12 bstract lthough GPS antennas are commonly used for vehicle applications, their on-vehicle gain patterns are not known well. he goal of this work is to investigate the GPS passive antenna performance at its actual, on-vehicle mounting locations on the IP (Dashboard).

13 GPS GLOBL POSIIONING SYS he principle of position determination by GPS and the accuracy of the positions strongly depend on the nature of the signals. variety of criteria was considered in the development of a suitable signal structure. In consequence the GPS signal is quite complex and offers the possibility of determining the following parameters: one-way (passive) position determination, exact distance and direction determination (Doppler effect), transmission of navigation information, simultaneous receiving of several satellite signals, provision of corrections for ionospheric delay of signals and insusceptibility against interferences and multi path effects. In order to fulfill all these requirements, the receiving signal needs to deliver all the information, and this is achieved with a good antenna with a proper placement in the vehicle.

16 DO DSIGN OF XPRINS he design of experiments (DO) refers to a process of planning experience in an appropriate manner and organized, where data can be analyzed by statistical methods resulting in valid and objective conclusions. n experiment can be seen as a test, or as a series of tests in which purposeful changes are applied to the input variables of the process or system, and then observes and identifies the changes in output variables.

18 Genetic lgorithm Genetic lgorithm (G) optimizers are part of a class of optimization techniques called stochastic optimizers. hey do not use the information from the experiment or the cost function to determine where to further explore the design space. Instead, they use a type of random selection and apply it in a structured manner. he random selection of evaluations to proceed to the next generation has the advantage of allowing the optimizer to jump out of a local minima at the expense of many random solutions which do not provide improvement toward the optimization goal. s a result, the G optimizer will run many more iterations and may be prohibitively slow. he Genetic lgorithm search is an iterative process that goes through a number of generations (see picture below). In each generation some new individuals (Children / Number of Individuals) are created and the grown population participates in a selection (natural-selection) process that in turn reduces the size of the population to a desired level (Next Generation / Number of Individuals). When a smaller set of individuals must be created from a bigger set, the G selects individuals from the original set. During this process, better fit (in relation to the cost function) individuals are preferred. In the elitist selection, simply the best so many individuals are selected, but if you turn on the roulette selection, then the selection process gets relaxed. n iterative process starts selecting the individuals and fills up the resulting set, but instead of selecting the best so many, we use a roulette wheel that has for each selectioncandidate divisions made proportional to the fitness level (relative to the cost function) of the candidate. his means that the fitter the individual is, the larger the probability of his survival will be.
