace software, or via a normal serial cable using a PC and Windows Hyperterminal. If a modem has not been activated you have to use the PC and Hyperterminal since you will not be able to establish a radio connection without a proper configuration. At first you have to connect an Antenna and a serial cable to the modem. Than you can power it up. After that you can start Hyperterminal on your PC. You choose COM1 Port (or the COM port you are using) and ,8N1 as the transmission speed and flow control. These are the standard settings of the CDMA modem. If you are not able to establish a connection with these settings the modem could be bad, or somebody else has changed the transmission speed already. In that case you should try 9600,8N1. This is the basic setting to communicate with a datalogger. The registers of the modem can be programmed using AT commands. A list of all registers in the modem is printed below. 3.1 Hot to use the AT commands Whenever you want to access one of the registers printed below you have to type in AT first and then the name of the register you want to access. To read a register you have to add a question mark, or to write an equals sign and the value you want to be set. Here are a few examples of AT commands. You want to read the value in register E: ATE? The modem should return with 1 since it is the current value in this register (see listing below) You want to set the register E: ATE=0 The modem should return 0 You want to reed the register *DNS1: AT*DNS1? The modem should return the current value in that register (here: ) You want to set the register *DNS1: AT*DNS1= The modem should return So whenever you want to reed a register you have to type in AT<name of register>? Whenever you want set a register type in: AT<name of register>=value To store the settings you have to use AT&W. This command stores the values into the memory of the modem. To restart the modem you will have to use ATZ. To see all registers like in the following listing you have to use the AT&V command. 4

Hardware requirements To operate the Raven CDMA modem you will have to use a different antenna since the CDMA frequencies covers both 900 and 1900 MHz bands. CDPD technology is using 900 MHz only. So you will have to use an antenna that is suitable for both frequency bands. Instead of the frequency you often see the network description labeled on the antenna. For 900 MHz it is the cellular network and for 1900 MHz it is the PCS network. The coaxial cable has to be a 50Ω cable like a RG58 or similar ones and you will have to use a male TNC connector. 5. Loggernet and Wireless ACE software using dynamic IP addresses You can use Windows Hyperterminal to get the current IP address of the modem. But then you have to be connected to it via serial cable. You just have to establish a connection (see 3.) and type in AT*NETIP? And the modem responses with its current IP address. Normally you have to use a IP Address to configure Loggernet and Wireless ACE software. Since we are using dynamic IPs with the CDMA modems it is not possible any more. So at first you have to get the current IP address of the modem and that is done by the Airlink IPmanager system. It is as easy as using a fixed IP, but instead of an IP Address you will have to give a name to the modem. Prior to that you will have to set the following registers. 9 *NETPHONE: You have to use the phone number you were given by your network provider (here: Verizon Wireless) *NETUID: It has to be to be: so use the phone number you were given for your modem. *NETPW: vzw It has to be: vzw *DOMAIN: eairlink.com It has to be: eairlink.com *IPMANAGER1: eairlink.com It has to be: eairlink.com *NUMTOIP: 0 It has to be 0 *IPMGRUPDATE1: 10 Updates the DNS server every 10 min If you have chosen a name for the modem, the address instead of the IP would be like the following: Modemname.eairlink.com In this example it would be: earilink.com Now you just simply type in this address instead of the IP Address. If you want to specify a port, handle it as if it would be an IP Address like Modemname.earilink.com : Portnumber 6. DNS As you can see in the configuration listing for the modem you can specify two DNS server. You may not specify the DNS IP Addresses. The modem is able to get them automatically, but it takes additional. So if you know the IP Addresses it is better to store them in the modem (Airlink DNS Server: and ). 8

10 7. Activate a new modem If you want to activate a new CDMA modem you have to call Verizon since Airlink does not do any activation on the Verizon Network. If you have a look at the label on the CDMA modem you will find two serial numbers, the usual S/N and an Electronical Serial Number (ESN). This ESN and the phone number assigned to the modem are used for identification, so be sure that they are stored into the modems memory correctly. When you call Verizon you will have to give them the ESN Number so that they can link the modems ESN with the phone number they will give you. 9
