MP) OVERALL AIM OF EVALUATION Københavns Universitet 24/ Erik Frøkjær og Kasper Hornbæk Bilag til Det Fælles Usabilityprojekt The user interface that you are going to evaluate is the mobile phone 7210 from Nokia ( This phone is currently in stores in Denmark. However, usability specialist Niels Ebbe Jacobsen from Nokia is interested in identifying usability problems with the interface, so that future versions of this and other phones can be made more usable. As Niels Ebbe Jacobsen has been designing the evaluation with colleagues from London, this document is in English. The evaluation aims at identifying usability problems particularly in the Phonebook application, but is also related to Call Handling, Calendar, Services and Games. Problems may be identified on a general level related to the User Interface (UI) Style, on application level or may be specifically related to inappropriate UI design or even insufficient labelling of functions. USERS The users are expected to have mobile phone experience, but not specifically Nokia phone experience. Thus, a typical user for the target group would have had for example a Motorola mobile phone for a year of so. The users would not be particular technical minded but curious enough to learn features when needed. The target age group would be Note that you should take this information into account when evaluating and when finding persons for the think aloud test. SCENARIOS Below are 11 scenarios of use that you should focus on in the evaluation; of course you are welcome to focus broader on the functions mentioned above in the aim of the evaluation. The scenarios are also available from page 7 in a format easier to use in the evaluation. In some scenarios, you need to simulate calling or being called. We suggest that you call the number 1864 (a phone-newspaper) to do that simulation. 1

2 # Scenario 1 Ann has just purchased a new mobile. She immediately inserted her SIM card from her old mobile into the new. She checks that all her phone numbers are accessible from the new phone. She discovers that the number to the tennis club desk is missing. She adds it again calling it Tennis Club with the number Ann has received an SMS from Joe describing Jack s new mobile number. Ann already has Jack s private number on her mobile. She wants to add Jack s new mobile number as well. 3 The following day Ann meets a new guy also called Jack in the tennis club. He is playing the same level as she does. They plan to play a match some time next week, so they exchange numbers. In order to distinguish between the new guy and her coach (called Jack Hall) she adds the coach s last name to the already existing entry and adds the new guy s full name, number and address (Jack Straw, , jack.straw@fastmail.com) to her mobile. 4 Ann s good friend Sally, who is now living in the UK, called her on the mobile while she was playing tennis. Ann wants to call back, but waits until she gets home because it is too expensive to call the UK on her current mobile phone scheme. To get the number she finds Sally s entry in the phonebook and dials the number manually on her landline phone. 5 Ann read in some marketing material for Nokia 7210 that she could download new games to her phone. She explores the possibilities and attempts to download a free trail version of a bowling game on 6 Ann s sister, Sue, wants to try out Ann s new phone, as Sue also considers buying a new phone. They decide to swap phones for a day. Ann is worried that some of her information might get lost again, so she wonders whether she can backup the information on the SIM card to the phone before they swap phones. 7 Joe calls Ann from the airport telling her that the coach s number he sent her by SMS was wrong. Ann asks Joe to send her the correct number on an SMS, but Joe replies that he is about to board the flight so she has to write it down or add it to the phonebook while they are talking. Ann didn t know it was possible to change a number while being in a call, but this is most convenient for her, since she is shopping and doesn t have anything to write on apart from the phone. Joe says that Jack s correct number is She corrects the number while Joe is still on the line. After having completed the task Ann tells Joe to give regards to Sally if they meet each other in the UK. 8 Joe is going to the UK, so he asks Ann to send him Sally s number, so that he can give her a call and perhaps visit her if he gets some time off between business meetings. 2

3 9 Jack stops as tennis coach in the club. Ann wishes to get rid of his information from the phonebook. 10 Ann decides that she wants to be able to call Joe easier than by finding him in the phonebook. She explores the phone to find something that can help her with quick access to Joe. 11 Peter calls Ann right after he has left Heathrow airport. Peter wants to schedule a meeting about a new project. Ann keeps her updated calendar on his mobile. Peter asks if she is available for two hours some afternoon in the coming week. Ann asks Peter to stay on the line while she checks her availability on his mobile s calendar application. Ann then gets back to Peter saying that Tuesday from fits her well. After the call Ann books the meeting on her mobile calendar app. FUNCTIONS TO BE USED IN THE SCENARIOS The scenarios are intended to test the following functions. This information indicates one way of solving the tasks in the scenarios. # Testing 1 Adding name and number 2 Look in Messages Inbox. Use Detail and multiple names per number 3 Editing name, Adding name, number and 4 Reading information from Phonebook app. 5 Service settings, Services, Java download 6 Copy 7 Accessing Menu and Phonebook in an in-call situation 8 Send business card 9 Delete 10 Speed dial 11 Accessing Menu and Calendar in an in-call situation SETTING UP THE PHONE FOR EVALUATION Below is described the steps necessary to set up the phone for evaluation (it is especially critical for Think Aloud evaluations). It is your responsibility that the phone is set up correctly. Please check so both before starting the evaluation and before returning the phone to Erik Frøkjær or Kasper Hornbæk. (a) The following entries are stored to SIM (OBS: it is important that all entries are stored in SIM, use the Copy function). Check by going through all names. For each name, check that the phone number is correct and that no other information is available for that name except the phone number. The numbers are: Ann ; Ashraf A ; Christian ; Danielle S ; Danielle U ; Jack ; 3

4 Joe ; Mom ; Peter ; Ralf ; Richard ; Sally ; Simon ; Tim (b) The following SMS from Joe should be in the Messages Inbox: Jack our tennis coach has got a new mobile number, Good to have when you re delayed :-). If the message is not there, send a new text-message to the phone (the phone number you get on a sheet of paper). (c) The following meetings are scheduled for the coming week: Monday 13-16: Meet Dave about new recruitment; Tuesday PM: Reception at Info Enterprise; Wednesday 9: Brunch with team members. Delete any additional meetings. (d) The following settings should be in place. Names>Settings>Memory in use: Phone and SIM ; Names>Settings>Phone book view: Name list ; Settings>Phone settings>languages: Dansk. (e) You should make sure to delete any solutions to the scenarios that may be left in the phone. This includes (numbers correspond to scenarios): (1) delete any number called Tennis Club; (2) delete Jack s or Jack Hall s - mobile number; (3) Delete Jack Straw, rename Jack Hall to Jack; (5) remove the Bowling game from Programmer; remove any WAP settings. (6) copy all numbers back to SIM and remove any numbers on the phone; (7)-(9) see if Jack is in the phone book with the number given above; (10) remove Joe and add his number again to delete the speed call function; (11) remove the meeting on Tuesday, if any. USER GUIDES Nokia 7210 User Guide in Danish is available at There is also a copy available when you pick up the phone. PROCEDURE Phones are handed out at Erik Frøkjær s office, DIKU S018. You also need to deliver back the phone to this office. It is your responsibility that you pick up and return the phone here. Upon picking up a phone you sign a receipt and until you return the phone we consider you responsible for the phone. We will provide offices at DIKU in which you can perform the evaluation. Your office number will be given to you when you arrive and you have to perform the evaluation in this office at DIKU. In case you have to share an office, please avoid disturbing each other. The table below gives the times in which you can use the phones; the cells in the table are referring to your group number. Note that each group has two time slots in which they have access to a phone. Please also note that within a group you have to make arrangements as to who uses the phone when. We also advice you to individually pick up and return a phone, as you is personally responsible for the phone. 4

5 Note that you must hand back the phones before and o clock, respectively. Please respect these time limits, as any delay can cause other students and the whole experiment great trouble. Upon picking up the phone, you also receive a users guide and a sheet of paper describing the phone number used for calling the phone and the pin code for the phone. In case of repeated problems with the phone, you can call Erik Frøkjær s office, SETTING UP WAP The next page contains an instruction from the service provider about how to set up WAP. You can assume that you subscribe to a normal WAP package. 5

Gå ind i SMS menuen på din mobiltelefon 2. Gå dernæst ind i Skriv beskeder 3. Skriv "wap forbindelsestype telefontype", f.eks.: "WAP GPRS T68" eller "WAP GPRS 8310" og tryk send. Send beskeden til 767 (står for SMS på din mobiltelefon) Du vil dernæst modtage din WAP-opsætning. WAP-opsætningen kan anvendes med Nokia og Ericsson telefoner.
