2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The Bill Wilkerson Center is dedicated to helping individuals who are struggling with problems affecting their speech, language and hearing, which makes it difficult or impossible to communicate. We help these individuals reach their highest potential for a full and productive life through therapeutic intervention and cutting edge technology. Our mission is three fold, diagnosis and treatment, research, and education. The Center is a regional facility for the diagnosis and treatment of communication related disorders in children and adults, such as speech and language evaluations and screenings, hearing aid selection and management, and the treatment and rehabilitation programs for persons with brain injuries. Background Vanderbilt's Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, a regional facility for the diagnosis and treatment of communication and related disorders, is a part of the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences. More than 40 million Americans- over ten percent of the population-have a hearing, speech, language or cognitive disorders that impairs their ability to communicate with others. The Department is dedicated to helping these individuals reach their highest potential for a full and productive life. A half century has passed since Dr. Wesley Wilkerson, a prominent Nashville physician, saw a critical need for an institution that would provide rehabilitative services for persons with hearing and speech impairments and stand as a model for other facilities in the United States. The Bill Wilkerson Center, a memorial to Dr. Wilkerson's son who was killed in World War 11, opened in In 1997, the Bill Wilkerson Center merged with Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Department of Otolaryngology to become the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences, one of the world's premier integrated communication disorders centers. Impact The Center diagnoses and treats individuals with a wide range of communication-related diseases and disorders. These include deafness, autism, acquired brain injury, vocal disorders, speech and language delays, balance disorders, and conditions that affect the ability to communicate. The Center schedules approximately 60,000 outpatient visits each year in all age groups, races and income levels, in all types of communication disorders, and from almost every state in the union. Although it serves people of all ages, the Center's largest groups of clients are the very young and very old. Diseases and disordes such as chronic ear infections, hearing loss, language disorders, and autism have a serious impact on children's educational, social, and emotional development. The medical and therapeutic intervention provided at the Center is crucial to mitigating the effects of these problems for hundred of children each year. The problems faced by the elderly who are treat at the Center are also serious. Hearing loss, laryngectomy and stroke can all take a significant toll on personal and family life. The treatments at the Center provide independence, help alleviate depression, and improve quality of life. Needs We are in need of full tuition scholarships for the Mama Lere Hearing School within the NCCDFC. The school is the only option for children in middle Tennessee with hearing loss to receive intensive training in spoken language and part of the only comprehensive cochlear implant center in the state. The school has a critical need for scholarships to assist children whose families cannot afford the tuition. The Center opened an Autism Preschool in 2014 and there are families that need funding. The Center also need support for speech services to children not enrolled in the School 2

CEO Statement other organizations in the middle Tennessee area provide the broad range of unique services in communication disorders provided by the Bill Wilkerson Center. Examples of these services include augmentative communication evaluation and training, the full spectrum of cochlear implant pre-testing and postsurgical management, a communication-based preschool for children with autism spectrum disorders, feeding and swallowing treatment for premature infants and medically fragile children, and a host of other services for persons with acquired brain injury, fluency disorders, repaired cleft palate, age-related hearing loss, and many other communication problems. The Center is in the process of moving its services to a state-of-the-art facility on the campus of the Vanderbilt Medical Center. This facility has enabled the Center to start a new "Center within and Center": The National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication. This important expanded service will provide preschool classes to children with hearing loss with an emphasis on developing oral communication skills and literacy. The Center's therapeutic service delivery benefits enormously from its association with Vanderbilt's Department of Otolaryngology, and Vanderbilt's Hearing and Speech Sciences Graduate Studies and Research Programs. These programs together make up the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences, which is dedicated to providing not only hearing and speech therapy, but research, professional training, and medical and surgical intervention for ENT diseases. 4
