1 MS-Word our functional multi-tool or our Swiss Army knife for semantic cross media publishing After self-publishing 1979 my first travel guide with a typewriter, I started book design with Word 2.0 in After writing plenty of simple macros by myself, I began 2007 to build up my own developing team working on a Travel Guide Operating System as some kind of CMS for print, ebook and mobile phones. Up until now, we have been build up a bundle of software modules as our production framework: Word Plug-Ins to automate print production. We were trapped in VBA, and started last year to move lines of code to C#, still in progress. Word OPS: Online Publishing System (means online with Word). This is a Word Ad-On for the semantic tagging feature, based on Custom XML, binding a unique ID to each tag. This module provides the main functionality of our framework. Early as 2007 we started to bind Unique ID s to custom XML to implement the mapping of Word content to a SQL database. This enables us to bind multiple metadata to any marked text. CGS: Collaborative Geo-Information System. With this web service, our travel guide authors have to prove (at home or on the road) the correct location of mentioned POIs in the travel guides on top of an OSM map or satellite view. Digital Publisher: This module merges the CGS information with the Word XML, including semantic tags. This takes place according to the rules of the Custom XML tags unique ID s identifiers for the ebook or App content. There is the option to generate an ebook container or a SQLite database for usage inside an App. App Production: Nokia (2008), iphone, Android, Windows Phone (2010). This year, we set up a continuous integration workflow, according our one source philosophy, it is based on.net/xamarin and covers iphone/android/windowsphone, in order to get our mmtravel App 3.0 ready for summer Michael Müller Verlag, MS Word - Cross Media Publishing 1

2 Round trip the one source philosophy - author - proof reading - design - PDF - print - app... and return the Word XML data to the author, preparing the next edition and updated App all with one source: Word XML. Over the years, we have become a team of 10 software engineers, developing and fine-tuning a large number of ambitious projects for a more and more seamless Round Trip production No InDesign - WHY? All of my travel guide competitors are working with InDesign, most of them hesitate to design new pages for each updated edition, but this stops the author from doing a good job. The author is only allowed to make minor corrections, which fit on the same page. Although some publishers export the InDesign work into Word to send the files for updating back to the author - these kind of guidebooks have a much simpler design than our products and all the metadata would be lost during transfer. 3 Content Management System for Word Publishing - the production of travel guides as print, ebooks and Apps at MMV The following screenshots will give you the idea how Michael Müller Verlag works. They demonstrate the very large and detailed toolsets for tagging and processing the text/photos into an ebook container or SQLite, or the design for publishing the printed guides. 4 Word OPS In the process of tagging, first a project file is created. This project file contains the list of the involved Word documents and some additional information for the book (e.g. title, author, ISBN, geographical center point,...). For every document a XML Schema is attached to use the CustomXML Feature of Word. When a tag is created, a Unique ID (GUID) is added as an attribute to that tag. Then it s possible to link that tag to an existing entry in the CGS database or create a new entry from within the OPS add-in. When saving the document, it is important to save it in the Word XML format, only then it can be used in the Digital Publisher tool. Michael Müller Verlag, MS Word - Cross Media Publishing 4
