General presentation of the PhD Programme: The Doctorate Course in Preservation of the Architectural Heritage was first held at Milan-based Politecnico back in Today it is about to celebrate the 31st research and education anniversary where overarching attention will be paid to currently crucial themes such as protection, design and intervention over the built heritage and landscape. The team of professors promoting and participating in the debate under way on a national and international scale will deal with a broad range of issues requiring multi-disciplinary knowledge and competence. On the strength of a solid, long-standing research tradition, the themes addressed and the methodologies adopted are meant to up-date contents and tools, the approach to the modern contemporary themes of cultural heritage protection and, accordingly, foster the development of innovative research processes. The tutorial activities will be contributed by professors from prestigious schools of architecture and engineering as well as foremost experts of protection of the cultural heritage in Italy (ISCR, former ICR, Istituto Centrale del Restauro; Institute for the Conservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage ICVBC - of the CNR), with their multiplicity skills and strong network of partnership with other national and international research institutes and private institutions responsible for the protection and preservation of cultural heritage. Teaching and research activities thereby outline an unprecedented context in the Italian panorama. The doctorate course thus becomes the place where theorization, methodology, investigation into the most significant chapters of the protection of historic architectural and cultural heritage are
connected to complex, challenging operating research themes, on-site and lab experimentation of analytical and diagnostic stages and, finally, the experimentation at building sites which cater for the foremost Italian works. The Faculty Board organization allows to investigate and share extremely relevant, up-to-date topics that, architectural heritage being the high spot of research, describe the complex domain of preservation, a strategic field and, at the same time, one of the chief resources of the Italian economy and future. Being a mix of differentiated research, experimentation and operating methods, the PhD programme provides the candidate with a rich and very interesting experience. The on-going contact with the breakthroughs from studies and research carried out in Italian and international contexts and the will to promote joint projects are fostered through expanding the network of relations the university entertain with other universities and research centres in different geographic areas of the world. In this regard, over the past 3 years the PhD programme in Preservation of the Architectural Heritage has been committed to promoting and coordinating inter-doctoral courses contributed by foreign professors from different European countries. Such activity will further benefit from the co-operation with other PhD programmes in the Politecnico di Milano and the universities that collaborate with the PhD programme activities. 3. Objectives: The PhD programme, lasting three years, calls for the acquisition of 180 credits overall. Thirty credits are concentrated in the first year and are divided as follows: 25 (minimum) offered by PhD courses organized by the PhD programme in Preservation of the architectural heritage, and 5 credits offered by the PhD School. The remaining credits are aimed at personal study and research for the PhD thesis. Moreover, for each PhD candidate a specific study path is organized and PhD candidates may attend courses offered by the School for Specialists (Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Architettonici e del Paesaggio - SSBAP) in Milan and in Genoa, in relation to the various topics of their thesis. In support of research carried out for their thesis, students will benefit from several laboratories both inside and outside the University. The activities undertaken during the second and third year also include attendance of workshops, seminars, national and international conferences related to individual research, with great attention to conferences wherein PhD candidates present the results, even partial, of their research theses. The academic plan of the PhD programme revolves around 5 main research areas: 1. Preservation Culture and Practice; 2. Diagnostics of Materials and Structures and Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings; 3. Methods and Themes of Historical Research; 4. Construction History; 5. Historical Territory and Landscape.
Educational activities are related to research either under way or at an early stage of development, some of which addresses major monumental structures and some of the most renowned sites of the world. To the aim of their thesis research, PhD candidates have the opportunity to rely on facilities and laboratories, both inside and outside the University, the breadth and width of which provides them with a crucial support to the aim of acquiring competence for highly qualified research activities in the domain of cultural heritage protection. As for the thesis research, candidates thus have the opportunity to address and investigate in-depth the wide-ranging themes connected to heritage knowledge and preservation broadly meant, such as advanced methods of investigation; knowledge management and preservation processes applied to historic traditional buildings, as the ones related to the archaeological sites and remains or to twentieth-century heritage and cultural landscapes. This aspect increases the technical characteristics, and will make PhD immediately competitive at the European level. The multi-disciplinary nature of the doctoral courses, encouraged in the framework of the PhD programme since its establishment, equally values the fundamental contribution of historical research alongside its methods; at the same time it features innovative, pioneering themes: research about the energy response of buildings targeted to the reuse of existing technical systems and to reducing the impact of new systems which, since long, have been extensively addressed by the PhD programme and at the heart of an International exchange with European universities and research labs; the research about BIM technologies applied to architectural heritage, as evidenced by Building Information Modelling for the current architectural heritage; the studies carried about the seismic vulnerability of buildings, which will be keyed to investigating the cognitive methods underlying the Guidelines for the assessment and reduction of the seismic hazard the cultural heritage (Ministerial Circular n.26 of 2nd October 2010, D.P.C.M. 9th February ). 4. Professional opportunities and job market Graduates of the PhD programme have often found employment in public sector conservation institutions at progressively higher levels, as well as in professional practices and in the business world, in specific specialized fields. As regards Italy, the relationship with Italian Ministero per i beni e le attività culturali e il turismo, Mibact, has been definitely fruitful, especially when we consider that many among the best PhDs in Preservation of Architectural Heritage have been hired as officers and executives to the above ministry. 5. Enrolment at the PhD Programme 5.1 Admission requirements Italian and foreign citizens can apply. They are requested to have graduated in accordance with the pre-existing laws D.M n. 509 or they to have a master of science degree in accordance with D.M n. 509 or a master of science in accordance with D.M n. 270 or similar academic title obtained abroad, equivalent for duration and content to the Italian title and for an overall duration of university studies of at least five years. The certified knowledge of the English language is a requirement for admission. Please refer to the Ph.D. School web site for details.
The admission to the programmes will be decided according to the evaluation of the curricula of the studies, the motivation letter and according to an illustrative paper about the development of a possible PhD research, which candidates will send contextually with their application to the admission announcement. 5.2 Admission deadlines and number of vacancies The number of vacancies is indicated in the Call for admission to the 31st cycle of PhD Programmes: Scholarships both on general and on specific themes are available, in accordance with what is specified in the call for admission. 6. Contents of PhD Programme 6.1 Requirements for the attainment of the title: The attainment of the PhD title in Preservation of the Architectural Heritage requires a study and research activity of at least three years equivalent to full time study, research and development of PhD thesis. The PhD in Preservation of the Architectural Heritage foresees (minimum 30) credits from PhD level courses to be acquired as indicated in the following paragraph 6.3. Acquisition of additional credits can be achieved by attending specialized courses relevant to individual PhD theses. 6.2 Development of the research and of the PhD thesis The aim of the PhD programmes of Politecnico di Milano is the development in the candidates of a research-oriented mind-set, with expertise and skills in a specific research topic. To develop a research-oriented mind-set, the candidates have to acquire the capability of problemsolving in complex context, included a deep analysis of the problem, the identification of an original solution and the capability of evaluating a solution and its applicability in given contexts. These skills provide the PhD candidates with major opportunities of development in their research both in the academic field and in public and private organisations. The main objective is the development of an original research contribution. The PhD thesis has to contribute to increase the knowledge in the research field of the candidate. Besides, it has to be coherent with the research topics developed in the department, in which the PhD Programme chosen by the candidate is carried out. The PhD research will be developed according to the guideline of a supervisor, who supports the candidate in the setting-out and in the everyday activities regarding the development of the thesis. The supervisor does not have to be a member of the Professors Board and can also belong to an institution different from Politecnico di Milano. The supervisor can be supported by one or more cosupervisors. To develop the capability of carrying out research activities, the candidate will have to attend the courses according to the PhD programme, defined for his/her study plan and pass them with a positive evaluation.
For each candidate admitted to the programme, a tutor, belonging to the Board of Professors, is appointed. The tutor supervises and supports the candidate him/her-self in the overall training path. The supervisor and the tutor can coincide. The choice of the courses will be overseen by the tutor, and it will be formalized in a study plan and approved by the Coordinator of the PhD Programme. Other activities for the development of own personal skill and research expertise are encouraged during the PhD path. The candidate has to acquire the capability to present and discuss his/her work in his/her research community. Consequently both the participation to international conferences and publication of the research results in international magazines with review are encouraged. The candidates are also encouraged to carry out part of their research activities in contact with other research groups in their interest field, preferably abroad. Research visits of at least three months are strongly encouraged at research groups through which the candidate can acquire further skills to develop his/her research work and the thesis. The duration of the programme is normally three years. 6.3 Objectives and general framework of the teaching activities The PhD Programmes and the PhD School can activate teaching forms of various kind and of different value (courses, seminars, project workshops, laboratories). All the activities will aim at: creating the starting knowledge common to the PhD programme; examining the basic research issues (problems, theories, research methods) which represent the founding element of the PhD Programme and which identify clearly its cultural position; deepening in a specialist way some research issues connected with the problems developed in the thesis. Lessons are usually in English language, except when indicated otherwise. At least one path thoroughly in English language is foreseen in the PhD Programme. Some teaching activities provide with the rights to acquire ECTS credits (structured teaching activities); other activities, typically specialised and for which it is difficult to evaluate the learning and its quantification, fall within the scientific activities of which the Board of Professors takes into account in the overall evaluation, but the value of which is not quantified in ECTS. Courses are organized in a variable number of lectures and seminars and complemented by study visits. Seminars are organized by the professors in charge and have a systematic presence of lecturers from other Italian or foreign Universities in order to allow PhD candidates to acquire research knowledge in the various disciplines dealing with architectural and cultural heritage. In case of lectures held in a language other than English, the PhD course will organize a consecutive or simultaneous translation into English. 31st CYCLE DOCTORAL COURSES HERITAGE PRESERVATION CULTURE AND PRACTICE Carolina Di Biase (Politecnico di Milano) In collaboration with Stefano Francesco Musso (Università di Genova)
The culture of preservation, in its own right a most important asset in the Italian panorama, evokes the stratification of theoretical directions and practices that, addressing the architectural and cultural heritage, mirror the relationship which institutions, companies and single individuals have gradually built with past architecture and the built environment. Based on the contribution from Italian and foreign scholars, the course is designed to offer significant examples of Italian and international research and experiences while investigating into present topics by focusing on innovative elements, recurring events, headways in methodology, experimentation and technical breakthroughs targeted to dealing with knowledge and the amelioration of the preservation practice. The next course will cover the following theme: Surfaces and Environments: Techniques of Study and Conservation. The theme of the course is architectural surfaces and how they are to be studied that is, the techniques available to analyse them and the methods devised for their conservation. The aim is to highlight the contribution made by a range of different disciplines. Such synergies, and the developments which result from them, affect our understanding of the technical procedures used in producing (and, then, in restoring) structures. They also facilitate identification of types of deterioration and their gravity, and our knowledge of the specific influence of modes of use and of internal and external environmental factors, together with how these might have changed over time. The themes covered will include the effects of changing weather conditions upon surface finishings and the control of air quality in particularly delicate environments (including those intended for the conservation and display of artistic and historic artefacts ). The course is scheduled to take place between late November 2015 and January DIAGNOSTICS OF MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES AND REHABILITATION OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS Claudio Chesi (Politecnico di Milano) The need to preserve the monumental heritage is strictly connected to the need to inspect the actual safety standards while identifying, when deemed necessary, suitable upgrade interventions. Due to the peculiarity of the national territory, today s Italian regulations prescribe that also structural safety be inspected for the effects of a seismic event, in addition to the static effects deriving from long-term loads. The next edition will address the following theme: Towers and bell towers: analyzing the current situation, safety margins, and possible interventions. Nowadays, it is generally recognized and is also reflected in building codes that the vulnerability of the monumental heritage has to be evaluated with respect to actions of both long duration and of seismic nature as well, which normally were not present in the original conceptual design. In the course, the fundamental aspects of the problem are presented with reference to masonry historical structures; subsequently, the problem of vulnerability analysis is discussed in relation to the specific typology of towers and bell towers. The course is scheduled to take place between 1 st and 2 nd semester.
METHODS AND THEMES OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH Marica Forni (Politecnico di Milano) in collaboration with Ornella Selvafolta and Maria Antonietta Crippa (Politecnico di Milano) The course will cover the theme: Exporting Architecture. Professional strategies, design cultures, building practices and new markets over the period of the eighteenth to twentieth century. In eighteenth-century Europe architects were already having to work in a market that was increasingly diversified, both in terms of demand and geographical range. Mobility and the exchange of idea and skills was extensive; in line with long-established traditions, these phenomena involved not only craftsmen but also architects, who were becoming ever more precisely defined figures of increasing specialisation. Modern professionals have to meet the new complexities of design by updating their language; expanding upon the instruments that played a part in their own training, they must engage with other traditions, practices and areas of knowledge. Even the strategies for establishing one s professional reputation change, with non-conventional means being employed to explore new channels for establishing contact with an ever more diversified clientele. Public institutions, private companies, insurance companies and banks all have new requirements that the architect must interpret. Working in places and contexts that are very different to those of their previous training and experience, these professionals must be able to export their skills whilst remaining continually open to engagement with the new. For a variety of reasons, therefore, outcomes reflect the result of very broad cultural exchange an exchange that is no longer limited to professional languages and expertise but also involves absorption of, and experimentation with, new models of organization and production. The course will begin in March 2016, with seminars on specific themes. CONSTRUCTION HISTORY Alberto Grimoldi (Politecnico di Milano) The course will cover the theme: On the Significance and Use of Construction History The material history of buildings studies how they were constructed and then used. The buildings themselves are the source material of their own history, but the study also exploits documentary sources that cast light upon the relations between methods of construction and use within the society that created them. Construction History comprises an ever wider range of themes and methods of approach. However, it does not consist in a mere description of this or that feature of the building, nor in a study of the technical literature of the past. The course will reflect upon the role of such construction history, upon the instruments at its disposal and the uses to which it can be put; thus it will look at the many possible interconnections and mutual relationships between documentary research and experimental enquiry. Within a limited number of seminars, it will examine the various kinds of study currently underway, above all those drawing up the fields of physics, chemistry ad mineralogy. A full understanding of our architectural heritage requires an ability to marshal the range of different points of view and instruments that belong to specific disciplines. Through a sizeable number of examples, the course aims to introduce doctorate students to this far from straightforward exercise.
Scheduled to take place in the second half of the academic year HISTORICAL TERRITORY AND LANDSCAPE Maurizio Boriani (Politecnico di Milano) in collaboration with Maria Cristina Giambruno The course will cover the theme: The cultural landscapes at UNESCO sites: protection, conservation and management challenges. The course is designed to extensively illustrate the policies implemented by UNESCO to the aim of identifying the cultural landscapes to be included in the World Heritage Convention. In addition to this, the theoretical principles and operating methodologies developed to the aim of protecting this heritage will be investigated while paying special attention to the sites identified to this aim in transition countries. Finally some significant case studies will be illustrated corroborated by insights and learning of interest to the Italian policy for the purpose of protecting and managing the landscape, irrespective of whether it has been included in the UNESCO WH list. Scheduled to take place in May June The tables here below show the foreseen path for the candidates and they refer only to coursework activities. At the same time, the programme foresees that the candidate is devoted to the research activity in a continuous way, following the lead of his/her supervisor and of the Board of Professor.
