2 I. The Engineering CAD System The Engineering CAD System used by the City and County of Denver Department of Public Works employs networked client-server technology providing file, printer and plotter sharing. Design software is installed on each individual computer. Software Applications and Versions Drafting Software AutoCAD is the drafting software package used by the City and County of Denver Department of Public Works. All drawings created by or provided to the City and County of Denver Department of Public Works shall be dwg format. Design Software Autodesk Civil 3D is the design software used by the City and County of Denver Department of Public Works. AutoCAD Civil 3D provides the user with tools to create and analyze a surface; develop a site; model roads and pipe networks; work with survey data; and other design tasks. Software Customization The City and County of Denver Department of Public Works has developed a workspace to be used with AutoCAD Civil 3D. This workspace consist of folders containing resource files, dwg files, custom tool palettes, etc. that enable the user to be efficient in creating and maintaining project design files. Network Connections To provide consistent operation for CCD users, computers are connected to certain disk drives where software licensing and project data reside. The CCD custom workspace requires that consistent network connection paths be set up. The following connection, or mapped network drive, has been created for CCD Autodesk Civil 3D work. Drive Share Name Description Y: CAD Tips on PWSFS02\Batch\ AutoCAD Civil 3D root directory The CCD Autodesk Civil 3D standards folders are located under Y:\Computer Tips\AutoCAD\Civil3D. 1

3 CADD Standards Directory Structure The CCD Autodesk Civil 3D root directory PWSFS02\BATCH\Computer Tips\AutoCAD\Civil3D is the repository for all files that define and support CCD CAD standards. The files may be referenced or copied to project directories by users. They are maintained and modified only by the CAD Manager. Standards Support Files AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D support files include template files, block files, standard drawings and other support files. The files in the support directories have been created for the design and drafting techniques used by CCD. Folder Name \Configuration Setup \Standards-Global Description Workspace support files. 4 Loading Civil 3D Configuration The following procedures need to be followed in order to load the AutoCAD Civil 3D configuration on a user's computer running AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 on Windows XP operating system. The CCD Civil 3D standards reference the Y:\ drive connection to locate the support and CADD specific files. The necessary files to load the CCD Workspace to a user's computer are located in these folders. Loading CCD Workspace The following steps need to be completed while the CCD user is logged onto their computer. Run the batch file Civ3D09_Setup-XP.dat. This file is located at Y:\Computer Tips\AutoCAD\Civil3D\Configuration Setup. Loading CCD 1. Start AutoCAD Civil 3D The following message will appear 3. Click OK. 4. Start the Options dialog box. This can be done by typing "options" in the text window. 3

5 5. Select the Profiles tab and then the Import button. 6. If there is a CCD_Profile available and set current, set the <<Unnamed Profile>> current. 7. Click the Import button and select Y:\Computer Tips\AutoCAD\Civil3D\Configuration Setup\CCD_PROFILE.arg file. 8. Click Yes to replace the existing CCD_PROFILE. 9. Click the Set Current button. 10. Select OK to load settings. 4

6 Activate CCD Workspace Once the CCD profile has been loaded, the user can then activate the CCD Workspace by selecting it from the Workspace Settings area. Refer to the CCD-CAD_STDS_Manual_Draft.doc for more details specific to the CCD Tool Palette. 5

7 II. Drawing and Design Files The CCD workflow requires graphic and design data be created into multiple design files during the course of the project. These design files will have standard, informative, and unique names. The CCD standardized file naming convention allows the user to identify each particular file type, and the type of information in the file. Design Files The creation of any new drawing will be based on the use of pre-established CCD template files. The CCD template file will provide pre-established layers, text styles, dimension styles and other information to assist in completing drawings so they will meet CCD standards. Template Files Template files are AutoCAD dwg files saved as dwt files. These files have been customized with layer symbology which enable the user to begin working without having to setup a standard file. Template files have been created for each group and can be found at: Y:\Computer Tips\AutoCAD\Civil3D\Standards Global\ AutoCAD\Templates. Base Files Each project sheet file will be created from a CCD base file. Base files can be found at: Y:\Computer Tips\AutoCAD\Civil3D\Standards- Global\AutoCAD\Drawing Files.
