Representative Research Projects Principal investigator: The effects of antioxidants on cochlear mechanics. Used several physiological measures of outer hair cell activity (otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem responses, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials) to determine the site of action of N-acetylcysteine for both the auditory system and the vestibular system. Principal investigator: The effects of hazardous noise on the vestibular system. Determined if audiograms can predict vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) responses. May reveal asymptomatic vestibular problems in people with hearing loss. Principal investigator: Development of a test battery for auditory alerts. Used a multi-task environment to assess the effectiveness of different types of auditory alerts (icons, tones, and speech). Final step involved using alerts in USAARL s UH-60 simulator.
