4 WELCOME Erasmus University College Brussels (Erasmushogeschool Brussel, EhB) is a Flemish higher education institution in Brussels, offering a wide range of professionally based BA programmes. Furthermore, it houses two prestigious Schools of Arts (RITCS Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound and the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel), both strongly tied in with the artistic scene in Brussels and providing artistic BA and MA programmes. Our alumni enter the labour market fully prepared. All our programmes are developed in close interaction with relevant external stakeholders to ensure the utmost relevance. During their studies, students at EhB are involved in ongoing research as much as possible, fostering an attitude of innovation and inquisitiveness. Artistic research groups within the Schools of Arts carry out artistic and academic research, while several Centers of Expertise engage in practice based research, often multidisciplinary in character. Since we take our students well-being to heart, we have developed student support services on each campus for easy and convenient access. At EhB, we strongly believe in international experiences. A wide range of grants is available to students and staff to participate in international mobility programmes for study or traineeship and in international projects, both inside and outside the EU. After all, is there a better way to develop a professional network and establish job opportunities internationally? 10 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY Bachelor Applied Computer Science (Dig-X) Bachelor Multimedia & Communication Technology (Multec) Coached by a team of experts, bachelor students in Multimedia & Communication Technology know how to set about their work and team up to create new multimedia products and services. Their mission? To develop their own interaction design ideas in our cutting-edge MediaLab and FabLab. The Applied Computer Science bachelor prepares students in the core areas of IT: infrastructure, programming fundamentals, mobile & web development, business IT & integration, information management and software engineering. The curriculum strenghtens communication skills, encourages group dynamics and is organized in close cooperation with the industry. Our programme will help develop analytical thinking and applied skills by blending theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. RESEARCH The focus of the Design and Technology for Mobile and Wearable research is to integrate mobile and wearable technologies into business processes. Researchers and students are involved in the technical and graphic design of applications, often designed at request of SME s and manufactured in EhB s MediaLab and FabLab. Such a close cooperation between the private sector and the Design and Technology Department guarantees updated and innovative curricula and delivers labour market ready students.

12 LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Bachelor Landscape and Garden Architecture Always wanted to shape the world around you? Then join our bachelor programme in Landscape Architecture. Recognized by the International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA-Europe), it focuses on landscaping green and urban settings as well as gardens, with particular emphasis on sustainable designs. We offer programmes to both regular student and career switchers. RESEARCH The Tuin + (Garden + ) research programme is a centre of expertise on private and semi-private gardens and urban landscapes. Through practice-oriented design research on gardens and landscapes, the research aims to develop policy recommendations as well as design and management strategies. Providing information, advice, support and training for professionals in design, construction and management is also an objective. Lastly, the programme also strives to co-create awareness campaigns and pilot projects on gardens and landscape. twelve

We sure think so, that is why we count on simulation training in our Health Care programmes: a powerful and evidence-based teaching method for students and healthcare professionals. In our brand-new Skills and Simulation Centre, student nurses, midwives, doctors and specialists train essential competences in a lifelike yet safe simulation environment to be optimally prepared for subsequent traineeships in real medical settings. RESEARCH Meeting the upcoming needs of the health care system is what Brussels Integrated Care is all about. Researchers with different expertise (Nursing, Midwifery and Nutrition & Dietetics) bundle their forces to tackle issues such as the accessibility of health care, integrated health care systems, multi-disciplinary professional teams and patient oriented care. The Nano Medicines research strives mainly to develop cancer treatments in a combined effort of pharmaceutical and biotechnical approaches. It goes without saying that other possible applications of this innovative approach are being considered as well. thirteen

14 MANAGEMENT, MEDIA AND SOCIETY Bachelor Communication Management Bachelor Hotel Management Bachelor Idea and Innovation Management Bachelor Journalism Bachelor Office Management Bachelor Social Work Bachelor Tourism and Leisure Management The department Management, Media and Society is located in the trendy Dansaert neighborhood, known for its fashion, design, vintage shops and cozy bars and terraces. Seven undergraduate programmes are offered in the multidisciplinary fields of management, media or social change and development. Our teaching philosophy is based on teamwork and our study programmes are oriented on problem solving case studies and real company briefings. All undergraduate programmes are designed to give students a broad training, preparing them to work in a wide variety of organizations. Students develop strategic, creative and management skills and attitudes. Work placements offered to them throughout the programme allow them to taste a wide range of professional experience.

15 RESEARCH The Centre of Expertise Applied Futures Research Open Time seeks to open up methods and instruments for futures research for application in diverse domains. Futures thinking is essential for policy and decision making in business, in non-profit organizations and government. Our multidisciplinary research is set up with the programmes Tourism and Recreation Management, Communication Management and Idea and Innovation Management and is currently conducting case studies in the areas of leisure, municipal governance, culture and entertainment. Professional competences of managers and other professionals working in offices and hotels need to be permanently adjusted towards labour market needs. The research project aims to create tools for workplace and policy innovation in the hotel and office management sector.

16 TEACHER TRAINING AND EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION & CARE Bachelor Early Childhood Education and Care Bachelor Preschool Education Bachelor Primary Education Bachelor Secondary Education Shaping tomorrow s society requires competent, passionate and dedicated educational professionals. The workplaces of our future teachers and pedagogical coaches offer a window on Brussels, a multilingual and multicultural metropole which is a challenge as well as a source of inspiration. Our focus is the particular skill set a teacher or pedagogical coach in an urban context needs: intercultural awareness and sensitivity, intercultural communication, teaching multilingual groups, awareness of poverty issues and building a network with different educational, social and cultural organizations in Brussels. RESEARCH The department s Centre of Expertise Urban Coaching and Education focuses explicitly on language, teaching methods, health issues and professional identity, in an urban context. The researchers provide evidence-based good practices for professionals in coaching and education. Based on this research, a new course module is currently being developed in collaboration with our Brussels Partners school network and will be open to incoming international students. sixteen The department has also started up Democratic Dialogue, a coaching project assisting schools in dealing with sensitive issues and intercultural communication.

18 KONINKLIJK CONSERVATORIUM BRUSSEL Bachelor Musical Bachelor and Master of Arts in Music Instrument / Voice Jazz & Light Music Conducting Composition Music Writing Music Teaching Certification Programme The Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (KCB) is first and foremost an artistic institute of higher education. Its music curricula and forms of examination are based on international standards and checked against the curricula of similar European institutions. The pool of carefully selected international students and guest professors, coming from over thirty countries, is the prime assurance for the internationalisation of its programmes. The Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel is located in the cultural heart of Brussels. The KCB contributes actively to and / or cooperates with the following high standing events: Queen Elisabeth Contest, Festival of Flanders, Festival of the Arts (KunstenfestivaldesArts), Ars Musica, Munt Opera House, Museum of Instruments (MIM), the fine arts museum BOZAR, Flagey initiative, the Goethe-institute, etc.

19 RESEARCH The artistic, scientific and practice based research at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel is fully integrated into the Music and Musical curricula. All education is research driven. Its objective is to educate high level musicians who are able to reflect critical upon their own musical practice. The following 6 research groups are led by senior researchers: Contemporary Performance Practice, Historical Informed Performance Practice, Musical Language, Artistic Research Practices, Culture, Music and Documentation Sciences and Technical Performing Arts. The research output is very diverse and can be the following: concerts, musical-performances, CD-recordings, compositions, lecture-recitals, articles in scientific journals, books, etc. The Arts Platform Brussels conducted within the University Association Brussels of which KCB and RITCS are members, stimulates and facilitates artistic research, specifically Ph.D. s in the Arts. It guarantees that each Ph.D. project is embedded in an adequate research environment.

20 BA Audiovisual Arts Cinematography Sound Editing Production Management Stage Management BA MA of Arts in Audiovisual Arts Documentary Film Film Scriptwriting Television Animation Film Radio BA MA of Arts in Drama Performing Direction, Scriptwriting Started in 1962 as a small pioneering school in audio-visual and performing arts, RITCS is now an internationally-celebrated institution. About 700 students take Bachelor and Master courses in the audiovisual or performing arts under the supervision of 150 artists, academic professors, tutors, assistants and visiting professors. Over the last half-century numerous well-known Belgian makers of film, animation film, television, radio and documentary as well as writers, stage actors and stage directors, studied at RITCS. The main focus at RITCS is the development of each student s own artistic path, through which an individual artistic idiom, style and theme can emerge. Courses stimulate dialogue between students and their artistic teachers via tutorials, workshops, studio sessions and master-classes against a backdrop of theoretical courses in philosophy, culture, art, politics, media and society. The ideal setting for all that? Brussels multicultural, multilingual and multidimensional character. RESEARCH The Centre of Expertise for Technical Performing Arts has grown organically from the research- and education projects of the stage management department of RITCS. Its research focuses on the topics of Art and technology, Health, Safety and Sustainability, History of technical theatre and Competence and training methodologies. The centre of expertise provides continuity in order to disseminate the results of research and to guarantee the cooperation with the industry, educational and research institutes, policymakers and international networks. Being part of reality rather than an observer of it, the expertise centre is a permanent contact point for the industry, training providers and policymakers. It aims to be part of reality rather than observing it. It also functions as an official Assessment Centre for stage technicians in Flanders, providing them with certificates based on their work experience and practice assessments.

22 PRACTICE BASED RESEARCH In order to reinforce its practice based research, EhB established eight centres of expertise which also function as scientific service centres that deal with specific requests and inquiries from both the private and public sector. The topics dealt with are multi-disciplinary and in line with research priorities set by local, national and European policymakers and funders. The centres of expertise are also directly linked to one or more study programmes and their activities generate a continuous added value for those programmes. Thanks to the low-threshold approach of these centres, students can take active involvement in the research process, by choosing their bachelor theses topic in line with the centres research themes or by assisting in contract research or service provision for organizations or enterprises under the supervision of the research staff. Besides practice oriented research carried out by the eight centres of expertise, the Schools of Arts also develop academic research in the Arts which leads to the allocation of Ph.D s. 24 INTERNATIONALISATION EhB s internationalisation policy is reflected both in its educational programmes as well as in its research. EhB is encouraging its students to go abroad for study or a traineeship. Today, 18% of the graduates enjoy an international experience abroad. It is clear that by 2020 EhB will have reached the EU- 20% mobility norm. Professors are stimulated as well to teach abroad at one of the 200 partner institutions in the Erasmus + framework. Annually, about 80 international students attend courses at EhB in the framework of Erasmus + programme. EhB is working hard to extend the number of its English modules in order to attract even more international students in the future. With regard to EhB s participation in European educational projects, EhB has built up solid cooperation throughout the years in the framework of the Tempus Programme with the North African region. EhB will continue its cooperation with this region in the framework of the new Erasmus + programme. Cooperation with other countries outside the EU such as DR Congo, Morocco and Brazil will be continued. Future partnerships are envisaged to be established with Cuba and Former Yugoslavia. Currently EhB is partner in several Structured Partnership Projects which will lead to new European modules, such as the International Forensic Research Module which will be soon offered as a postgraduate programme. EhB collaborates actively with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in the framework of the UAB (Universitaire Associatie Brussel). Furthermore, EhB is active partner of the Compostela Group of Universities (CGU). All departments are active member of various European thematic networks. 24
