3 Caring For Your Newly Purchased Bull Whatever system your bull has been evaluated in, young bulls do require an adjustment period prior to being used for breeding. This is referred by some as a hardening period. Others refer to it as a let down period. Young bulls, especially those of breeding age, do require attention for continued growth and proper development. Regardless if they are home raised or newly purchased, proper feeding, care and management now will give your bull the opportunity to continue growing and allow him to develop into a sound and profitable herd sire. Several management practices should be observed when newly purchased bulls are brought home. These practices can help ensure that each new bull has a long and productive future with good productive performance. Have an area with fresh water and good quality hay to keep the bull(s) in upon arrival, so they will have time to settle down and become familiar with the surroundings. After allowing to drink water and eat hay, you may feed additional energy at approximately 1 percent of body weight. If you are planning to turn the bull(s) out with the cow herd upon arrival, bring the herd to a holding area and allow the bull(s) to return to the pasture with the herd. Avoid turning your newly purchased bull(s) in with an older bull. We must reduce the chance of injury. Avoid excessive loss of body condition before or during the breeding season. You may want to rest him for 1 to 2 weeks depending on the breeding activity of your herd. If necessary, feed him additional energy if excessive loss in body flesh condition is noticeable. Hay and/or pasture alone will not provide sufficient nutrients to meet the requirements of young, growing, active bull(s). If there is one bull in the pasture, as he breeds the cows, record the breeding date. Non-return to heat is a good indication your bull is settling the cows. Treat for internal parasites at the end of the breeding season. Provide effective external parasite control as needed. Remember, bulls are guaranteed by consignors to be breeders only if they are managed correctly after the sale. Young bulls should be limited to a minimum number of cows to service. The number is decided by his age. The following guidelines can be used: Bull s Age Number of Females 12 to 15 months 10 to to 18 months 12 to to 24 months 18 to months and older 25 to 35 Place young bulls in well fenced lots before and after breeding season to keep bulls away from cows in heat. There should be shade and plenty of clean water in each lot. Provide free-choice minerals and routinely treat for parasites. Consider limiting the number of females you want to settle during the breeding season to 20 the first year. 2

Expected Progeny Differences () are the most reliable evaluation of genetic difference between animals. are the best estimate of an animals own performance relative to contemporaries, performance of relatives and any progeny performance available within the herd as well as across herds within the breed. ACTUAL BIRTH WEIGHTS (BW) - On all bulls when reported. BW EPD predicts calf size and calving ease. WEANING WEIGHTS (WW) - to 205 days of age. WW EPD predicts pre-weaning growth potential. YEARLING WEIGHTS (YW) - to 365 days of age. YW EPD predicts post weaning weight and overall growth potential. SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE (SC) - to 365 days of age. Predicts testicular size and has a positive relationship to fertility. MILK- Milk EPD is an indication of the number of pounds of weaning weight expected to be gained of lost due to the milking ability of a bulls daughters. TOTAL MATERNAL (TM) - The total weaning weight expected from a bull due to the genetics transmitted for weaning growth plus milk. RIBEYE AREA (REA) - to 365 days of age. REA EPD is a prediction of total muscle and is based on live animal evaluation utilizing real-time ultrasound technology. % INTRAMUSCULAR FAT (%IMF) - to 365 days of age. This is a prediction of the percentage of intramuscular fat and is based on live animal evaluation utilizing real-time ultrasound technology. %IMF is an indicator trait of marbling in market animals. FAT THICKNESS (FT) - A prediction of fat thickness at the 12th- 13th rib and is based on live animal evaluation utilizing realtime ultrasound technology. Fat thickness is a major factor in calculating yield grade in market animals. 1 5 DOLLAR INDEXES: $EN ($ ENERGY) - Expressed in dollars per cow per year, as an expected dollar savings difference in future daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). $W ($ WEANED CALF) - Provides the expected dollar-perhead difference in future progeny pre-weaning performance in a multi-trait fashion, within a typical U.S. beef cowherd. As with any $Value, $W only has meaning when used in comparing the relative merit or ranking of two individuals. $F ($ FEEDLOT VALUE) - An index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. $F incorporates weaning weight (WW) and yearling weight (YW) EPD along with trait interrelationships. $G ($ GRID VALUE) - An index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. The $G combines quality grade and yield grade attributes, and is calculated for animals with carcass. $B ($ BEEF VALUE) - Beef Value ($B) facilitates what almost every beef breeder is already seeking - simultaneous multitrait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit, based on dollars and cents. $B represents the expected average dollarper-head difference in the progeny post-weaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
