3 Overview of Symposium: This one day symposium will focus on expanding the knowledge and expertise of the Life Care Planner. You will have the opportunity to hear from experts in their field of practice and earned recognized continuing education credits. The symposium will focus specifically on professional and ethical issues for the Life Care Planner. The format of this year s symposium will end with a new and exciting twist you won t want to miss! Rise & Shine Breakfast Prosthetic Workshop (Optional) Jump start your day with Certified Prosthetist Mr. Bill Truppe. Sockets, liners and sleeves oh my. understanding prosthetic supplies, components and replacements are essential to preparing the life care plan. This interactive workshop is an opportunity to explore the latest advancements of limb replacements with a focus on considerations relevant to the individualized life care plan. For an additional $40, participants may attend this workshop and enjoy a hot nutritious breakfast. Key Note Address with Dr. Paul Deutsch. Dr. Deutsch was the first to establish the basic standards, principles, tenets and methodologies of life care planning. Join us as he takes us on a journey through the evolution of life care planning. With a look at the past and the development of guidelines and standards, we can gain a deeper understanding of the importance of the more stringent and meaningful foundations and standards of today. A dynamic, and highly experienced array of presenters will be available throughout the day, including: Dr. Michael MacDonald, Psychologist, Dr. Keith Sequeira, Physiatrist, Ms. Karen Dalton, Chartered Professional Accountant, and Ms. Carol Bierbier, Certified Life Care Planner. The final stage of the Symposium will conclude with a bit of a new twist. Law firms both plaintiff and defense will demonstrate through acting out various ethical scenarios. Dr. Paul Deutsch 9:45-10:30am 10:30-11:00am 11:00-12:00pm Adding Up the Numbers: This presentation will address the methodology utilized to value the costs included in a Life Care Plan, including the various treatments of contingency costs and the common issues / pitfalls identified during the valuation process. Recent trends in litigation, the theory of damages as it relates to a Life Care Plan and the relationship between the Life Care Plan and the Economic Loss report will also be discussed. Networking Break ABI Future Care Costing a physician s perspective: This presentation will provide a brief overview of long term prognosis of brain injury; discuss balance between basic and cadillac type reports, as well as address optimal report styles. Dr. Sequeira will also speak to defining reasonable vs necessary vs not appropriate. Ms. Karen Dalton, CPA Dr. Keith Sequeira, Physiatrist 12:00-1:00pm Working Lunch - Ethical Situational Discussion All 1:00-2:00pm 2:00-3:00pm 3:00-3:15pm 3:15-4:45pm Eyes Wide Open: Psychology, Pain and Rehabilitation in your Life Care Plan Come prepared to have your eyes opened as we tackle these essential rehabilitation topics in the creation of a life care plan: new DSM5 diagnostic criteria; the role of long-term stress, loss and resilience on recovery; determining long-term rehab needs; and types of psychology treatment and how they work. The Life Care Planner As An Expert And The Duty To The Courts: The presentation will look at the role of the Life Care Planner in assisting the courts to arrive at a necessary decision. The basic tenants of Life Care Planning and will discuss the accepted process for formulating and quantifying recommendations for individuals who have sustained traumatic injuries. The importance of preparing a defensible and supported plan from both the plaintiff and defence perspective will be studied. Concepts such as objectivity, reasonableness, and scope of practice will be examined in the context of relevant court decisions and their impact on Life Care Planning in Ontario. 6 Speakers Prosthetics Workshop Mr. Bill Truppe, CP (c) Certified Prosthetist Mr. Bill Truppe has been working in the prosthetic field for over forty years. He was Canadian Board Certified in 1978 and over the years has made prosthetics out of wood,laminated plastics,titanium and carbon graphite. The Evolution of the Life Care Plan Dr. Paul Deutsch Dr. Deutsch, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education with a specialization in Rehabilitation. He has 40 years in the field of Rehabilitation and has been in private practice since June 1, He is a Board Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, Board Certified Case Manager and Certified Life Care Planner. Dr. Deutsch is a Fellow of the International Academy of Life Care Planners and is licensed in the State of Florida under Chapter 491 of the Psychology Practices Act as a Mental Health Counselor, (FL MH# ). He specializes in working with catastrophic disabilities resulting from either a birth or traumatic onset. Dr. Deutsch is best known for having developed the basic principles, tenets, methodologies and processes of Life Care Planning. He first published on Life Care Planning as a fundamental tool of Case Management in his 1981, M. and Raffa, Fred, Mathew Bender and Company, 1981, Lexus Nexus 2003). Dr. Deutsch has contributed twelve volumes and more than ninety-five peer reviewed journal articles and chapter contributions including A Guide to Rehabilitation, (Deutsch, Paul M. and Sawyer, Horace, 1985 Mathew Bender, 2003 AHAB Press) and Innovations in Head Injury Rehabilitation (Deutsch, Paul M. and Fralish, A Kathleen, 1986 Mathew Bender and 2003 AHAB Press). His work has been fundamental in the development of life care planning as a trans-disciplinary subspecialty throughout rehabilitation. Dr. Deutsch s experience in rehabilitation and research not only spans many years but also many cultures and continents. He worked several years on Brain Injury research at the First Moscow Medical Center in the Former Soviet Union and has extensive experience consulting on many areas of disability and rehabilitation throughout Europe as well as China and South Africa. Dr. Deutsch holds an appointment as a Courtesy Faculty Member, Department of Rehabilitation Counseling, University of Florida; a Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation in the Department of Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University; and is lead faculty in the life care planning program within Kaplan Universities HealthCare Pathways Program. He has remained active in research efforts and in the past few years helped to spearhead the formation of the Foundation for Life Care Planning Research. He is a recipient of the 1988 and 2006 Alumni of the Year Award of the College of Health Related Professions at the University of Florida and the 1993 Educator of the Year Award from the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals. In 2004, the Life Time Achievement Award in Life Care Planning was presented to Dr. Deutsch at the International Symposium of Life Care Planning, for his contributions to the field. In 2007, he was presented with a Life Time Achievement Award in Rehabilitation from the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals. Adding Up the Numbers Ms. Karen Dalton, CPA Karen is a partner of Hoare Dalton which has been providing litigation accounting support and business valuation services primarily to the legal profession for 17 years. Karen is certified as specialist in investigative and forensic accounting by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario and is certified in financial forensics by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Karen attained an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree and a Masters in Business Administration from Western University. Karen is a Chartered Professional Accountant Chartered Accountant and a chartered Business Valuator. Karen is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Dale Brain Injury Association. Eyes Wide Open: Psychology, Pain and Rehabilitation in your Life Care Plan Dr. Michael MacDonald Dr. MacDonald is a psychologist with a special interest in health and rehabilitation. He is particularly interested in helping people cope with physical health problems and the many stresses that can be caused by medical illness and injuries. He has completed a four-year degree at the University of Toronto, Canada. He then went on to complete his Masters and Doctorate (Ph.D.) degrees in Clinical Psychology at the Western University, London, Ontario. Currently in addition to his clinical work, Dr. MacDonald also holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Western Ontario. After graduation, Dr. MacDonald was a team member with the Multidisciplinary Pan Program, St. Joseph s Health Care in London, Ontario, treating clients with serious chronic pain and other disabling illnesses such as stroke and amputations. 6

7 Following this he started private practice along side his wife of 25 years. MacDonald Bryant has helped thousands of patients deal with injuries and losses from motor vehicle and work related accidents. He is the Author of the book, Unbelievable Pain Control: How to recover and heal from Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia, and his pride and joy is their daughter who they adore. ABI Future Care Costing a Physician s Perspective Dr. Keith Sequeira Dr. Sequeira is a graduate of the University of Toronto and completed his residency at the Albany Medical Centre in New York where he was chief resident during his final year. He completed a fellowship in electrodiagnostic and sport medicine at Michigan State University. Dr. Sequeira is currently Associate Medical Director of the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program and Medical Director of the Acquired Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program at Parkwood Hospital in London, Ontario. He holds an appointment at Western University as an Associate Professor and Residency Program Director in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He runs spasticity, brain injury, spinal cord rehabilitation and pain clinics at Parkwood Hospital and is actively involved in spinal cord and brain injury research, medical school education and has been in active practice for over 10 years. The Life Care Planner as an Expert and The Duty to The Courts Ms. Carol Beirbrier, Founder, CBA (Carol Bierbrier & Associates), B.O.T.(c), OT Reg. (Ont), CCRC Certified Life Care Planner Carol Bierbrier is founder and principal of her firm, CBA (Carol Bierbrier & Associates), a practise that has developed specialization in the field of future care costing. A graduate of McGill University, Carol has worked as a registered Occupational Therapist for over 30 years. She is a member of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists, is a Canadian Certified Life Care Planner, and a Canadian Certified Rehabilitation Counsellor (CCRC). Carol has practiced as an Occupational Therapist in a variety of clinical settings, including in hospital and community based rehabilitation for both adults and children, dealing with physical, neurological and psychiatric impairment. Over the last 15 years Carol has been in private sector community rehabilitation providing services to the medicallegal community. She has developed extensive expertise in the quantification of damages for personal injury actions and wrongful deaths, and has been accepted as an expert in her field and has successfully testified at numerous trials in the Superior Court of Justice. She has presented at a number of conferences on this topic.interactive Presentations on Ethical Challenges. Life Care Planning Challenges Law Firms to be announced Moderator Ms. Agnes Agnelli, OT, Managing Partner, DMARehability Agnes graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1987, beginning her career as Occupational Therapist, working in a general staff position in Toronto. She continued to pursue learning opportunities by moving to a large teaching hospital in Toronto. Upon returning to London, Agnes became the sole occupational therapist for The Arthritis Society in London, and then transitioned into plastics position at University Hospital. In 1993, she began Rehability Occupational Therapy as a sole practitioner. Her passion became working in a clinical role, assisting injured individuals while dealing in a third party sector. Recognizing a need for multidisciplinary services and programs, her strong commitment to leadership and growth, Rehability and Disability Management Associates merged operations in 1998 becoming DMARehability. Agnes is currently Co- Founder and Board Member of HABIT (Helping Acquired Brain Injury Treatment) as well as being a Director with the London Brain Injury Association. Moderator Ms. Cheryl Scollard, Director Marketing & Operations, DMARehability Cheryl is a graduate of Fanshawe College s, (1984), Developmental Service Worker Program, and studied Cognitive Psychological at the University of Waterloo (1988). She has studied and is certified in the Practice of Reality Therapy Counselling. Cheryl has over 20 years of community based Case Management, Vocational Rehabilitation and Business Development experience working in the health and disability management and insurance industry. Her current role at DMARehability is to assist in the growth and development of existing and new business, provide leadership, support and guidance to the overall growth of the rehabilitation team and organization. Cheryl currently sits as a Board of Director on the Sarnia Brain Injury Association, and is a volunteer with the London Brain Injury Association, Conference Planning Committee. 7
